To oldish users on gfy - coldwar question - time for a history lesson on gfy.
To old users of gfy- hello. I was thinking about the coldwar today, unfortunitley i never knew of it, because i was 2 years old when the berlin wall collapsed and thus wasnt old enough to know anything about it.
but the real question and analysis I want to know from the "average" american living at the time is: when there was a nucleor crisis, you know the cuban missile crisis and how president Regan(i think) was arguing with his russian counter part and the world was on a brink of nucleor war. I want to know what your feelings were; were you scared? what type of mood were u in, were you thinking this will never happen. did you have access to this information. because I asked my parents and my mum had no idea really what was going on because of the lack of media at the time and how her parents kept her away from the tv and radio. So she didnt really know what was going on, even though she knew there was a crisis. my dad was also like this. but u being americans and actully being on the side of one of the fighters, how did you feel at this crucial time in what could have potentially been the near end of the world.

Uh. Reagan was President in the '80s. You're thinking of Kennedy.
How someone could possibly mistake Kennedy for Reagan is beyond me.

Reagan wasn't even a governor yet. My dads house has a "bomb shelter" in the basement. The guy before him built it. Pretty funny really considering it wouldn't protect from much.

When I was in grade school (before Kennedy was shot) we used to have nuke drills.
They would sound an alarm and we would all get under our desks and see if we could kiss our ass good-bye. I think it was meant to give us flexibility as Kennedy also has a physical education program going on at the same time. By the time my kids got into elementary schools these nuke drills became earthquake drills, which made a little more sense. If you had ever seen one of the films showing an A-bomb test you would certainly understand the futility of hiding under a wood desk . . . unless it was just meant as kindling. |

Take a look at the pics in this PDF, and imagine watching the series on film, right before being told to hide under your desk
http://www.radiochemistry.org/histor...nts_cdrom3.pdf Even an 8 year old could figure out this wasn't going to help. We all thought it was one of the dumbest things they ever had us do in school. |

![]() I was just a little kid, but I believe Kennedy's assasination was even more shocking to the nation than the Cuban Missile Crisis (which I really wasn't old enough to comprehend at the time). In the days after 9/11 I remember people being in the same type of daze and questioning whether or not it was a precursor to WWIII. ADG Webmaster |

People think WW3 is going to break out after any altercation around the world, big or small. Its really quite ridiculous. I don't think people realize how huge WW2 really was and how it impacted EVERY household in the world. Over 60 million people died. That would be every person in France or England, or twice the population of Canada.

I'm only 38, and I remember practicing bomb drills in elementary school: Get under your desk. Tuck your head down low, and kiss your ass goodbye. I also remember the Emergency Broadcast system. It was supposed to give you fair warning that an attack was coming and to evacuate. It broadcast over the T.V. and from every fire house in the city. The first Sat. of every month, they would test the sirens. I grew up worrying about Nuclear War as a child, because I lived in an industrial city, that produced tanks. Now I live in Vegas and I'm surrounded by Gov't owned property, protected by armed MPs, with the authority to shoot trespassers. One of the most important Tacticle Air Force Intelligence bases in the world. The biggest supply of cash money on the planet. The largest Nuclear waste facility in the world. Area 51. Minutes from the nuclear testing facilities, and a stockpile of aging chemical weapons. N.O.R.A.D. close by in Colorado. Siting on 9 fault lines connected to the San Andreas. And the known stomping ground of some of the 9/11 hijackers. I got my escape route planned. Always have. |

What this doesn't spook you? I'm an airforce brat, son of a disaster perparedness expert from the cold war era. Pops used to bring home geiger counters and show us why we should never put pocketwatches with glow in the dark dots and hands into our pockets. Even Coleman lantern mantles, the fabric that you ignite to make the light, are radio active. We were constantly surrounded with the fear of nuclear disaster either from an attack or from an accident. I remember when we were stationed at a huge B-52 base in North Dakota. One of the B-52's blew up on the airfield blowing out windows all over the base. I didn't think about it until later... what if it was pre-loaded with a nuke? We're talking about a time when the DOE thought it was ok to test radioactive wheaties on people to determine the effects of radiation sickness. I'm fucking glad it's over! But we are constantly building and testing more nukes and more and more nations are jumping on the bandwagon. What i think is ironic is that we have the balls to tell people that they can't develop nukes when we have this amazing shitload of them stashed all over the world. |

I agree, It's hypocratic, but, fuck N. Korea, Iran, China, and anybody else who wants to develope nukes. It's every man for himself now, and I don't rust those bastards with anything.
They are still watching I Love Lucy reruns like it's new. It's hard enough keeping our shit staight , those mutherfuckers will sell out to the first terrorist with money and then we are all fucked. The world hates us, and countries like that think if we go, then they can be a world power. Let me tell you all something, If we go the whole world will be a fuckin Gieco commercial in 10 years. |

I spent several semesters at school in the US at different times and americans seemed much more concerned about "communism", but in an almost abstract sense, without really knowing what it was, why it was bad, what if any actual danger it represented. Back home, no-one really cared much about communism, communists even had quite a strong grip on several trades unions for a while, but to the extent anyone thought about it at all, the possibility of a catastrophic war seemed more real. It is likely hard to appreciate now, but even if like me you were born after WW2, my generation grew up missing relatives who had been killed within the previous 10-15 years and people still talked about the war. Rationing continued for the early years of my life. Near where both sets of my grandparents lived were bombed out buildings, often just empty sites, but sometimes the rubble lay untouched well into the 1950's. So the possibility of another war didn't seem at all far-fetched. And of course we had scandals such as the uncovering of spies like Philby, Burgess and Maclean to keep the topic alive... If you want to see something which had quite an impact when it was released, look for a docudrama made for the BBC in 1965, called "The War Game". Although it was banned from TV for 20 years, copies circulated freely for viewing privately and in movie theaters. If you cannot find it anywhere else, it is on YouTube in 5 parts. |

I remember the drop to the floor drills in elementary school.I also remember vividly my fathers reaction to the television during the cuban missile crisis. The tension was very high at the time,I do believe he thought we were going to have a war with Russia...move ahead 10 years(early 70's).
I spent time in battalion operations as a *B* team member in Pershing Nuclear Missles.I was one of the two member team that had to insert the keys in a life nuke.We were stationed all over europe with most of our targets in Russia. If the civilian population only knew at the time how easy it would've been for just two of us to actually launch a nuclear missile. |

Every other day I read about some European country having problems with the Muslim population. Laws, fights, riots, etc. We don't have that here. Some people are skeptical and keep their eyes open, sure, but I haven't seen any politician standing in front of a crowd making legislation forcing Muslims to do this or do that. In fact, we just had a Muslim elected into Congress.
