The verdict of guilty and the application of the death penalty is correct

Personally, I am against the death penalty in general. However, if he remained alive in a jail he would just be the focus of hostage exchange attempts, etc for years to come.

Am I the only one who thinks he should NOT be sentenced to death?

A dead martyr is much more potent than a jailed criminal.

His death is likely to result in a much higher state of alert with increased bombings in Iraq with the loss of many more troops.

Although not supported by all, Saddam has a very big following and this puppet government would have found him guilty and sentenced him to death even if Mother Tereasa and the pope had acted as charactor witnesses.

A bad call IMO.

Sarah made a very intelligent point about him being the focus of attempted hostage exchanges, etc.

Even though we'd never give him up, it wouldn't stop people from trying.

They'd be kidnapping journalists left and right (even more so than now), in attempts to gain bartering chips to recover Saddam.

Sarah - I, too, am not in favor of the death penalty simply because the justice system is not without imperfections. I'd rather 1000 people who deserve death would get life in prison, rather than see 1 innocent man sentenced to death.

Last week or so, a particularly gruesome rape conviction from 1981 was overturned thanks to DNA evidence that is available thanks to (new-to-1981) technology.

MMmm... sounds like there is plenty gunfire in the region of the court, tho that appears to be more celebratory than much else, - but clashes have started being reported in areas.

Next are the appeals... and these may be heard in a relatively short time (5 -20 days) and if upheld, the death sentence has to be carried out in 30 days. Hell knows what other action will happen in that time - prob a tally of another 500 or so death.

The comments are already starting on the "management" of this trial by the US - eg the judgements are 300 pages long. No Iraqi judges have ever written judgements remotely of this length.

Verdict comes on November 5th. Gee, what timing right before the elections in two days.

MSNBC reported that they went through today's proceedings unusually fast. That nobody was allowed to speak and that the judge was very "mechanical" in moving right along.

Obviously, he was ordered to do this so that all the big US Sunday morning news shows would have time to get their stories ready.

Talk about a November surprise. If the media shows images of mass celebrations in Iraq, it'll make people feel good about the war.... and vote Republican.

However it could backfire if there is violence.

You remember the pandering to media in the Somalia adventure with a landing timed to match US media and the showing of some unwitting soldier land with a flag on the beach in Somalia - the lighting of course, perfect :1lorglaugh

JUst been monitoring a number of media stations and, kinda surprising so far, that every one, without exception, has delivered what they consider were the views of the people and stated one hell of a lot of US and UK criticism at the invasion and the ongoing failure of operations since that time. It appears that Saddam is not their major priority, - more a concern over the fuckups of their country.

There are also growing issues which appear to have come out of the trial of Saddam, in that there are crimes being committed by US contractors and questions being asked as to why these people are not on trial with Saddam.

Seriously doubt there is going to be any reduction in the violence in that region - but a danger of an escalation - or possible civil war.

Sure.. construction workers Na.. they appear to know pretty well what "US contractors" are - hired killers at arms length from the govt. Nothing new there.

Well, he wanted to die by firing squad as he claimed he was a military man. So, in a way the death by hanging instead if a sort of added insult to him.

It was actually Iraq's own law that provided such punishment..

"US President Bush declined to give a direct reply to whether Saddam will be executed. He said, "I've got my own personal views of how he ought to be treated, but I'm not an Iraqi citizen. It's going to be up to the Iraqis to make those decisions."

Blair said that it should be the Iraqis that would determine the penalties of Saddam."

Let me remind you that this is a court of law. Decisions are made in a court of law NOT to help the future, decisions are made based on crimes.

Violence is likely to be relatively low since Iraq is in under an "indefinite Curfew"... by indefinite they probably mean until Nov 8

Please, don't let the government wash your brain... The one that deserves hanging in Bush, but we, as a nation, are too scared to do anything about it.

Why would a reminder about the mess in Iraq be helpful to the administration?

Not everything in this world is a Republican conspiracy.
