Musicians - Quick Question :::

Hey guys - I bought a Roland Dr-880 Drum Machine and I can't figure out how I should hook this up to my computer for recording. Which output should I use? Here's a pic of the back of the unit. Any of you guys have this machine? This thing freaks me out 'cause it sounds soooo good

well to do it the right way you should get a sound card with a midi in and out. there are several out there for about 120 bucks.

also, depends what kind of recording you want to do with it.

It's a drum machine, it doesn't NEED to send MIDI out. Do this:

Get a cord with 1/4" males on both sides (would fit into L/MONO slot, same one as you'd use for electric guitar to amp), get a 1/4" -> 1/8" adapter (im not sure if it's 1/8", but it should be same size as the one on mp3 player headphones). Plug 1/8" into AUDIO IN slot or MICROPHONE slot in your soundcard. AUDIO IN will sound much better than MICROPHONE slot.

As Airek suggested, you may want a new sound card to make full use of the beast.

Lemme know if you need more help.

Btw, have you plugged any other instruments into your computer before? Like an electric guitar?

No, I've never done any recording like that before. I just picked up a PodXT for my guitar and a Base Pod for my bass. These plug right into the computer via USB for recording (although I haven't yet connected them to the computer). The drum machine is new as well and although I have read the manual, it doesn't explain how to hook it up to the computer for recording (or if it does explain this...I'm not understanding it).

Thanks for the advice

This may be a fairly ghetto way of doing, but try plugging the L/MONO slot in drum machine into PodXT (or base pod)
It may as well work, and you may end up with extra distortion effects on the drums to play around with hehe

If you're spending the money on gear, I'd recommend to get a new sound card, it'll run you about $100 and you'll immediately hear the difference. I'd post a link to a forum where you can read about them, but thats forbidden.. Send me a quick mail to jeka@ jeka.org and I'll give you 2 threads with soundcard reviews.

Just noticed the USB slot, didn't see that before - you can just plug it directly into the computer like PodXT.

I wondered about that. The manual says regarding the USB connector: "When the Dr-880 is connected to your computer via the USB connector, you can load SMF data and use it as rhythm patterns. The USB connector can also be used as a MIDI interfacing. I have no idea what that means

Hey Jonesy - I'm playing around with Acid Pro 6. The latest version of Acid has multi-tracking capabilities. I haven't yet tried recording with it yet but I think it should be fine. I'm very familiar with Sony Vegas and Acid is very similar so it's a very easy learning curve for me

That just means that you can make rhythmic beats on the drum machine, but use the sounds from the computer. There are many software synths that make drum sounds, so you can use their sounds instead.

I get a kick out of responses Dean gets to the questions he asks about porn shooting over on the music boards...

Once you figure it out, compose a song for Donny Jesus and Christ-y Moron.
