Damn, that's alot of NAS you got there

Terastation are good but the drives are not really hot-swappable. I'm told you got to go thru 30+ screws just to remove a drive!

besides the fact: how often do you change the drives?

if you want the best, then EMC is the way to go...

most important... always think ahead... think of your future growth and I recommend you get a higher model than you need now...

Make sure you get a NAS that can match your speed need. I got 20 BUF drives and they cant push more then 11 - 14 Megs even though they got a GIGE port.

build your own NAS server? 750gb drives are cheap,l you can build a 1.5TB scalable to 9TB Usable NAS for 3k to start, and then just add drives and expand the array as it grows.. Built a 11tb nas for 9k for a medical engineering company few months ago. its a solid solution.

Supermicro makes a 15bay SATA 3u chassis, get a external drive bay for a mirrored OS and then 15x 750 for the storage partition..

contact me on icq and i'll show you the parts to get to build it.

Yes, this is the route we have taken now. Using 750 GB Disk, 3 Ware cards and 16 Bay Super Micro cases. The end cost will be less then 1$/GB, it can be bought down to $ 60 - 70 cents / gb, but we chose to go with http://www.datacore.com/products/prod_SANmelody.asp software to manage the NAS so our end cost is like 1.05$/GB

6 of 7 contain all our video content in dv avi and mpeg files. number 7 is picture content

they're all set up as raid 5 - i started using them after some harddrives blew up

and i like the fact that they're not that expensive - i pay about 600 euro for the 1 TB models

edit: another advantage i forgot: i open the box, plug in power and network and 2 minutes later i start copying files

i agree with building your own.

just put together a basic pc, couple of gig-e network cards.

stick a few hot swap 5 1/4 drive bays in it.

buy a bunch of these and fill them with 500 - 750gb drives.
