Supermicro makes a 15bay SATA 3u chassis, get a external drive bay for a mirrored OS and then 15x 750 for the storage partition..

Yes, this is the route we have taken now. Using 750 GB Disk, 3 Ware cards and 16 Bay Super Micro cases. The end cost will be less then 1$/GB, it can be bought down to $ 60 - 70 cents / gb, but we chose to go with
http://www.datacore.com/products/prod_SANmelody.asp software to manage the NAS so our end cost is like 1.05$/GB
