If you don't stop you will have problems *much* worse than having a poor vocabulary.
Yesterday I took my nephew and his friend out for a meal at a local family restaurant. At the booth next to us one of the members of the group was saying F-this anf F! that. I made eye contact with him, letting him know that I did not appreciate that language around the kids. He got the point loud and clear and respectfully complied with my request. The situation was handled so smoothly and quietly that most patrons didn't even realize what happened. The scene could have been *much* worse. That's a promise and a warning. Watch your mouth. |

Well, I have to agree on this one. Some people swear like there are no other words in the vocabulary. Thats fine in private, but in public it's not fine. Usually a look is all it takes unless they're unaware of whats spewing out, lol.

I just request that people don't swear around my boy. It's amazing how being a mature adult can get things done. But hey, if you think it's cool to be the pretend tough guy where nothing happens in a story on an internet message board, then more power to ya. |

Yeah, trying to beat someone down because they choose to not stop saying bad words is the wrong thing imho. Teaching the kids that you state your case when something is just plain wrong is one thing. Making it way worse is another ,lol.

personally i don't mind people swearing around my kids (if i had any).. why? because they pick it up and by the time they are 4 or 5 they grow out of that "OMG I CAN SAY FUCK, FUCK FUCK FUCK!!" stage... you don't believe me? i have a 7 year old nephew who was around swearing all the time, and he grew out of it, doesn't swear anymore, knows what it is, knows its not good, and is out of the stage where he wants to say it...

I agree in that situation....
In some cases though parents can a little like non-smokers - come and sit on the same bench as you in a park and get pissed off because you have a cigarette (or start swearing). |

ROFL If you were to "eye ball" me I'd keep swearing. it's a free country. Fuck you. If you've got a problem, say something to me like an adult in a polite manner and I'd most likely to bring it down a notch, don't try to intimidate me with your lazy eye it's not scary.

Letting your kids/nephews watch you randomly beat complete strangers is going to be much worse than letting them hear someone swearing. Try it a few times and let us know how that works out for you. Plus the assault charge and trip to the police station will be a real nice touch.

Whether I'm out somewhere with any of my young neices or nephews or when I take my parents out to dinner OR even if there are other people in the place that obviously don't want to hear that kind of talk, I have no problem whatsoever about interrupting a table full of shit-talking foul-mouthed retards and setting them straight. I've done it on several occasions.
One day I'm sure someone will react badly to me and get mouthy, maybe even wait for me outside or decide to try their luck and take a swing right then and there, who knows? But so far it hasn't happened. In a bar it's usually different, everyone is swearing. But in a nice family restaurant there's no call for it at all. It's a respect thing, and you either get it or you choose to be a lowlife brainless fool. Cheers. :D

So teaching your kids that if someone doesn't do as you want you should kick thier ass is better than having them hear swear words? That's a great lesson.
"look kids if you ask someone to stop doing something and they don't do as you want, it's okay to kick thier ass, just don't say ass because that's bad. When the police come to arrest you tell them you had to kick some rear end." |

I used to curse a lot, and when I say a lot I mean a curse on every beginning and ending of every sentence. I tried getting rid of the bad habit by replacing the cuss words with numbers or other words.
Now, you would often here me say "Just what the 'four' is wrong with you?!" |

There are other ways of dealing with that kind of rabble if they don't choose to do as you ask and act like humans. The manager of the restaurant can have them removed if it comes down to that. If the manager is unwilling to do anything then the place isn't worth your patronage in the future.
So no need for a public brawl. Unless of course the person or persons wants to wait for you and confront you when you leave the place. In that case it's actually a good lesson to show kids that there are times when it's okay and necessary to not only defend yourself but to stand up for what is right. Or is it better to show your kids that the best way to handle unpleasant things in life is to sit there like a scared weasel letting the assholes of the world walk all over you and those you care about?

my son soon to be 9 went through the cusing stage. I found that if you give them there own words that they can use insted of the cusing they don't do it. He is a smart cookie and when i told him that it was an adult word he said it was not fair so i said ok you can use Fudge insted of the F word. that was the last i heard of it

Anyway, most of the time i'm with friends. But i've been to bars on my own a few times. Why do you ask? Are you so insecure that you can't imagine enjoying some things by yourself? |

I like your style. I agree 1000%. I can remember when I was growing up my father kindly asking others in restaurants to not use bad language in front of the kids. One more than one occasion others almost had a problem

I have to agree. If you are in a family restaurant, that is uncalled for. I dont even like to listen to that shit when I am relaxing and eating, never the less children in tow. You have much more patience than me. I would have outright said something and it does work....sometimes with minor problems....but it does work. There is a time to have fun and be wild and there is a time to to turn all that off.
On the other hand, if you were in a bar, it's a different story. Kids do not belong in sports bars or a bar. Here in Phoenix, we have these fucking parents that bring their kids into a bar and they should be expecting fowl language, smoke and who knows what else. Somehow these parents think it is all about their kids, well it isn't. It's the parents responsibility to make good choices on where they are going with the kids and a fucking bar isn't one of them. Restaurants are a good choice, as long as the parents can keep the kids in line...which is a failing thing out here.

Well, go ahead and flame away ... this is what I think ....
If you were in a restaurant sitting right next to me, and gave me a dirty look, the eye, or whatever ... i probably just would have gone on with me conversation. If you cant be an adult and politely ASK that we respect your kids being in earshot in a family restaurant, then I dont feel the need to restrain my speech. If you had turned around, smiled and said "hey, i got a couple of little ones here ...." I prolly would have blushed, apologized and cleaned it up ...at least till you were gone lol. Scowling at me, making stupid annoyed sounds, sighing, rolling your eyes, giving me dirty looks etc etc is only guaranteed to bring out the attitude in me ... Now, im glad you prefaced this as saying you were in a family restaurant. There are WAY too many parents out there that think its cool to bring their kids to sports pubs, downtown in the evenings, and non-family restaurants and think they have the right to dictate behavior cause their kids are there, even tho most of the time they SHOULDNT be. My last comment .. and I'm sure there are plenty of parents here that are gonna jump my shit for this statement ... but hey ... this is GFY right? If you have small children ... and for me, small is under 10 or 11 .... and you cant control them in public ... you need to pick up your shit, and take them home. Better yet, if your kids are little monsters in public (oh, and you know people like this ... we all do) and you think the right desicion is to "ignore" their bad behavior .... do us all a favor, and leave their asses home. There is NOTHING more annoying than having a nice dinner, at a nice restaurant, and having to sit next to the couple with their 4 brats that will not shut up, sit down and behave themselves ... they are bouncing walls, screaming, running around the restaurant (or whereever) hitting people with shit, and being all-around disruptive totally distroying your nice relaxing dinner. anyways, i can go on and on for hours on this one, and im sure ron will be in to tell me how wrong I am on all of this and how I shouldnt blame parents for all the bullshit their little darlings do, but man, im a SO SICK of feeling like a 2nd class citizen because I dont feel the need to procreate lol - parents should take responsibility for their kids, their upbringing and their actions. In return, I will keep my language clean when asked. deal? twinkley |

Why would I go through the trouble of asking every jerkoff to behave himself? Yesterday I looked the guy straight in the eye and he clearly understood my point. There, all was settled. If he didn't, then I would have asked him to stop. But if after that he'd disrespect me and my kids any further, he would end up wearing a neck brace and an arm sling for the next 12 to 20 months. |

I've gone to bars alone. I've gone to movies alone. I've eaten dinner out alone before. Sometimes you need that time to yourself to think and just be you. You dont want to talk, you dont want to listen or act like you're listening or smile when it's not funny; you just want to be. Sometimes you dont want to sit around the house so you hit a bar and have a few drinks. Nothing wrong with that. It's those who are afraid to be alone that you have to worry about.
