Ive seen George Lynch 3 times now (once with Dokken) with the last being last year. He played a small club here with Yngwie headlining. Good show.

That said my favs include Gilmour, Satriani, and Neal Schon from Journey. I love that "singing" style solo stuff. And if you've only heard Schons music with Journey then you're really missing out. He's got quite a few solo albums out that are great! My final fav is SRV. If it could ever be said that someone was "one with the music" or that the guitar was an extention of themselves, it would be him.

Sam Totman and Vadim Pruzhanov from Dragonforce.

You only need to watch this video to see why. Seriously, watch the whole thing. The main solo is about 2/3 of the way through. Everything up until that point is just a teaser. These guys are ridiculously corny. They make the darkness look like the most serious band on the planet. But it's well worth the watch even if you're not into that style of music.

Loads of great players listed - definitely worth checking out is Jimi Bell, he came in 2nd to Zakk for the Ozzy auditions.. great player who has been around a long time and never really got the recognition he deserves.

But the one player that takes it to another level in my opinion is George Lynch. The guy doesn't know shit about music theory but can play like nobody else.

Very fluid off the cuff style that anyone can tell right away if you know guitar. The guy just rocks it out.

Your thoughts?

gotta say buckethead is at the top of the game for sure

Well, this is ALL a matter of opinion, because art is subjective!

So here's mine: not only is Hendrix a cliche answer, he's way overrated. His playing isn't as original as people might think.

Most people here are only talking "rock guitar history: the marketed version", but Hendrix had many contemporaries who played just as well as he did. Some were HIS inspiration, they just happened to be soul musicians.

Curtis Mayfield - one of Hendrix's many influences.
Michael Toles - Famous for recording with Isaac Hayes back in the 70's... Shaft, Walk on By, all that stuff. They still worked together as little as than 10 years ago. They did a show at the Montreal Jazz Festival: AWESOME guitar solos.
Ernie Isley - youtube.com/watch?v=r1UnmOIqOtI

This thread's called "best guitar players", but so far I only see "best marketed guitar players". Out of those guys, though, I gotta say, John Frusciante from RHCP plays some killer guitar, and I'm surprised no one's named him yet. Dude needs credit.

All of my favorites have been named but on a more underground note I like those two:

John Fahey

Bert Jansch

More mellow then the rock Kings of the past couple of decades but still great guitar players.

Slash wouldn't punch me... I'm pretty sure of that... since he's actually a very calm guy

Hendrix was great at what he did. Back then... but he wasn't the only pioneer of his time... pre-Hendrix, Clapton and Page were inventing modern day electric guitar as we know it.

Stop with the Hendrix nutswinging and get with reality... Hendrix was great. But FAR from the best.

dude im chill , you just make alot of stupid statements so i threw a stupid one back at you.

ive worked for slash and hung around him enough to know that he would dismiss you as an idiot for that statement and your thoughts on hendrix.

as would anyone else.

i never said hendrix was the best, get your facts and reading comprehension skills straight.

there isnt a best guitar player either....but some are above others and hendrix would be in the top 5.

A whole bunch of greats but these are my favs.

Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Zakk Wylde
Malmsteen

I also liked Jeff Healy when I was youngermany americans don't know him but he is the blind guitarist that cut a few albums a while back. You guys should listen to his rendition of the beatles classic "while my guitar gently weeps".

Greatest live album of all time by the master himself.

Anyone that picked up a guitar after Hendrix came out merely stands in the man's shadow.

- theres some amazing guitar playing on this album - the rhythm section of miles and cox grooves like a motherfucker.

and alot of the shit is improve - they would have set grooves, riffs or songs then just go off - the discerning ear picks up on this.

zeppelin did this type of shit in their live shows - real fucking musicianship
