Best guitar players?

I've played for over 15 years and I have alot of favorite players such as...

Eric Johnson
Gary Moore
Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Paul Gilbert
Steve Morse
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Eddie Van Halen
Randy Rhodes
Zakk Wylde
Richie Sambora
Slash

etc, etc, etc...

But the one player that takes it to another level in my opinion is George Lynch. The guy doesn't know shit about music theory but can play like nobody else.

Very fluid off the cuff style that anyone can tell right away if you know guitar. The guy just rocks it out.

Your thoughts?

aico 10-23-2006 09:03 PM

I like Randy Rhodes & Stevie Ray Vaughn myself.

This Kid is pretty good...

Nuno is great too but IMO not as good as the others on my list. He didn't really do anything new... just was very good

donross 10-23-2006 09:20 PM

joey pepe smith and mike hanopol :thumbsup

shekinah 10-23-2006 09:20 PM

It's hard for me to decide.. Can I choose all of them? I don't wanna be a bias for this hehe.

AVM 10-23-2006 09:20 PM

George Harrison

Speaking of guitar greats/legends; Just seen Eric Clapton tonight at Miami Airlines...
very solid performance, he's got an amazing bass player. And needless to say about his guitar skills.

Agreed. But back when he was sober he definitely was a guitar player not to be fucked with.

Aneros Josh 10-23-2006 09:26 PM

I don't like James Hetfield's or Kirk Hammett's indivdual style persay but when they are both playing harmonizing parts, I think it's pretty tough to beat

If you like harmonized playing you should check out Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillet in Racer X.... crazy stuff.

CaptainHowdy 10-23-2006 09:32 PM

Pete Townshend...

FUCKING PLEASE

GEORGE LYNCH?

takes it to another level

:1orglaugh

and RITCHIE SAMBORA?

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

***********

these guys are the most influential and most copied players in rock, wether for their style, sound or songs.

iomi
van halen
page
beck
clapton
hendrix
dimebag
rhodes
hettfeild

the rest are IMITATORS NOT INOVATORS.

well ok maybe vai and slash is really good too.

Paul Markham 10-23-2006 09:51 PM

If you had seen Clapton with the Cream playing last year you would be revising your list.

But then any list like this one that does not put Hendrix at number one is pretty silly. There was never and has never been anyone to replace or imitate him.

Page and Clapton tie for second place. Go listen to some of what they did and in Claptons case still do.

Lynch for his playing style..... tell me you can't here him instantaly. His vibrato, note selection, etc....

Sambora... he knows how to play for the song but can make it his own.

If Eric Clapton says "I'll play on your cd" then he must be doing something right.

I'm not saying Richie is the best, but he knows how to play and make it work

:2 cents:

Re

Come on guys...Jimmy Hendricks, Eric Clapton, Santana...

BitAudioVideo 10-23-2006 10:48 PM

angus gets no love?

BitAudioVideo 10-23-2006 11:28 PM

David Gilmour could atleast earn a mention

MMR Blaze 10-24-2006 12:17 AM

Come on, seriously....Slash and Sambora? You mention those two in the same sentence as SRV? Not even close.

What about real players like John Petrucci of Dream Theater or Allan Holdsworth?

ratzingerjoe 10-24-2006 12:20 AM

dimebag darrell is the best for me...

Yeah he's one of my favorites too

hezochiah 10-24-2006 01:59 AM

I've been playing for about 8 years now and there are so many great players that influenced my style and just that I enjoy listening to. Some of my favorites are... (in no particular order)

Jimi Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Eric Clapton
Carlos Santana
Jimmy Page
Angus Young
Duane Allman
Van Halen
Tony Iommi
Pete Townshend
Slash
Hetfield and Hammett

Some players I think are pretty under rated...

Neal Schon (I mean he played with Santana when he was 16 years old)
John Fogerty
Joe Walsh
Ritchie Blackmore
Billy Gibbons

**** Hey Ice, just curious if you ever got one of those Les Pauls you were checking out. I had to sell my '79 LP Standard today so I'm pretty bummed right now...

chuvii 10-24-2006 02:45 AM

John Mclaughlin just the best

VicD 10-24-2006 02:56 AM

Keith Richards...

ServerGenius 10-24-2006 03:42 AM

John Petruci
Steve Vai
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Joe Satriani
Paul Gilbert
Eddie Van Halen
Robert Johnson
Paco de Lucia
Jimi Hendrix
Carlos Santana
Yngwie Malmsteen

are a few that come to my mind :winkwink:

Jimmy Page
Jerry Garcia

tornell 10-24-2006 03:57 AM

Joe Satriani

Violetta 10-24-2006 03:59 AM

I've played for 15 years as well... but most inspired from Jimmy Page and Slash

escorpio 10-24-2006 04:09 AM

Slash is a fan of George Lynch. His longtime guitar tech, Adam Day, worked for George before Slash hired him.

rodney25 10-24-2006 08:25 AM

This man played a different level. :thumbsup

Vendzilla 10-24-2006 08:28 AM

Billy Gibbons is still my favorite, making a 3 guy band sound like so much more!!

Juilan 10-24-2006 08:32 AM

Add

Edge (U2)
Peter Buck (REM)
Ottmar Liebert (Flamenco style)

Crasy Bitch 10-24-2006 08:35 AM

Clapton:thumbsup

WebairGerard 10-24-2006 08:35 AM

this list could go on and on, so many great players. :) Especially if you open it up to players other than rock/blues

Lynch has own "sound" for sure.

stickyfingerz 10-24-2006 08:37 AM

Brent Mason & Dan Huff.

Minte 10-24-2006 08:46 AM

Most of the obvious guys have already been mentioned..

But if you want to listen to some real innovators..checkout Craig Chaquico and Tommy Emmanuel.

Kerry King
Scott Ian
Roland Grapow
Jeff Waters
Dave Mustaine (not the best, but I love his style and compositions)

yes, they are all metal guitar players...
not metal:
Paco de Lucia
John Mc Laughlin
Ritchie Blackmore
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Eddie Van Halen

ImLost 10-24-2006 10:06 AM

joe satriani and steve vai

dude im quoting you here

"takes it to another level"

style? - what hes doing is copying the van halen style.

he isnt taking shit anywhere and what hes doing has already been done.

once again look at my list and LISTEN to the LEVEL they have taken it to.

the level being one that was uncharted and never done before.

- and clapton will play on anyones fucking album.

(im not saying lynch isnt a good player, he is but the dudes i listed really took it to another level):thumbsup

Cliche answer. Hendrix did some good shit. But no. I'm sorry.... I'm SICK of seeing Hendrix as number one on all these guitar polls.

Slash is my fave.

Hendrix can suck cock as far as Slash playing goes. Why? Because Slash is MY favorite. Meaning... how can someone say Hendrix is the BEST, when MY favorite is not Hendrix. That means Hendrix ISN'T the best ... otherwise everyone in the world would agree.

I've played guitar for 13 years and I know my playing. I just think the 'best' is down to each person's taste and reasons.

Oh well.
