I KNOW it's a long ways away in January, but I imagine, like most coup de etats, outisde the capital is pretty much business as usual ?

Well, the Baht should fall = you can get more for less!!! That is a good thing.

This coup has been a long time coming. BUT the Thai people, bless their hearts, are not the best for planning things out so lord knows how this will end or when it will.

The regular news sources love the drama and tanks in the streets. The financial news sources think that this will be peaceful and pretty much business as usual, so even though I am flying to Bangkok on Friday I have no reason to change my plans -- yet. I guess most of the tourists are still hanging out, drinking, eating and fucking

The police are clearing the streets of ppl and closing all shops down. Schools, banks and the thai stock market wont be open tomorrow and when they will open again isnt clear.

Their are 4 tanks and a bunch of soliders just 5 min away from us.

now that the dust has settled with the coup, things here in thailand are business as usual.. the transition has gone as well as can be expected and a new pm was named... for the expats who live here, the only minor inconvenience was the fact that the satellite tv was interrupted for about 12 hours...

that's the silliest assumption i've ever heard.. i live in the capital, in the CBD, and i havent noticed 1 single difference, havent even seen a tank or a military person... the only think you may see is a few less tourists because they are stupid enough to think the coup would affect things...

I am going to Bangkok in November, my wifes family lives there and they say there is basically no change. The coup was widely supported by the King, the people, etc. Thaksins governmetn was corrupt and deserved to be ousted.
