Dell just called me to tell me their computers suck.
Quite seriously.
We ordered a low end server from them the other day for some little stuff we needed to do. We picked out one of their low end SC line servers for about a grand. So today one of their *cough* "senior server engineers" *cough* calls me to ask what we're going to use it for and then tells me that they "don't really support the SC line of servers" and that I should instead pay them more for a poweredge. Needless to say, I told them that if they don't support the server then he was right... that I don't want it, so they should cancel the order and that I'd prefer to buy my computers from a company who doesnt try to disuade customers from buying their products. I was literally asking the guy "are you fucking serious? you're trying to call me to tell me that your computers suck?" I've bought and leased probably a cummulative 40 servers from dell in the past 2 years... and thanks to their wasting our time we won't be buying any more. Any other good brands of servers anybody can recommend? |

To be honest, what would put me off of a call like that is the guy trying to upsell me. If he was being honest about their low end servers sucking ass, he probably saved you a few problems down the line. I'd be thankful and buy the low end stuff elsewhere.
When I bought something of higher quality, I'd return to Dell if for no other reason than they were being honest. I'd much rather prefer what they did then having to deal with potential problems down the line. Come to think of it, while they lost you as a customer, it's not because of their product. There image would suffer much more if their product sucked. I give them props for being proactive instead of reactive. |

I strongly recommend building your own. You'll save money and you will get something way more powerful.

FUCK DELL. Thier laptops suck, what makes you think thier servers would be any better?
I was gonna have TigerDirect build me a server... but a friend of mine is in the server building business with his brorther so I told him to run me some quotes for baseline comparisions... turns out for a few hundred bucks more I'll move from a 2U low end dual xeon to this 5U monstor box with twice as much storage, quad xeons, double RAM and a bigger ePenis (since we all know that we need to have the biggest box for when other people come into the colo center...). ![]() |

An SC-420 (or whatever it's relabeled, today) is a $300 machine, with profit. If you just want something to fuck with, it's more than adequate with it's 2d only onboard video, limited RAM capacity, and SATA-150 HD.
However, if you're actually planning on doing anything with it, yeah, for some reason you usually want a machine that costs more than the OS you're going to put on it.
