How much (net) revenue does a franchise generally make a year?

Anyone have any experiences with franchises in north america? After all the fees, how much (approx) net revenue can be made from one? How much are do initial startup costs come to?

i realize there are many types of franchises, and there are several other variables (location being a key one) but i was just hoping to get some examples or hear others experiences

well, I know for a a fact that the average subway franchise makes over 100k/yr profit as well as gas stations.

most franchisees buy themselves a job, nothing more.

I'd agree with 12clicks, I know 2 franchise owners (a Tim Hortons and a Subway) and their not making much more than a full time salary owner would, between 70 - 120k and they work much harder than a job would.

And probably take WAY more shit from corporate than a regular Joe.

There is a restaurant locally that serves this cole slaw. It's a new style cole slaw which has pineapple, mandarin oranges and fucking cayenne pepper. It is, the nastiest shit you have ever had in your mouth. You could suck runny shit out of a sick dog's ass and I think you'd enjoy it more than this cole slaw. The manager gets bitched at about 15 times daily (his words) about how nasty the cole slaw is but he can't just stop serving it...it's a corporate decision. Fuck that shit...

Then, to answer your "question"...I mean, you have to think about what type of franchise, is there a strong market for it in your location, are you in a good location, does the demographic match the product, etc etc etc.

It's like asking how much wood could a woodchuck chuck...

I used to own a couple of Dunkin Donuts franchises, and couldn't wait to sell them and get out (had them for 5 years). To this day, about 14 years later, I still can't stand hearing the phone ring and break out in a sweat/panic when I hear it ringing at home. Almost like soldiers when they return from battle and react to certain things. The stores were open 24/7/365 and there were always problems at all hours with unreliable teenagers working for you... You had to be on call to put out fires...around the clock and every shift every day was the same old shit trying to dig your way out of...

I strongly urge anyone interested to talk to other franchisees from all over the country before doing something that can easily make a grown man weap daily. Although lots are profitable, most end up being places where you have bought yourself a fulltime job you will hate at low pay and non existant profits using all your lifes savings. Then a few years later, as a reward for sticking it out and not hanging yourself in the garage, the franchisor will come along and say you have to invest $100K to change your store's decor...to the new look...or else lose the franchise.

The franchise Little Caesars down my street makes about 150K a year net after taxes and the owner stops in a few hours a week. It just depends.

I guess what you have to find in order to make money with a franchise without working your ass off is a good manager. If you manage to survive a year or two with one, then find someone to manage it all the while acquiring more and having the same person manage it, you can make a lot of money with franchises. You gotta accept that you'll make much less money with only one franchise paying for a good manager, but as you acquire more his salary and increases will shrink compraed to your profits.

i have read alot of reports that you should stay away from Quiznos! there franchises are super strict and end up sueing the person if not enough revenue is made.

def look into and try to find a good manager to control and work at the place for you. Try to find someone that has managed in the same franchise at a different location and do a lot of background checks etc on the person to make sure they know their shit.

owning the typical franchise is nothing more than "wage replacement" and the chance to be your own boss for 10 times more headaches.

Completely untrue. There are franchise owners banking like crazy and don't even work. I know one, not extremely rich or anything, but who does 150K a year atleast and stops in only to pick up deposits and drop off checks.
