We may have lost but we've earned a lot of respect from other countries. Germany gave us a great deal of credit and said that we played harder than they thought we were going to. The US players stepped up their game as the World Cup went on. I think that even though we didn't make the finals we definately are coming up in the future.

I agree. I think the USA did great! I reckon in about another 10 years or so, they will be competing consistenly with the best in the world. Hell, maybe they'll change the South American Cup to the All American Cup and the USA can actually get some decent international games on a fairly regular basis!
EDIT: I can't spell. |

Interesting comments from a former German player (Beckenbauer says Germany were lucky to beat U.S)

those players don't know the fucking difference between american football and what the rest of the world calls football.
and NO, i'm not just talking about the name either. ![]() more the constant fucking pauses... i tuned in for the replay of the germany/usa match last night... usa were stopping the game every few seconds by tripping up the germans. there must've been like 4 or 5 yellow cards pulled during a period of about 10 minutes. i mean... what the fuck?! i wish usa had a good team. at the moment the usa find it difficult to keep hold of the ball, their passing is fairly sloppy, the players have fairly basic gameplay and bring nothing special to the pitch, though little sparks of good play do occur occasionally. if the usa wanted a world class, world cup winning soccer team within the next 10 to 15 years (and i'm not just talking about a team that can reach the quarter finals either, i mean, a real world class team), then i guess the sport would have to become popular in the usa. its already the most popular sport in just about every other country... with the usa lagging behind and sticking to their own sports of baseball, basketball, etc. and as the usa has such a high population, there have to be potential world class players in there somewhere. even though its not possible to force the popularity of any sport upon a country... if south korea can do it... ![]() |

The only reason Germany won the game was because their Goal Keeper Oliver Khan played an amazing game. Germans allowed the Americans way too many shots on goal. It was just a miracle that Khan was able to stop them all. |

It's nice to see everyone with the exception of hahmike give credit to the USA Team.
It's just too funny to see stupid comments like hahmikes. If I told you last month that the US would make the quater finals you would have to me to lay off the CRACK LOL.... I also think that Kahn was the difference in the game, he played brillantly. As for us not complaining like the Italian team, that's because we don't know the rules like you European guys do. If we did we'd bitch too! ;) I also have more respect for the game of Soccer than I did before. The games are very exciting, more so then I thought. However, my favorite sport will always be NFL Football!! |

hehe, yes, credit to the usa, they did better than i had expected.
but stupid comments? nah. of course every team will try their best. usa did better than expected, but so did senegal, south korea, and even england. usa have a long way to go and a lot of prove before they can be considered a good, all round team or before people can honestly say, "they deserve to win the world cup, they're good enough" - a team can try their hardest every time, but if they're not strong in all areas, then they won't win. any weakness can be exploited by the opponent. i'll say similar about england - they need to perfect their skills, keep posession of the ball, and create more chances. all teams participating have done well, a few surprises along the way, but the best all-around team will win it in the end. |

LOL,
oh man, I couldn't resist this one.You think your countries football team is going to earn you the respect of the world? A comment like that just proves how far up your ass your heads are. The world hates, and I stress that word, HATES the USA. I love some americans, but I definitely do not like the country and its hipocritical, arrogant, ignorant philosophies that it is built on.. Sew an american flag on your backpack and tour go and tour around the rest of the world, especially south america and see how much world loves you.. PAH! |

Best to pretend to be Canadian if you travel around the world. I'm serious you are alot safer if they think your Canadian. Never travel with an American flag or your asking for trouble. (unless you stay nice & safe in your resort) |

i would've said pretend to be british (or pretend to be english when you travel to anywhere but scotland), i don't think that would result in too much fuss. i guess the accent might be a bit of a catch.. though its doubtful that someone whose main language may be gujerati would be able to tell much difference. if i was in a situation as such when travelling, i'd probably opt for either welsh or australian. welsh has the advantage that not everyone knows what a welsh accent sounds like. its a very safe option. might be a bit of a bitch if they asked me to speak in gaelic though. i guess canadian is far by the safest for an american... :D |

I hate the usa when it comes to all sports! Your country is so fucking big you got to have an athlete in every single sporting event ever created!!! It gets annoying!
I love brownies and the milkshakes at Prince's though, so go USA!! (except when it comes to sports) |

If the U.S. is really into soccer as much as basketball, football, and baseball, we would definitely dominate the sport.
Again if soccer was as popular as say basketball, they would have the marketing power to produce incredible players. You'll have kids that want to grow up like Donavan instead of M. Jordan.

This is a lot of air space which is going to "waste" because there are too few commercial breaks, which the TV stations don't like. With baseball you can throw ads every 12 minutes and it doesn't disrupt the game. America tried to change the rules of soccer and split the game into 4 periods rather then 2 halves. (for more commercials) Idea didn't fly very well. America has no passion for the game & only cares about the bling bling which is a reason the sport isn't popular. The exact same can be said for Canada. |

I seriously heard they wanted more breaks, so they could throw in more commercials.
Compared with hockey/baseball/NFL/basketball - soccer has the least amount of commercial breaks & I heard they didn't like this. LOL I'll feel silly if this isn't true, but i'm sure it is. |

And for the comment about football (I'm not talking about American football) not being big in the States, that isn't exactly right. I think it's the most played sport for youths, it's very popular in the schools and summer leagues, although I think this just started to take place over the last several years. Give us a few years until those kids are playing and coaching, then you'll see some difference.

God, I couldn't imagine never leaving the States. Yeah it huge and there are loads to visit but it is all culturally the same. For me that is why I love to travel..to experience a bit of other cultures.
The world is not out to get us as soon as we step off an airplane. There are more places that are safe to travel to than aren't. Palestine? No, I think I will skip that at the moment but then I never really felt war zones were great vacation choices. There is all of Europe, the Carabiean, parts of Africa, Australia, and Newzealand available to safely explore. How do you know there is no place you would rather be if you dont know the options? Also, yes the States did try to break football into four quarters when it hosted the World Cup. They also made moves to make the goals bigger so there would be more scoring and therefore more exciting to American audiences. There would have been an international riot if either of them had gone through.

You can travel to europe without having to fear anything. Some Europeans disagree on some of the American politics but I donŽt think youŽll find anyone who would be agressive towards you or your family. Even if it doesnŽt seem so (when you read these webmasterboards ;) Europeans like Americans and the American way of live. We are not crazy over here and youŽll feel a lot saver than in certain parts of NewYork.... You get the message: YouŽre welcome here

I find your remarks to be quite ignorant. Going back to this brief 10 minute period. And then you say they find it difficult to hold the ball? I don't think many teams make it to the quarter finals of the world cup while finding it difficult to hold the ball. That was undoubtedly the worst 10 minutes of their world cup performance, and you use it to benchmark their entire performance! |

JOP,
I've been to Mexico a few times, and have cruised through the Carribean a couple of times. It's not like I've never left the US. Just at this time I'm not going anywhere soon. New York is for me anyway a very safe place, and I've been through the the entire city and state. Choda, Well said, I think they did quite well in the World Cup, and I still say if not for Kahn, and that Defenders hand "which from what I understand was a legal play" it may have been a different out come. Shots on goal US 11 - Germany 6. Try not to pretend they that they didn't score on a free kick!! Chris / tunlaluv ;) |

those ten minutes of the second half of usa/germany were about the only 10 minutes that i watched before i got sick of it and turned the channel over. most people wouldn't sit there and watch it, unless it was their home country playing. for everyone else watching, how long can that performance continue? the channel has to change at some point. maybe the usa were suddenly soccer kings as soon as i flicked the channel over, but i base the views on what i saw. usa still did better than expected, of course, as did a lot of other teams. just that a LOT of teams need to perfect their skills in various areas... and saudi arabia need to work on ALL areas of their game. ;) but if you're intent to flame me for flaming the usa, and a few other teams (including my own home team), then go ahead... ![]() |

It was not a flaming. I just happen to have another opinion. Yes, England had trouble holding the ball.. against Brazil! They did lose, remember? The reason they made it that far was 'cause they could hold the ball.
If you get an oppurtunity to watch that entire game, i think you should. I watched every game of the world cup (yes, i have a lot of spare time Honestly, i had my head in my hands after those 10 minutes where the USA just played appallingly. I was really hoping they were going to keep up the performance they had up until that point. I don't doubt we'll be seeing a few of those American's names popping up here and there in football news within the next few years. They have some great talent, and they play a refreshingly fast paced game. And about Saudi.. The game against Germany was ridiculous. I've never seen a team with such a lack of desire and motivation. It was pathetic. However, their performances against Ireland and Cameroon were much more telling. They had some threatening shots on goal in the games against Ireland and Cameroon. The match with Germany was certainly not reflective of their capabilities. |

The USA played really well and looked like a good International side. They will always pull out the occaisional good result.
But to win the WC or any other compettion staged over a short period and against top opposition they need more. How many of the US team play in Europe? To win the WC players have to be used to playing top level games on a regular basis, against top players. Well organised and well disciplined. This is what the US lacks, that experience against top oppostion on a week to week basis. It is very dificult to win against a side fielding top class players, if you are used to playing against a lower standard on a regular basis. But the US did well and can go home with their heads high, but if some their players come to Europe, then they will be more of a threat. On a final note, my brother live in CA and his kids (10-12) and the kids at the schools are all playing soccer. when this generartion start working and earning/spending the advertising companies will realise that a 15 minute break in the middle of soccer is worth more then the 10 break every five minutes in Baseball and American football (So I exagerated a little |
