Is $850 too expensive to pay for a cat?

my gf nagging me to buy her a purebred cat
(of course she doesnt want anything from the local animal shelter)

do purebreds have more health problems than street cats??

animal shelter cats are fine too, esp with the 10mln a yr or so that get dumped. But if she wants a siamese or so, yeah they do have their troubles.

it's dumb. There are millions of great cats dying in shelters everyday, you could have one for less than $50.00, and she'll fall in love with any kitten u bring home right away. Be a man. Buy her a pound kitten.

Yes, and 20% of the time those cats die within a month from some random disease. Quality or quantity take your pick. I go with quality every time.

if she'd rather pay almost $1k for a cat instead of rescue'ing one for free from an animal shelter, she probably wont even take care of the cat and it will end up in a shelter sooner or later

My first Devon Rex was $500, I worked out a barter for web/marketing work with the breeder and got it down to half price. Her business tripled for the following 4 years after the work was completed. She gave me a second Devon Rex for free.

They are both wonderful, heathy, highly socialized, and worth every penny.

Well, I probably would take it, but I wouldn't keep it.

I was looking at an F1 Asian Lepoard Cat that was like $3500, but the wife said that "one kitty in the house is enough" - beautiful animal, but you need a proper place to keep it (as opposed to letting the little fucker claw my leather couch) - ugh, the ALC - my wife can claw the couch if she likes...

My cat claws my furniture, but honestly in 2 years its not bad enough for anyone to notice the damage. And she doesnt fuck with the leather, more the soft things like blanket /fleece feeling materials.

F1 is exactly what it says : nature

Youre not gonna take an elephant so Id say leave F1 cats where they belong. They WILL attack you on a given day. F3 is legal in GB not here. They look amazing but imho you dont want a kittie that eats raw meat and hunts to be in the same house as your kid is.

you're not buying a shirt, you're taking a living creature into your home. If you don't care about animals enough to buy from the pound instead of from a breeder, you really shouldn't have an animal in your care in the first place.

second, that 20% figure is pure bullshit. I've NEVER had an animal in bad shape from the pound.

exotic animals as pets never, NEVER works out. Look up labret's experiences with his jungle cat. It's just a bad idea.

go to the pound. Take your time and wait until you find a cat that pays attention to you. Walk away and if he sticks his paw out thru the bars to try to pull you back, that's the cat for you. That's the method I always use and man I've had some GREAT cats. Funny, outgoing, tough and smart.

That is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

I can't believe how many people here talk out of their asses.

Animals from the SPCA or other sheltered are taken care of and tested and I believe always spayed or neutered before adoption. I'm pretty sure they always have all of their required shots as well, especially rabies.

Just because you spend over $500 on a pet does not make it any better then a pet you get for free.

I'd bet that the majority of the time animals that are given away for free are taken better care of. One reason is that the person giving them away would rather see it in a good home then have a few dollars in their pocket. All of my cats have been purchased from animal shelters or rescue places for under $75 and were spayed/neutered (if old enough) and current on shots.

As far as dogs, from my own experience and that of my friends the more they paid, the more problems. Especially breeders of dogs such as pitbulls. Usually the people are nothing but white trash trying to make money and care nothing about the animals.

I'm not rich, but I do ok. Exotic birds are known to be expensive..

Dont think I can justify paying that when there are so many good cats available for the price of the adoption fee...

A good way to see if it is too expensive is a method I use on my sons.

Say a cat from the pound would cost $75. Tell her you will pay $75 toward the $850 cat, and she'll have to pay the rest if it means that much to her.

Odds are, the cat will suddenly cost too much money.

How about using that $850 bucks and putting it to good use instead, such as buying a couple of good rifles to snipe cats with? We are running out of time to deal with the feline menace, do what you can to ensure the survival of the human race!

Usually the people are nothing but white trash trying to make money and care
nothing about the animals.

blah, blah blah... my ex g/f wanted a kitten once, went to the shelter and picked out the cutest little one... came home one night it was face down in the litter box not moving, barely alive, very fragile since day 1, vet said some disease the shelter never took the time to see. died in her hands barely purring at about 5am less than 2 weeks later after we took her home
