Is $850 too expensive to pay for a cat?

my gf nagging me to buy her a purebred cat
(of course she doesnt want anything from the local animal shelter)

do purebreds have more health problems than street cats??

DutchTeenCash 08-28-2006 09:35 AM

depends what kinda

animal shelter cats are fine too, esp with the 10mln a yr or so that get dumped. But if she wants a siamese or so, yeah they do have their troubles.

pornguy 08-28-2006 09:37 AM

Dpeends on how much you have. I did not even blink when I got my bird. She was 1100$

detoxed 08-28-2006 09:39 AM

I have a silver bengal. Beautiful cat, even people who hate cats like her, has a great personality and is nothing like a normal cat. Worth every penny.
About $800

http://www.aluren.com is a great site

DutchTeenCash 08-28-2006 09:40 AM

http://themightybengal.com/The_Might...er-Kittens.htm

bengals are pricey, him lynxes go up to 2k or more

adonthenet 08-28-2006 10:17 AM

damn bro.. this is just too much..for a car :)

stonegatherer 08-28-2006 10:35 AM

Couldn't pay me to have a cat, so yes $850 is out of control.

MetaMan 08-28-2006 10:36 AM

your girlfriend is a money hungry hooker, i suggest you find a new girlfriend and get a cat from a shelter. :2 cents:

dig420 08-28-2006 10:42 AM

it's dumb. There are millions of great cats dying in shelters everyday, you could have one for less than $50.00, and she'll fall in love with any kitten u bring home right away. Be a man. Buy her a pound kitten.

Yes, and 20% of the time those cats die within a month from some random disease. Quality or quantity take your pick. I go with quality every time.

Sosa 08-28-2006 11:09 AM

here kitty kitty :) I like cats, but my lab would chase that thing around and want to play. One swing of his paw and it would pry knock the cat out.

WDchris 08-28-2006 11:10 AM

it's a bad idea.

Napolean 08-28-2006 11:55 AM

if she'd rather pay almost $1k for a cat instead of rescue'ing one for free from an animal shelter, she probably wont even take care of the cat and it will end up in a shelter sooner or later :(

UniversalPassLorence 08-28-2006 12:03 PM

Too much, in my view :warning

Cyndalie 08-28-2006 12:07 PM

My first Devon Rex was $500, I worked out a barter for web/marketing work with the breeder and got it down to half price. Her business tripled for the following 4 years after the work was completed. She gave me a second Devon Rex for free.

They are both wonderful, heathy, highly socialized, and worth every penny.

tiger 08-28-2006 12:59 PM

Bengals are about the coolest cat on the planet and worth every penny.

And I'm not even a little bit of a cat person.

selena 08-28-2006 01:01 PM

I wouldn't take a cat if you paid me $850.

Well, I probably would take it, but I wouldn't keep it.

I was looking at an F1 Asian Lepoard Cat that was like $3500, but the wife said that "one kitty in the house is enough" - beautiful animal, but you need a proper place to keep it (as opposed to letting the little fucker claw my leather couch) - ugh, the ALC - my wife can claw the couch if she likes...

My cat claws my furniture, but honestly in 2 years its not bad enough for anyone to notice the damage. And she doesnt fuck with the leather, more the soft things like blanket /fleece feeling materials.

LittleSassy 08-28-2006 01:18 PM

erm...well, no.

:thumbsup :thumbsup

DutchTeenCash 08-28-2006 01:23 PM

F1 is exactly what it says : nature

Youre not gonna take an elephant so Id say leave F1 cats where they belong. They WILL attack you on a given day. F3 is legal in GB not here. They look amazing but imho you dont want a kittie that eats raw meat and hunts to be in the same house as your kid is.

Right on.
Its fuckin insane.!:disgust
The pound has tons of'em.

tranza 08-28-2006 01:31 PM

Off course it is too expensive!!

cyberstar 08-28-2006 01:34 PM

waste of money. Go to a shelter and pick up a cat that really needs a home.. and you should dump you g/f... it sounds like she has expensive taste... she'll cost you too much money

pornpf69 08-28-2006 01:48 PM

that is way too much to spend on an animal....

you're not buying a shirt, you're taking a living creature into your home. If you don't care about animals enough to buy from the pound instead of from a breeder, you really shouldn't have an animal in your care in the first place.

second, that 20% figure is pure bullshit. I've NEVER had an animal in bad shape from the pound.

exotic animals as pets never, NEVER works out. Look up labret's experiences with his jungle cat. It's just a bad idea.

go to the pound. Take your time and wait until you find a cat that pays attention to you. Walk away and if he sticks his paw out thru the bars to try to pull you back, that's the cat for you. That's the method I always use and man I've had some GREAT cats. Funny, outgoing, tough and smart.

That is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard. :helpme

I can't believe how many people here talk out of their asses.

Animals from the SPCA or other sheltered are taken care of and tested and I believe always spayed or neutered before adoption. I'm pretty sure they always have all of their required shots as well, especially rabies.

Just because you spend over $500 on a pet does not make it any better then a pet you get for free.

I'd bet that the majority of the time animals that are given away for free are taken better care of. One reason is that the person giving them away would rather see it in a good home then have a few dollars in their pocket. All of my cats have been purchased from animal shelters or rescue places for under $75 and were spayed/neutered (if old enough) and current on shots.

As far as dogs, from my own experience and that of my friends the more they paid, the more problems. Especially breeders of dogs such as pitbulls. Usually the people are nothing but white trash trying to make money and care nothing about the animals.

I'm not rich, but I do ok. Exotic birds are known to be expensive..

Dont think I can justify paying that when there are so many good cats available for the price of the adoption fee...

free4porn 08-28-2006 02:30 PM

my cat is a tom, and full of life with no problems! (touch wood..)

And was free from my mate :)

Violetta 08-28-2006 02:32 PM

10 bucks is to expensive if you ask me! But I am allergic!

Uh yeah right. Ive had 5 cats from the pound, never had a problem

longboardjim 08-28-2006 02:37 PM

i guess that would depend on what kind of cat. :)

sincerely ~ ..."now accepting reservations on "sphinx" cats $2000.00ea , a $500.00 deposit is required"...

IWantU_Jeff 08-28-2006 04:08 PM

does it come with a blonde for at least an hour?
my lil kitties cost like 30$ & with all the other stuff maybe like 150.

why does it have to be a purebred?

you bought a bird for 1.1k? :o

tical 08-28-2006 04:09 PM

my siberian was about 800

Z 08-28-2006 04:11 PM

My girlfriend wants a Russian hairless cat. $1500 for the damn thing. Then she's trying to talk me into a breeding pair. $3500 for that.

They're cool...but damn man.

MandyBlake 08-28-2006 05:23 PM

why does she want/need a purebred cat?
save a kitty's life!!!

selena 08-28-2006 05:39 PM

A good way to see if it is too expensive is a method I use on my sons.

Say a cat from the pound would cost $75. Tell her you will pay $75 toward the $850 cat, and she'll have to pay the rest if it means that much to her.

Odds are, the cat will suddenly cost too much money.

DWB 08-28-2006 05:41 PM

I had a Bengal. I paid about $800 or so for her. incredble cat.

notabook 08-28-2006 05:42 PM

How about using that $850 bucks and putting it to good use instead, such as buying a couple of good rifles to snipe cats with? We are running out of time to deal with the feline menace, do what you can to ensure the survival of the human race!

woj 08-28-2006 05:44 PM

get a dog instead :thumbsup

Harsh, but yeah. With so many cats in shelters, she should go have a look, and see if any win her over. She might be surprised...

blah, blah blah... my ex g/f wanted a kitten once, went to the shelter and picked out the cutest little one... came home one night it was face down in the litter box not moving, barely alive, very fragile since day 1, vet said some disease the shelter never took the time to see. died in her hands barely purring at about 5am less than 2 weeks later after we took her home

detoxed 08-28-2006 08:44 PM

BTW many people that are allergic to cats, are NOT allergic to my silver bengal. people see the cat and say oh im allergic, then 2 hours later they say hmm this cat is cool

tony286 08-28-2006 08:46 PM

adopt go to petfinder lots of cats need good homes or go to your local pound 100's of cats being put to sleep.
