Airlines to Ban Laptops, Cells, PDAs, Watches, Anything With Batteries

Experts: Air security focuses on past threats
Laptops, cell phones and watches pose potential danger

Thursday, August 10, 2006; Posted: 11:50 a.m. EDT (15:50 GMT)

(AP) -- The next terrorist attack could be carried out by airline passengers who hide bomb ingredients in hair gel or baby milk bottles and assemble their weapon in a locked restroom, security experts warn.

The announcement Thursday of a foiled plot to blow up jetliners flying from London to the U.S. using explosives hidden in hand luggage could be the opening of a new chapter in air travel, they said: hours-long security checks, visual inspections of prescription drugs, bans on everyday items.

Bomb experts and troubleshooters for airline security interviewed by The Associated Press said mobile phones, computers, wrist watches or anything else with a battery should be prohibited from flights.

More: http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/08/10/ter....ap/index.html

So if they ban all that, what will you do on the plane? Most business people NEED thier laptop computers on the flight. The way I read this, it wont even be allowed in your checked luggage. And if it was, will the airlines start taking responsibility for damage thereto? If its not, how does your lappy get back from its destination, or get to it? FedEx it to arrive before you? Oh, you could throw in your cell, wrist watch and your PDA because those'll all be prohibited too. Most flights dont even have an in-flight movie. You could always read a book. Until they ban that because you might be able to hit someone over the head with it.

Dosent there come a point where we should just throw in the towel, ground all of the flights permenantly and admit that there is no way to secure an airliner 100% without making air travel itself pointless?

I swear, security in this country is a joke. Where is that quote when I need it? Those who are willing to trade a little temporary security for liberty deserve neither.

The quote that you are looking for is from Benjamin Franklin:

"People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both"

i have a very easy solution to this..

each airplane seat has its own built in laptop with hot swap hard drives and skype built in.. when you register for the flight you simply port your cell phone number over to skype during the trip , your cell and laptop travel in a special cargo hold , and you have use of both in your seat without having to interact with them..

problem solved..

i can also solve hijacking too. if theres no door and no communication with the pilot you cant hijack a plane. so seal off the cockpit , the entrance is thru th emergency hatch in the floor and theres no communication between the cockpit and cabin.. bing bang problem solved..

Lol, who really uses that stuff on the plane? Long flights provide you with plenty entertainment via the awsome built in tv's, and short flights are short anyway. If you really need to be working on your laptop while you are flying, you are probably behind in your work anyway.

I bring my laptop on, only because I don't want to check it. I don't actually use it.

Not a bad idea. Or have the entrace on the outside of the side of the plane via a secondary door. But how would the pilot get a drink from the flight attendant or some food? Also, what about in a situation where something is wrong with the plan and communication between pilot and crew could be vital. They at least need phones, but the idea of physical barriers is a good one.

Banning that stuff isn't all bad, if they were smarter about it. Obviously people who fly frequently should be allowed to take laptops, watches, PDAs, etc. People who have all the sudden started flying a lot should not be able to until they have flown a certain amount of miles or been flying for a certain period of time.

Of course that makes too much sense to ever be put into effect.

A plane can be hijacked without ever speaking or seeing the cockpit. I mean if a terrorist has all the passengers hostage, the guy isnt gonna land the plane and run out the escape hatch underneath LOL

I don't mind not having my laptop on the plane but I do need to get it to my destination in one piece. Will they allow us to check them is the question. And if they do will laptops start coming up missing just like regular luggage.

The way I see it is we already have to remove our laptops for security scrutiny. They should train the monkeys better to make sure its a real computer and not concealing a bomb.

The issue is the power source... Cutting the end off a usb cable makes it a bomb detenator.

once we ban muslims from planes, we won't have a need to ban anything else.

The funny part about banning batteries is that you could probally generate enough of an electric current with a wire and a magnet to detonate an explosive, and any kid who's been through middle school science would know how to do it ;\

IMHO targeting the ignition mechanism is the worst possible way to go about new security from a practicality vs increased security standpoint

Hell you can pry the cover for the reading lights off in a few seconds with one of the metal butter knives they hand out and connect a wire to that... Before anyone could stop you you connect the wires and it's all over...
