Damn, riding motorcycles must be more dangerous than I thought

I had neglected to get insurance on the new bike, so since I was going on my long distance trip, I figured I would probably have at least one run in with the law, so called GEICO to add the bike to my policy.

Since the bike is paid for, has a good security system, LoJack, etc I decided to just get liability insurance. One year, with 100/300 was a little under $300, no big deal. Then they offered me uninsured motorist coverage (takes care of me if an uninsured driver takes me out). I couldn't believe the difference.

With a car, UIM is a few bucks, with the bike it bumped it up to $700!!

They must figure the odds of me getting hit are pretty good.

I will have to be sure to try and limit my riding to wealthy neighborhoods where I know everyone is insured.

That is most likely the problem, I doubt I would notice much of an increase if I lived in Indiana.

get the uninsured coverage. The guy that hit me didnt have insurance and I was pretty fucked for not having uninsured motorist coverage. Its alot cheaper to just pay for the coverage then to pay for everything if you get hit.

That is a lot of bike. You should buy it, then I will lend you my Heritage while you learn and get some miles under your belt. I will break in the Springer for you.

Seriously, if you are going to Bartels' go when I can meet you down there . . . I have some pull there.

I think it's because they assume if it's someone else's fault, and the driver is uninsured, that they (your insurance company) will be out a bundle.

Anyway, who would be stupid enough to run into a guy like you? They had best maim you if they do hit you, because I am sure they would end up with the worse end of the deal when you learned they were uninsured.

Yeah, I know Forrest and a lot of the guys there. All of my older cousins are in the Rare Breed MC. I have some hours under my belt but not to much. About a days worth of riding on a Fat Boy and another days worth on a Road King but it had Ape Hangers (totally diffrent ride). Both had 88's and that was alright. That's why I think the 95 will be good. But that 113 is tempting.

I think the reason it's more expensive is because if they do have to pay out, the chances of it being a more serious injury are much greater than if you are in a car.

Motorcyles are the safest vehicles on the road, right up until the point of impact.

Someone backing into it while parallel parking an SUV is probably what a veteran rider (and bar patron) like you might experience.

Most motorcycle insurance these days do not cover medical, which is why its only $300 a year.

For sure, they'd have to surgically remove it from my ass. Gas miliage is great though. Top speed is maybe 35 on a steep downhill run.

Uninsured motorist protection will cover medical, and that's what we're talking about.

People thinking they have more coverage than they actually have. Like the bare minimum for medical and the other 'little' things people don't think about until it's too late.
Medical is probably the most important from what I understand and of course, expensive.
A lot of times, people that you may talk to on the phone aren't licensed and are simply after a quota. Then it seems after you are signed up, they find some reason to jack your rates.
As far as the Uninsured Motorists coverage, if it's UMPD(uninsured motorists property damage), that is good from what I understand. If it's a generic uninsured motorists coverage, you would be better off with guest passenger insurance, assuming you will have a passenger.
Regular uninsured motorists coverage should not jack your rates that much either(as per your above quote).

Of course, I am not an agent, but I certainly would encourage you to shop around a little. My agent has me with Progressive, and so far I couldn't be happier. My yearly rate for my car is just a little above what you quoted for your motorcycle, and I have really good coverage.

700 a year? for a car and a bike?

liability for my Hayabusa costs me over 2k a year.

motorcycle insurance isn't required in Washington either. i guess it must be in CA?

I think it more the fact that getting hit on a motorcycle more than likely will end you up in hospital. While getting hit a car is mostly only car damage.
