WWIII started on...

IMHO, the first volley of World War 3 was lobbed on February 26, 1993 - it was a dud. After regrouping and some careful planning it was executed again on September 11 successfully. After that it was game on. Agree or disagree, what are your thoughts?

Disagree. I dont think that the first shot of a war can, or should be fired at yourself.

whatever skirmishes are going on or could go on in the middle east can hardly be called a "world war" - it's only one region. the only other area that is even being discussed is North Korea which lacks resources to fight a long war

Dude c'mon, let's see here...
  1. World Trade Center '93
  2. USS Cole
  3. Marine barracks in North Africa
  4. World Trade Center 2001
  5. Spain train bombing
  6. Russion grade school
  7. Great Brittan subway bombing
  8. India train bombs

Mind you I've left out about a dozen other World targets that have already been hit thus far....

The only reason the world is reluctant to call it a world war is because its unorthadox as hell - it's not a nation-sponsored war per se. It is a war of ideologies and nobody really knows how to deal with or how to address that yet...

the world trade center was picked for a reason, it was a focal point of WORLD TRADE, not just US citizens, but Citizens of the WORLD, they did it twice.

I see your point but it's not like WWI or WWII where there were many tens (hundreds?) of millions of people fighting on both sides. For that matter these events aren't even taking place concurrently, it's more like fighting a small mobile group.

Im not sure WW has ever been given a strict definition.

I guess we wont know the answer until its history and our grandchildren are being told about it in school.

I disagree. The Cold War was the residual vying for position after the end of WWII that lasted a couple of decades.

U.S. Military actions since Vietnam:

Lebanon ('82-'84)
Grenada ('83)
Libya ('86)
Panama ('89)
Kuwait/Iraq ('91-'92)
Somalia ('92-'94)
Haiti ('93-94)
Bosnia ('95)
Afghanistan ('03-present)
Iraq ('03-present)

And we mustn't forget the U.S. support and involvement in other wars such as in Nicarauga, El Salvador, the Afghan-USSR conflict, the Iran-Iraq war, etc, etc, etc.

Thank you for the welcome, I would disagree with you about the Cold War had no fighting in it, as the war with Korea and the Vietnam war were all about stopping the spread of communism. Just because the United States and Russia didn't fight directly with each other doesn't mean it wasn't a world war.

The world's citizens are fighting (albeit not physically) but idealogically right now on one side or the other of the War on Terrorism.

With respect to Muslims, they claim to not support Al Qaeda and its mandate yet they do nothing to stop it. If you don't denounce the terrorism - you quietly condone it. It was chanted recently in the streets of Iran on live television,"Freedom is the Great Satan!"

The same can be said on the side of the Free World. Collectively, the free world is against terrorism - this is no secret. But there are those among us who would pacify the enemy or rationalize "why" they hate us - while they're sawing off their head in an Al Jazeera video.

Some people get it. Some people dont. It will affect us all at some point.

Sure it has:

1. A war in which the major nations of the world are involved

2. A world war is a military conflict affecting the majority of the world's countries. World wars usually span multiple continents.

This is not even close to a world war and will not be.

WWII was fought between dozens and dozens. Battles were fought in the US (Hawaii), the entire Pacific, Japan, China, Russia, the entire Middle East, Africa, and all of Europe. The only place that was somewhat safe was South America.

So far this is just the Middle East.

That was Containment-stopping the spread of communism.

Vietnam and Korea are seperate from the Cold War.

Cold War was the tension and the arms race between the U.S. and Soviets,

but the Vietnam and Korean War was to stop the spread of communism.

Both the Norths invading the southern parts, Vietnam and Korea.

If you are considering the idealogical, extremist muslim attacks on other nations as an act of World War 3... then World War 3 has been going on since before Christopher Columbus was working on a new trade route around that forsaken section of Earth back in the 1400's.

Mind you I've left out about a dozen other World targets that have already been hit thus far....

Yeah I agree that in sense it is wwiii, but not by conventional standards
The US didn't declare war until post 9/11. The pasific theater is only just starting to heat up to a serious issue that may call for a use of force.

In a philosphical sense I agree but I don't think that we are technically in a WWIII state just yet.

The situation with Isreal has been much worse in the past and will never be resolved until someones back is broken.

The world has been in a constant state of war in almost every hemisphere for a long time.

I think WWIII will have to include either the perverbial "button being pressed" OR another set of allied nations all declaring war on common enemy nations.

It's conceivable that the next "axis" will be a combination or Iran, Korea, Syria, some form of unified Faction of terrorists, and possibly China??? who knows I'm just speculating.

If it was not so sad, it would be funny madko.

Tho AsianDivaGirlsWebDude just rounded on the rest:

Nica and El Salvador was nothing to be proud about. Afghan-USSR was the time Osama was a good friend and supported with arms. Iran-Iraq - Saddam, another good friend at that time, - was armed and encouraged to instigate a war with Iran.

Bottom line.. who exactly are the "terrorists" and arms traders - makes ya wonder

Excluding the numbers coming out of Iraq, global terrorist activity peaked during approximately a decade beginning in the late 1970's. That apart, can you really call fewer than 500 deaths a year (in most years) a world war?

Spannow and I did the lunch the other day when this subject came up.

The different here pretty boy is that in order for this to be called a World War, there would have to be fighting in Africa (Egypt), Europe, Russia, Japan, and China.

Now, if North Korea starts bombing people and Japan gets into, then we are talking.
