Get anoterh breed. Its a cruel breed to perpetuate. They look squashed and cute but they can barely breath due to being bred to look as they do. You can hear them wheezing and struggling for breath, such a shame.

I used to have a pug a little while ago. I'm not an expert or anything, but I know a little. He was a great pet. We had to take him for a walk everyday, sometimes twice (we didn't have a yard) Pugs don't have very stronge lungs, so don't run him too hard and be sure when you walk him that it isn't too hot outside. My pug was great with other animals and kids, but I'm not sure how they do as a whole.
I hope I helped a little.... Enjoy you're new puppy!

1. SUPER friendly. In fact, you need to be able to take a lot of pug kisses or don't bother. Their entire job on this earth is to love you and be around you incase you need kisses. So, if you get a pug you have a shadow - a wonderful shadow in my view.

2. Not as much as most dogs but they can have weight problems so make sure they get some. Because of their flat noses they overheat so you have to be careful to keep them cool - especially in the summer heat.

3. Yup, they shed. I notice it more on my clothing when I pick her up than anything else. I had cats for a while so I am used to that and it is no worse than my cats have been.

Infact, I see you are in the UK. If you don't have a breeder selected already I would be happy to give you the email address of the lady I bought my pug from earlier this year. She was excellent in looking after the puppy and caring a lot about the breed.

Here is my Parker in a smiling mood:

I have a couple (one is part chihauhau...sorry for spelling)....

I only feed mine dog food and yes, I take them out on runs, what not. They can get out of shape if you let them, but diet and exercise is everything.

They are very friendly.

Well then why are they any less worthy than any other breed? They are still pretty rare in the UK. Whereas there are a ton of Staffies on every block.

hello! i've had a pug for 6 months now and i'll tell you she sheds, she snorts, she wheezes, and her tongue is always sticking out. she hates exercising but we go for short walks a couple times a day and she likes playing fetch and tug o' war with her plushy toys. she's a LOVER dog though, she loves on any human who is kind enough to pet her, and even though she's a momma's girl she'll take loving from anyone. pugs LOVE to be with their people, and they tend to interact well with other pugs (people often get two at once, especially if they won't be around all the time to pay attention to their puggy, two keep each other company and out of mischief).

the shedding is unexpectedly high for a shorthaired breed, but their coats are thick and they drop fur when they're hot like crazy - which burrows it's way into clothes, apholstry, etc. so keeping your pug groomed is the fastest/easiest way to keep from having a house covered in fur. good luck on your pug purchase! i highly recommend adopting or rescuing a pug over buying from a breeder or pet store.

drop me an email to [email protected] and I will reply with her details. I think she has a litter due - if it hasn't already been born. I bought two puppies at the start of this year - one pug and one king charles - and the pug breeder was excellent. I didn't understand how good she was until I got the other dog. I am glad I bought the other puppy because she is wonderful but part of taking her was to rescue her from that breeder.

Normally, I agree but they are still so rare in the UK it is really hard to find any to rescue or adopt. I tried before I got Parker and was told there would be a waiting list of a few years.

Their rarity and the popularity of "staffies" has nothing to do with my statement. I said it was cruel to perpetuate the breed due to their inherent health problems caused by their structure (which owners think is "cute). I'm sure you love your little one, but my opinion is valid and accepted by breeders and dog owners alike. If you are happy with perpetuating the demand for a breed that is structured to look appealing, yet has severe health issues because of it, then that's your business.

Pugs are great. We have four of them!! We just got 2 black puppies a month ago. They are the cutest thing. I heard that they are the only breed that wasn't bread for a purpose except to love their owner. Now they do shed but they make up for it in so many ways.

I've currently got 3 pugs - 2 fawns and a black.

I cannot say this enough: DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE. DO NOT BUY FROM A BACKYARD BREEDER.

Go to REAL dog shows. Talk to the breeders there. If you don't want to ever show your dog, ask them if they have a pet quality puppy. Most GOOD breeders won't have anything available immediately. They will also require you sign a spay/neuter contract if it's a puppy quality pug.

One of my pugs is a champion's daughter. The other two are from backyard breeders. The difference is amazing.

There are also HUNDREDS of pugs in rescue groups. My two fawns are from rescue and the black from someone whose situation had changed. Tassy's pug is a rescue and she's adorable!!

They are very "needy" dogs. They don't like finding things to do, they want you to do things with them. They think they're 10X bigger than they really are. They will eat, and eat, and eat, and eat. I've not seen mine turn down ANYTHING. The first pug I had as a child didn't like pickles and lettuce and would eat an entire sandwich but leave the pickles and lettuce.

They are, IMO, the best dogs ever, but they DO need attention. If you can't offer that, or if you can't find a good breeder to get one from, wait until you can

Also worth mentioning they are very clever at working out your behaviour patterns. If it is late in the evening and I throw a toy into Parker's cage she will stop whatever she is doing and run to hide under the couch because she knows if a toy goes into the cage she usually follows. She is only five months old.

If I want to block her from going into the kitchen I better make sure there is no way at all she could possibly open that door or she will find away. Last week I came down and she had pushed a box I left out to the closed kitchen door, climbed on it and was pretty close to getting the door open.

Yep, Ferd figured out years ago that if he ACTED like someone was at the door, Meg would run to the door and he could nab any toy she was playing with.

They also think that if they walk outside and not do anything, they deserve a treat. After all, they DID walk outside........

Silly dogs

Pugs are the best kids? dog you can own. They will absolutely love any child forever and always. Be warned: If you ever plan to get a female pug, do not get other female dogs. Pugs can be extremely violent to other females, I've experienced this first hand on several occasions. My old pug Lady:

After a few weeks of constant fighting with my new chihuahua female pups, she eventually tore one of their legs off, costing thousands in vet bills. I had to end up giving the pug away as it just wouldn't leave any female dog alone after that, as soon as a female dog would get around she would get violent towards them and start pissing everywhere.
