Tomorrow my son goes for phase 3 of the interview process with LA City Fire Dept. If he passes this, it is a pretty good bet that he will get hired on.

I don't want to jinx things for him, but I am pretty confident that he is going to do well. I know he sure hopes so.

Tell him no matter what, congrats on shooting at that hard of a target. It's a great career and seriously competitive.

I had some very close friends with some big 'city fire' depts in Arizona...amazing feat to get picked up at any of those with the competition out there.

Firefighters, school teachers, police men, etc etc. Hard, important work, and very little pay. What the hell?

Yeah, the pay isn't great, but when you get on with a department as big as LA City there is a lot of opportunity for overtime. Also with the shifts they run, you get a lot of time off.

However, when it comes to him, he would probably do it for free as it is something he has wanted to do since he was 5.

I remember a few months ago we were driving around and he was complaining about the department he works for, and talked about giving it all up (I know that would never happen). During the course of our conversation a fire engine came racing by with lights and siren going. I looked over at him and his eyes were as bright with excitement as when he was a little kid.

It is a calling, just like with teachers and most cops.

Oh, I understand why people do it, I just think it's a shame they're not paid better for it.

Probably because they are paid out of taxes, and taxpayers are reluctant to vote to increase them.

People are so short sighted. Vote down pay increases for teachers, and then complain at their Sunday afternoon bridge game that their children aren't learning anything in over crowded classrooms with less than enthusiastic teachers.
