Yeah, the pay isn't great, but when you get on with a department as big as LA City there is a lot of opportunity for overtime. Also with the shifts they run, you get a lot of time off.

However, when it comes to him, he would probably do it for free as it is something he has wanted to do since he was 5.

I remember a few months ago we were driving around and he was complaining about the department he works for, and talked about giving it all up (I know that would never happen). During the course of our conversation a fire engine came racing by with lights and siren going. I looked over at him and his eyes were as bright with excitement as when he was a little kid.

It is a calling, just like with teachers and most cops.
