However, when it comes to him, he would probably do it for free as it is something he has wanted to do since he was 5.
I remember a few months ago we were driving around and he was complaining about the department he works for, and talked about giving it all up (I know that would never happen). During the course of our conversation a fire engine came racing by with lights and siren going. I looked over at him and his eyes were as bright with excitement as when he was a little kid.
It is a calling, just like with teachers and most cops.

Oh, I understand why people do it, I just think it's a shame they're not paid better for it.
