TV Commercials - cost to make them?

Anyone have experience on what it costs to make a tv commercial? What are average production costs?

tv commercials are expensive, from conceptualization to execution.

Usually a company would spend 10million (in peso) minimum in a one campaign commercial here in the Philippines. A 30seconder commercial would cost around 160k pesos for the primetime.

It's the advertising agency who'll do all the budgeting and everything.

Can't see it running that much... could even do it myself, and have it edited by my staff.

Thats what rocks about having the experience some of us have, most of the schmo's in todays retail business world don't know shit, or have the resources we do.

A typical beer commercial in Canada has a buget of $500,000 and up.

A popular one with Sydney Crosby, a cameo with Mario Lemieux, and 100,000 hockey sticks cost almost 7 figures.

was watering my grass everyday after work just to get out of the house and after a month of doing it some dude came by and offered me $1500 if they shot their commercial outside on the street there because my lawn was nice and green hehe.. So I said sure.... they're crew went 2 feet onto the neighbors area and they paid him $500 for his trouble.. so with just that, and the fact they rolled up with a new chevy, and 5 dudes, and thats just for filming.... i would imagine it cost a small boatload to get to the end product.... 25k in production alone for the simplest of commercials

And sometimes simpliest commercials would take a week to shoot and it would only run for 30-60 seconds on TV.

There is no real reason why a TV advert should cost more than a few dollars. A lot of commercials are now made on computer without a camera. The reason why a lot cost a lot is if you are going to spend $10,000,000 on TV time to show it you'll spend a $1,000,000 to get it right.

A lot of products are also selling an image, feeling or just blowing a lot of dough to show they are the kick ass cock suckers in their biz

That said the cheapest and most awful ads quite often work the best...

I've shot hundreds of commercials over my career, some regional, some national.

Cost cannot be determined. If you've got the right ressources, you could shoot an AWESOME commercial for 50$ or you could shoot a shitty one for 50 000$.

It all depends on what you have at the moment, what you want to produce and then, who you hire to do it.

If you're going to hire a production company for a national commercial, be prepared for a minimum of 30 000$. If its regional, you could get something pretty good for 5000$. Just make sure you put your foot down at every occasion you can and demand more quality. Squeeze every dollar out. Otherwise they'll take your 5000$, spend about 500$ for the production and pocket the rest.

Truth be told, what costs the most about the commercial is actual air time. Slots don`t come cheap at all.

Maybe commercials here in the Philippines are more expensive cause they have well known artist as endorsers. Filipino are more likely to buy products promoted by well known artist.

For example right now McDonalds endorser is Manny Pacquiao. They have Manny's whole family in the TV commercial.

Why would it cost $30k to make a commercial? I already have HD video camera's... all I need is props, and some good acting/actors; then some video editing, and some CG work and bam...

My fathers furniture store had commercials produced by the television station for free when he ran a $15k campaign.

My bet is that (fairly low budget but still pro) cost no more than $1-2k to produce.

I have heard of other 30 second spots (with no celebs) costing $30-50k.

As long as your final product meets broadcast standards (your editor will have to know them), you can pretty much make your own commercials.

But unfortunately its not as simple as point and shoot. Some broadcasters refuse stuff that is not made in house

Are you looking to shoot a 30 second spot, or are you aiming more for the infomercial / late night marketplace? It is a whole different deal when you get to that level.

There are companies out there producing "date" infomercials with no real name on it, buy the rights, add in your own phone numbers or websites, and run it.

It all depends on what you are attempting to accomplish.

The type of commercial is what matters. If you need to make a set, rent a location, any stunt type stuff, etc, etc. Same as making a movie only for 30 seconds or a minute. Some commercials cost next to nothing, if you have the know how you can make your own on the computer and be done with it.

Ok, regional commercial, small retail business.

Create a great concept, put 4k aside for your commercial and you should come out with something above par with the other commercials being shown.

Send the edit work to me if you want, I used to be a broadcast editor for 2 years before moving on to better things, I could assemble something that looks like a National commercial, no prob
