Cancelling AOL account: worst than cancelling an adult membership!!!

More than 800,000 people canceled their AOL accounts last quarter. So it must be easy to cancel right? Not always.

Two weeks ago, Vincent Ferrari tried to cancel his 5-year-old account?he'd heard from others in the blogosphere that AOL customer service could be awful. So he recorded the conversation with a representative named John. Here is the transcript of the conversation:

Quote:

AOL: Hi, this is John at AOL. How may I help you today?

Ferrari: I want to cancel my account.

AOL: OK. I mean, is there a problem with the software itself?

Ferrari: No. I don't use it. I don't need it. I don't want it.

John disputes Ferrari's claim that he never uses the account.

AOL: Last year, last month it was 545 hours of usage.

Ferrari: I don't know how to make it any clearer. So I'm just gonna say it one last time. Cancel the account.

AOL: Well, explain to me what is wrong.

Ferrari: I'm not explaining anything to you. Cancel the account.

It goes on like this for 5 minutes.

Ferrari: Cancel my account. Cancel the account. Cancel the account.
CNBC later interviewed Ferrari by phone about his experience. ?I've never ever experienced anything like that,? he said.

He recounts how the AOL representative as a last resort even asked if his dad was home.

,,,

To put this claim to the test, CNBC reporter Matt Lefkowitz called again. Here is a rough transcript:

CNBC: I want to cancel my AOL account.

He was promptly disconnected.

He tried again.

CNBC: I need to cancel my AOL account. I never really use it. ... Well, if I can cancel it anytime, why can't I cancel it now? Can I just cancel my account?

It took him 45 minutes to finally get his account canceled.

Vincent Ferrari?s blog is now inundated with others who say they've suffered the same fate, making him the patron saint of customer dissatisfaction.

Back in 00' one of my friends tried canceling AOL. What happened next was fucking amazing... he got AOL free for four years. Everytime he would call up he would say that he doesn't use AOL at all and he wants to cancel it. And everytime they would give him a three to six month free extention lmao. This proceeded for seriously close to four years until they EVENTUALLY canceled his account. AOL is one of the hardest things to quit... it's like trying to quit a fucking gang. Once you sign up, you're in for life.

haha i had to do that a couple years ago..

those fucking guys are relentless.. you try to cancel they beat around the bush for like 15 minutes no joke. then they like try to hustle you into keeping your membership. with lines like "ok your account has been cancelled, were going to credit you with another 40 day trial just because you were such a great customer" then instantly try to end the conversation so that they can get you hooked again with that free trial.

it goes on and on for about 15-20 minutes like this. i finally just told them look i don't want a free trial i don't want your AOL service i would really like to just get my service cut off and my name removed from anything related to the AOL company itself. then even after all that they said they would send me a free 30 day trial in the mail at the end of the call. i just laughed and hung up.

The best way to cancel an AOL account is to call in once (recording the call), tell them you want to cancel and then when they try that shit say "I am instructing you to cancel my account and not charge me anymore. Any future charges are unauthroized. My user ID is XXXX, my credit card number is XXXXXX. Thank you." and hangup. Then file chargebacks as the charges come in afterwards if they do. Fuck that shit, I dont play that game.

AOL spent millions to develope a training program called "member connect".
They make commission for ever "save". Once they "drill" down to the real reason you want to cancel..they have a reason why you should keep it and give you 30 days to think about it hoping you forget and get billed again.

Call again and start over

Oh...and here is the FASTEST way to cancel. Once the info is verified...and that process can be a bit tricky as well because due to "privacy" you have to know the exact info or they will tell you to get it and call back.

Once "verified" say "Cancel the account" and hang up. By law they are supposed to cancel it and a rep will get in trouble if they dont and on recorded and monitored on every call. Then call back to verify its cancelled.

AOL is a piece of shit. When I tried to cancel they were a pain too and they asked me why I was cancelling I told them it was because they kept sending me 5-6 fucking cd's in the mail every month even though I had been a customer of theirs for 7 years.

Holy shit I listened to the audio track that was just ridiculous. http://www.break.com/index/aolhell.html

AOL rep "the reason we send the discs sir is like any good business you surely can appreciate the fact we are marketing to grow our customer base. The more customers we have the more features and better customer service.
Maybe you have a child in school or family memeber that would enjoy the service as you did? Have I mentioned our referall program... blah blah blah"

The best way to cancel AOL is to get suspended, Just go into any adult chat and start talking about your site and you will have it canceled within 24 hours, I tried to call and they gave me the run around as if i was the only person to ever cancel and they didn't know what to do. So I jumped into a chat and now I am banned for life and made a few bucks back too!

I'm amazed how easy mine was then!!! They called me out of the blue saying my credit card was declined on the last attempt (there was lots of money in there, not expired, no troubles). They took the opportunity to see if I'd like to upgrade to broadband (the real reason for the 'trouble' no doubt). So I let them know I've been on time warner road runner for years now, and they own aol, so did they really want me to cancel roadrunner to join aol broadband? I said do you want me to take money out of your left pocket to put it in your right? The woman actually laughed with me about it, and said she'd cancel my aol dialup account.

Just to be clear, cancelling an AOL account is hell, not because of poor-quality customer service but because of fraudulent customer service specifically designed to fuck the customer.

Corporations have no conscience.

I don't know if you guys remember the old method they used many years ago before the class action lawsuit. They'd simply put you on hold for an hour or two. Most of the time people got so annoyed they'd just hang up (it was only $10/month or something at the time).

But that is how AOL works. They are relentless. Tons of stories of continuing to bill people over and over no matter if they cancel or not. The problem with the "save" route they have is that it gives incentive for their CS people to simply lie and say they saved you. They'll mark it as a save, give you 3 months free, then you'll be notified down the line you are being charged again.

One of the funnier things I had happen with them was a credit card declined (got a new one). Well they sent me a thing in the mail and I threw it out. 3 months later I got a collections letter saying I owed them $100 or whatever. They said they'd wipe out that charge if I called up and updated my card info. I laughed and threw it out.

AOL is a bunch of scumbags.

I signed up for a 1 month free account a few years ago when I was at a hotel and the only local access number I could get was an AOL one.

3 days later called to cancel it. Sat on hold for 45min. Some one finally picks up. Tell him I want to cancel, he says you need to call this number, reads off the same 1-800 number that I called then immediately hangs up. I was pretty pissed since I at sat on hold for 45 minutes.

Call back to again a couple days later, sit on hold for about 20 minutes. And they do the same fucking thing to me again!!!

I justed called my credit card company explained it to them and told them to block any and all charges from AOL. They did, and I never heard shit from AOL, got class action lawsuit papers in the mail about a year later

Lol, yeah those stupid fucks at AOL give the same speech to everyone who trys to cancel their account. I've had so many bad experiences with AOL. If people only knew how insecure their billing info is with AOL, and how dishonest their employees are, AOL would lose all their members.
