Best HTML / CSS editor

Hey, what do you guys consider the best html + css editor?

I'm not looking for a bullshit frontpage type of application, but I would like to make my life easier with a better editor than like wordpad, htmlkit, etc.

The css part is the most important. I'd like something smart that stores colors in your project / site. For example, if I create a .style with a background color of #CCCCCC, i'd like it to store that color somewhere on a list, so when i'm deep into my css and i'm looking for a grey color, I can see that i've used #CCCCCC already, and grab it again for consistency.

Anyone have any tips for editors that can do shit like that? Thanks!

Ignore the trash that thinks it's funny

Depends really what suits you best vanillaice - apart from standard text editors (UltraEdit, NoteTab Pro etc) for hand coding, - you may want to check out Dreamweaver. If I get your meaning, think DW may do what you want.

There are also 1000's of plugins for DW and you can write your own if there is something specific you want.

Oh and say like you're typing the code in the editor, and you type "blahblah #" right when you type the # a select box will pop up with an array box of colors.

I actually downloaded the demo last night, and it seems like a great program, but it doesn't do exactly what I was hoping regards to the colors.

I think the application would be perfect if say I started a new project for my site, and this 'project' stored information like colors used in my css file, and classes/ids (although it probably does the class/id thing). When I select a color using the 'inspector', and see the color palette's, it would be cool if one of the palette's were a list of colors used in my project.

If that makes sense. Does that editor have something like that?

I use that, but only for the FTP functionality. Otherwise it's all hand coded. The colour coding is a nice touch, but I never use any of the "tools"... it's just all from memory, which is the best way to get a truly validated site.

You can make custom "snippets" to insert in your project. Like say you use a certain css layout in a lot of your projects you can make a custom snippet and then insert it in your docs. Here's the overview for it. Or you can make a custom template with the css in it and the whole document ready to go.
If you're heavy into coding, like me, and don't like the whole what you see is what you get environment (like frontpage/dreamweaver) you'll love this thing. I paid the $40 for it and to tell the truth I would have paid much more.

Nice, I actually just found what i'm looking for as well. It's a pain, but I can edit the color.ini file and add a palette, so whenever i'm working on a site and find a color I like, I can just add it to the palette.

Maybe i'll give this program a second look. Thanks!

Yah, that's another way. I would have mentioned it but a lot of people don't know that much about the way programs work lol. Kudos to you.

You can do snippets and such with html-kit too, plus if you've never checked out the hundreds of plug-ins, it could be worth a look.
Sounds like you got it worked out, I'm just sayin'.

Macromedia HomeSite is the best, code snippets, regular expressions (believe me, you'll need this), the best search & replace (across projects, folders, etc.), everything I've ever needed and I've been building web pages for 12 years.

(Oh god, has it been that long???)

You guys are seriously missing out, for even modest development work an app like HomeSite is incredibly powerful and can do WAY more than Notepad in much less time .. still use Lynx browser too?

How about your reading skills? I said I use Homesite... later I said that notepad is all you should really need if serious about programming.
