Question for the rice riders

As mentioned earlier, I got a new bike today. I have never owned a bike with a tach, so I have a question.

When you are in your top gear, and doing 100 MPH, how many RPM's are you turning?

I had a MAzda RX-7 (13B), once, and when she was doin' 7,500 in 4th gear, I was doing about 118mph.

You're staying under 7500 rpm though, right?

serious question for harley owners..

how do the pipes pass california emissions/noise?

if i built a truck that was that loud, it'd never be allowed on the market.

whats the difference?

There is no emissions test for bikes, so that part of the question is moot. As far as the noise issue, not all of the pipes out there are legal.

My Heritage I put a poring bar through the muffler that was a smaller diameter than a policeman's night stick, which is the instrument most use to determine if the baffles have been removed. Very few cops have noise meters, and even if you get caught (I have) you just throw the stock mufflers on, get the ticket signed off, pay the $11 and go home and put the exhaust back on.

The 2006 I bought is VERY quiet. Too quiet. After I get the motor broken in (probably next week) I will take it back and get a new exhaust and air filter installed to help it breathe a little bettter.

After market exhaust or altering the baffling. Any serious rider can't stand to much noise hour after hour.

the noise from harleys when i'm on the streets makes me want to hurt people.

its not so much the noise, its the dickheads that rev them up while idling up to a stop.

SOS - in case you had not figured out yet, you are on ignore. Besides, owning a bike for one week hardly qualifies you to get into discussions about motorcycles.

If they are reving their bikes up at a stop they probably need a tuneup and reving it is the only thing keeping it running.

My Suzuki SV650s is somewhere between 7krpm and 8krpm at 100mph.

Redline is at 11kprm. Much smaller engine than yours and a Vtwin though, so probably not comparable to real sports bikes.

Tops out at about 133mph.

Dog, I'm very familiar with this subject. I am a heavy rider in all weather on the east coast. I'm 50 yrs old and have owned at least one bike since high school.

What don't you understand?

Some after market systems are louder than stock?

Altering or removing the stock baffle increases noise?

Some of us don't trailer our bikes to events or putt in traffic all day. Or live in helmet law states. When riding hour after hour who wants to listen to loud deafening exhaust.

Then again I never owned a scooter with a CD player .....

That being said .... just ride safe ok?

My 86 has 177K+ miles on it. I have ridden from LA to Daytona and back, LA to Sturgis and back, LA to Bahia de Los Angeles and back, LA to the Oregon border and back all numerous times.

I only wear a helmet in helmet law states and successfully beat a ticket for not wearing a helmet in CA when the law first came out.

I have been riding Harleys since 1971, so I think it is safe to say I have significantly more miles with no helmet than with, and I only have 50 miles on a bike with a CD player.

I love the sound of my roaring pipes, whether on my 42 flathead, 49 stroker panhead, 68 shovel, or 86 Evo.

My helmet does not cover my ears, and I can ride all day, every day, and have done so many times.

My 2006 was at 4k at 100 MPH. I believe the bike would blow up if I took it to 11,000 RPM. Not sure it would even be possible without some major mods . . . like a new computer chip for starters . . even then, not sure it would go to 11k

My Interceptor is turning about 6600rpm at 100mph in 6th gear, which is just below the VTEC engagement at 7000rpm when its switches from running on 2 valves per cylinder to running on 4 valves per cylinder, and then it pulls hard all the way to its 12,500rpm redline.

The Honda VTX1300 which is a v-twin cruiser like your bike is running 3000rpm in 5th gear at 70mph. It also has a single-pin crankshaft like your bike and actually feels pretty smooth at that speed.

As for the engine & tranny being one piece, thats very unusual for a Harley.. are you sure you just dont have a solid primary cover connecting your seperate engine and tranny? Thats not so uncommon.

dont even try it, the long-stroke Harley evo engine is not designed to rev like a short-stroke sportbike

Sportsters were always one unit . . . . I don't know when they started it with the big twins, possibly this year. It surprised me too. Not sure how much I like the idea, but they say it is supposed to be better.

It only has a 5 speed, but they say I can add a 6th gear for a couple grand. I am debating whether to paint the bike or not. If I do, I may go ahead and change it to a 6 speed since I will have to pull it to paint . . . unless I leave the frame black, and just paint everything else.

It matches the Charger so well, I am really up in the air about it.

These are not Evo motors any more. Dual cam, fuel injected . . . but yeah, I highly doubt I would mod it to do 11k

I dunno man. I put some V&H pipes on my bike a few years ago and its so loud I'm not even sure its legal. But when I'm riding, especially on the highway I can barely hear them. I know the cars around me can hear them though, a good twist of the throttle is as good or better than the horn.

Speaking of horns, check out the horns at http://www.hornblasters.com/?pageid=audio

They are supposedly some of the loudest horns in the world and they sound like a train.

Nice bike btw, happy riding

Im alittle under 4k rpm's at 100mph on my Dyna, im just so amazed at how reliable and powerful the new fathead motors are. When i ride my shovel or evo i cant believe the diiference in power. I have 46k miles on my dyna and the thing just keeps going and going and going and never once have i had a problem with it.

And the best youll ever get out of a harley is maybe 6.5k rpm's (maybe more if you mod the flywheels with a windage plate) other than that the bike is not meant to spin at those rpm's. Plus harleys make their power at low rpm's unlike the crothc rockets that make thiers at the high rpm range

Does your Dyna have the 6 speed? . . . and I was just kidding about modding it for higher RPM's. THe closest I ever got to doing anything like that was with my stroker with the lightened and balanced flywheels, but I doubt it ever went over 6k
