Old topic Old Questions Costa Rica

This has been discussed before and I know a few people who live on GFY also live in Costa Rica. Where in Costa Rica would you live if you could. The area needs to NOT be in San Jose, have high Speed Internet available and have at least some English speaking community.

Where should I focus my search?

IMO I would start looking for a place around Escazu or Santa Ana (West San Jose)

-Well developed
-English spoken community
-Private Hospital
-Night Life
-Internet Access
-Variety of shopping centers

Im heading for Manuel Antonio/Quepos as soon as I head my head together.

My problem is that I am on a NZ passport so I have to go over the border once a month - but I am working on that.

Funny, I can actually do fine in Spanish but after extended time in Mexico and some time in Costa Rica I realize a long term stay would require some things I have not found outside of expat communities; just a reality of culture.

The area sure does not want to be San Jose Probono - no person of sane mind would want to live in San Jose

Agree with Chillin the Most on this.

When you first come here or have no clue of the rest of Costa Rica, it's prob wiser to stick around Escazu or Santa Ana. The country is kinda varied and differing temperatures and it's worth getting to know it more before doing anything "permanent". (If you want a temperature for working in - anywhere in Central Valley is OK ie near San Jose, but not in it!!)

If you prefer a beach area - best is the Pacific coastline.

If you want to do some research and look thru the classified ads for clues on homes/rentals and other stuff - it may be worth a subscription to the Tico Times (the local English language newspaper - they deliver worldwide) - http://www.ticotimes.net

Here's the blurb from an ISP for the Escazu/Santa Ana area (AmNet)...

RESIDENTIAL
One Ip Public and Dynamic
2 Way Tariffs
1/2 Mbps /128 Kbps $34.95
1 Mbps / 256 Kbps $49.95
2 Mbps / 256 Kbps $69.95

PYMES
One Ip Public and Dynamic
2 Way Tariffs
1/2 Mbps /128 Kbps $49.95
1 Mbps / 256 Kbps $79.95
2 Mbps / 256 Kbps $99.95

PYMES PLUS
One Ip Public Static
2 Way Tariffs
1/2 Mbps / 1/2 Mbps $99.95
1 Mbps / 1 Mbps $249.95

I think a big part of the appeal of Costa Rica is being able to afford to "habitate" any slice of wilderness ya please --

Did you think all the webmasters lived in San Jose because they liked the scenery?

The infrastructure outside of the central valley still sucks. Yes a few beach towns are starting to get high speed but it can still be hard if you're not something like a hotel.

Just trying to find net coverage for that area, but no luck so far. There is cable there, but hell knows who is providing it or what the quality is like. I'll try and find out tho!!

All that quaint stuff is fine, but after a couple of weeks and the wildlife crawling thru the floorboards and monkeys howling like hell and waking you in the morning - it can get irritating I prefer a "real" house for practical living, security and being able to lock nature out for a while.

Something tho D... property here is on the up and up - same with land. It's hard to end up with a bad deal. Last year capital growth on real estate on the Pacific coast went up between 40- 60% on average, so it's a reasonable investment area.
