Katrina money bill doubtful Cochran: Bush not backing it

Bush wanted the initial Katrina relief package to be half of what it was, thank goodness at that time there was bi-partisan support to really help, but it looks like he's changed his mind about the rebuilding money he promised.

It's going to be real interesting down here as local governments do whatever they have to do to survive. There's barely been a dent put into rebuilding, so much stuff is wrapped up in red tape.

Beach Blvd. is Hwy 90 along that stretch. It runs right along the shoreline. It's the street all the casinos crossed when they washed ashore. They would be routing Hwy traffic away from the gulf further inland, which would relieve extreme congestion, especially during evacuations.

But that is a city wanting a special project (that they feel will advance recovery), most areas are just looking to restore basics.

About time Bush does something right. Under NO circumstances should taxpayer dollars be used to rebuild any private property. Thats what insurance is for. And if you didnt have insurance, well, time to live with the consequnces of that. Its about bloody fucking time someone tells these people to take responsibility for thier actions.

They voted for the corrupt government officals that diverted levy money to other projects. They made the choice to build on ground that everyone with a brain knew was unstable and at risk. We didnt do this? Why should we pay for it? Let THEM pay for thier own stupidity through higher taxes in thier own damn state.

And no, we dont need another fucking freeway. What we need are less SUVs on the road.

Do you realize how small of an area affected by Katrina involved the levee area? There aren't levees throughout 3 states. I'm nowhere near the levee. My area was not designated a flood zone and in entire recorded history had never flooded. Most of the area flooded in Katrina had never seen water.

Tell me, what is insurance for? LOL!!!!

I had homeowner's insurance when Katrina struck. I've had the same policy over a decade through Allstate. Guess what? When the biggest natural disaster in US history hit, the insurance companies bailed. I don't know anyone who has been properly compensated but I do know of a number of lawsuits. I lost everything and the house suffered significant damage and Allstate decided a fair settlement was $157.

Besides, the bill we are discussing is not about private property, there are avenues for homeowners shafted by their insurance companies, albeit slow ones. A lot of city infrastructure was lost. In my area all of the city government is still set up at the fairgrounds. Shipping facilities that serve the entire country were damaged, entire area's economic bases were wiped out.
