How Do You Keep Your Kids Away From Adult Content?

In the office, we often talk about how we keep our kids away from adult content. We tend to talk about filters, supervised surfing of our kids and other ways of keeping them away from adult sites. What do you do in your home to keep your young children and kids away from porn?

Put strict limits on their computer use, and get them their own computer so their not using yours

Family computer's in living room where other's could easily see.

Set up the firewall/filters, and XP to screen out adult themed sites, and such.

Set up XP with different ID's so each kid has to "log in" to the computer. Then, me as "administrator" goes in and check's their history.

I believe that having a family computer in an open area where everyone can see what is going on is a great way to monitor what the kids are looking at. I also think that we should not allow the children to be on computers that we work on.

Also, some ISPs (Internet Service Providers, the companies that let your modem connect to the Internet) provide content filtering as part of their basic service. A lot of it depends on the age of the kids too. I supervise a majority of their surfing. They each have their own login screens and their own bookamrks in them (I do the bookmarking for them). This keeps them on the sites they want to stay on and I don't have to worry so much about them making a typo and ending up somewhere where they don't want to be or I don't want them to be. When they get of chatting age, that will be monitored. They have yahoo email address for their mother, grandmother, etc. but it all goes through me first. I make myself a human filter above and beyond the software filters.

yeah, the best thing is to put your computer in the living room or somewhere in the open so it can be viewed easily

A proper schedule on using the computer and I tell my son that he can't view any adult video material or view some porn in the internet til he reach the legal age.

I don't have kids yet but if your talking about computers and tv...they have blockings tools for programs/websites

This is what I do as well. I also have my kids their own computer in the main line of traffic in my living room and they know if I even think they are someplace they shouldn't be online, they know they lose their computer privileges for awhile.

I also check their history, and everything else at random.

They are also not allowed to use any chat programs for any other reason BUT to talk to their friends, the younger ones that is. I once caught my 8 yr old giving info out and she said they asked so she was answering. So then we had a long talk about perverts online.

My kids know what I do, but they also know that if I catch them on adult sites, they have had it. They are 8, 12 and 17....... so they are old enough to understand the consequences. lol

All my kids have their own pc in their own rooms but they all know everything is logged and i check it daily when theyre in bed that way i can see also if theyre spending time on the pc that should be used for homework etc

I saw a story on TV last night where a family with about 4 kids had a computer room, each with their own PC. The parents said it was somewhat "self regulating" because there was always at least one other person who could see the screen. Hmmm...

I don't have kids, but if I did, I would probably invest in SurfControl or one of the tools that filters and logs Internet, email and chat activity right at the connection point (prior to the router)... kids are getting increasingly sophisticated at being able to delete info from their cache and history, and even if I trusted my own kids, the stories I've heard from our models make it clear that friends come over and introduce stuff (ways of getting around filters, etc) that make it a challenge for all but the most tech-savvy parents to keep up.

I also have to say I was really disappointed with NetNanny. When we updated a couple of our sites, we decided to go through and make sure we were in the databases of all the major child protection filters. All of the others had our sites properly listed on their block list, but NetNanny didn't. I tried to fill out the form to add us, but the form was broken. I emailed support to describe the problem, and got formletters back from somebody in their Bombay email response center that offered no information on how to get our sites added.

Finally, I sent an email to somebody in their public relations department letting them know I would be contacting the 700 club and a couple of other major media outlets, describing how our porn company couldn't get them to update their filters. Miraculously, somebody called me the same day, apologizing for their Bombay response center's answers, and promising that everything would be fixed.

Pretty pathetic when the industry *tries* to be self-policing and those who are supposed to care can't be bothered.

This is the other thing to worry about, you are correct. That's why along with filtering programs, etc, we need to communicate to kids as well.
