Why I hate DMOZ.org

Under the guidelines for linksites:

Submissions are NOT permitted to contain:
Quote:
# Any form of unconventional traffic creation / manipulation.
What kind of idiot makes a rule prohibiting "unconventional" marketing methods?

Right. I am sure you are making better bank than they are, so why not put them out of business?

I am pretty sure that I do indeed make more bank from working online than most of the community of unpaid volunteers who regulate most of DMOZ do from working on DMOZ (excluding, of course, some of those "unpaid volunteers" who are there simply to get their own crappy sites in).

That's not my point though. What I am mainly annoyed at is that DMOZ could have huge potential as something actually relevant, but somehow manages to fill itself with idiots who in turn fill the listings with useless, spammy and dead links, while setting up ridiculous rules which often keep out exactly those legitimate sites which would be useful for the surfers.

Tons of reasons, ranging from editors who list their own sites and like to keep competition out, to the internet nazis who have no social life and take out their frustration by establishing their own little randomly governed dictatorships.
You know, the guys who cry on their personal blogs about some girl who doesn't even know they exist, and whose moods are determined by the amount of comments they get to their posts (0 = suicidal tendencies, <3 = crying, <5 = sulking, >10 = orgasm).

If it is not useful to surfers then surfers must not go there, which means you have no need for it. Right?

I couldn't agree more. I found DMOZ to be quite useless, needless to say i havent been there in years.

Google uses DMOZ for it's directory listings

A DMOZ listing helps google rankings beause of the backlinks

It's more useful for link weight than for traffic, actually.

dmoz needs a lot of work I agree. I have waited forever for sites to be added and have followed all the rules to the "T" and still get nothing from most of their catagories..

I am quite aware of that. Just trying to emphasize my earlier point. Their ball, their rules.

You are the one that said they "will always fail at being useful to the average surfer." Who cares about the surfers, right?

I care about the surfers. Or, at least, I care about the internet being useful. Once, I thought dmoz was a great resource as well as concept. It's annoying to see something like that fail so badly at what it should have done.

I'd be just as annoyed if wikipedia started sucking, or imdb, or google.

I don't see why you are bitching about it, I agree dmoz is not as useful as it once was, but what does pointing some random rule have to do with anything? Your site got denied because of that rule or something?

The rule is just one example of many, a random idiotic rule among countless idiotic rules. I could have pointed out the one saying sites that promote other sites have no unique content, instead, or sites listed that break literally every rule of the category they're in, or categories consisting of 50% dead links.

Ironically, my sites almost always get listed, and pretty quickly at that. My bitching is at the idiocy of dmoz, not at what dmoz does for me.

what are you supposed to do when you have submitted your site and you hear nothing back etc. etc.

It seems like there could be someone that never checks to see ifthere are any new sites that want to be added...but then what can you do about it?
