I'm doing a school science project with my son and we are putting 4 different metals in 4 different liquids and tracking the effects over 5 days. Only one metal and liquid is reacting in a way we didn't expect ..maybe someone can tell me why? (to lazy to do the research)

we put Galvanized Steel in Vinegar .. right from day one it started to produce a gas in the form of bubbles on the metal .. now on day 5 it's not bubbling but the Vinegar is dark red and has slime on top ... the Galvanized Steel does not appear to be rusted but just dull.

we had no changes to the metal in fresh water /salt water or oil ... anyone know what the Chem. reaction is from ..is it the Zinc or what?

Galvanized steel is covered in zinc. Zinc reacts with the vinegar producing hydrogen gas.

That's what i figured .. I recalled something like that in like 5th grade ..

... the first 2 days it produced a good amount of Hydrogen and you could smell it .. then it seemed to stop producing the gas and just got dark red really fast ... pretty cool

I just looked it up and found this fun little trick I'll do with my son

1. Clean a penny: place a penny in vinegar--becomes shiny as oxide on

surface reacts with acid and dissolves.

2. To show that copper is in the solution from #1, put 50 pennies in a cup

of vinegar and let stand all day or overnight. The next day, place iron

nail in solution. Iron metal reacts with copper ions in solution--copper

metal appears on nail.

yep... i remember doing that exact science project somewhere around 4th or 5th grade.
I believe we also used Coca Cola as one of the liquids.

this is what this fucking project looked like when we finished ... keep in mind he in 3rd grade and we took 4 metals and put them in 5 liquids for 5 days and took pics every day and made a journal ... it wasn't easy getting all the pics on the board ..plus i had to crop and title each pic in photoshop. then cut each one out ... it took me 5 hours to put together ..my son stuck it out for 2 and had to go to bed ...

let me ad there will be no grade on this ...it's just a science fair and everyone gets a ribbon for participation ....

little bit rusty ( forgiver the pun) but do have a medical science degree.

from memory Vinegar contains Acetic Acid in low quantities and water.
Galvanised Iron, contains a Zinc coating. Acetic Acid in the form of say 3% Acetic acid acts as a descaling agent on the Zinc coating, and corrodes the Zinc away.

You realize that since 1983 that pennies are 97.5% ZINC.
