Visa debit cards in Canada

Do any of you guys have a Visa debit card in Canada?

Visa says they offer them in Canada, but my bank (Royal Bank) says they don't know anything about them.

I want to get one.

Do any of you guys have one?

I have not heard of any bank offering them here in Canada. No bank website I have ever been to has them listed (yes, I frequent them a lot)
I personally doubt they exist in Canada,

Visa says that all the Canadian banks that issue Visa credit cards also issue Visa debit cards, and Royal Bank is one of them.

I think the banks here don't want to tell anybody about them because they make way more money from credit cards, and if people started using debit cards instead of credit cards then they would be losing all that money.

Hopefully someone here on GFY will have some more info

Just called TD Canada Trust, they claim they don't have them. They have debit cards, they have visa. They don't have them combined. Where are you getting this info from Visa?

We have Visa credit cards in Canada, but for some reason they are being very secretive about Visa debit cards.

Credit card = paying for things with borrowed money

Debit card = money is instantly removed from your checking account when you pay for things

The Canadian section of the Visa website shows debit cards as well.

I'm starting to think that there is a huge conspiracy to keep me from gettin one of these cards damn it.

Like it said in a post above somewhere This is not a credit card the amount does come out of your acct immediately.I had one a few yrs ago trough a US bank, its advantage is you can use it as a credit card! The canadian system is behind in innovation of this kind , its too conservative! If you cant get one here go to Buffalo open an acct with a bank that offers it . The banks here would rather make the 24-28% interest so you are in hock to them for the rest of your life

Its an either/or thing. you either get a debit card or a Visa card.
Drive down to the USA and open an account there. That way you can have both.

How would a "Visa debit card" be any better, then a normal debit card?
I have a Mastercard & debit card through Canada trust and they both work great.
I've never heard of any combined "wonder" credit/debit card.

Shemp - Any Canadian bank will open up a US funds account if you want.
No need physically go to the US to open an US dollar account.

If you want to rent a car with a debit card, its impossible. Same as buying stuff over the net, debit cards arent set up for ecommerce. You need a visa/debit card combo, which you can get in the US.

Why not use both?

1. Debit card for ATM & buying stuff from stores if you like.

2. CC - must have for some things, renting cars or whatnot.

In canada you have to undergo the usual credit qualifications to get a Visa/ Mastercard etc. The USA debit/visa debits your account instantly, so its not a true credit card. You can only spend what you have in the bank. But, it does have the Visa Logo on it, so it is accepted like a Visa card. I believe the credit requirements
are nil or next to nil.

I'd like one of those, especially on my US$ account, but scotiabank only ever offered me visa on credit card

shemp or anyone who knows, what do i need to open a US account, as I can drive to Buffalo in an hour or so. Is it just 2 pieces of id, and its ok if I live in Canada, I don't have a US address.

I want a US account anyway because I would like to put paypal money recieved occassionally.

thanks

I have considered opening a US account before, but the part that would probably be something to look at, is US banks want a SSN #. Canadians don't have SSN #s, we have SIN numbers. You would want to call a bank down there and see if it is possible to open an account without a SSN #. They might not want to, or might not be able to.

Here is the deal with opening a US bank account:

You do need a SSN to open a bank account in the US.

However, you don't have to be an American to get a SSN.

You can get a SSN that has non-work priviliges (ie: for people who don't want to work in the US)

Once you have your SSN, you can go to a bank and open an account.

An easier way to get a US bank account if you are a Canadian is to just do it through one of the major banks here is Canada.

I know that Royal Bank and CIBC both offer to setup American accounts for their current Canadian customers. The US account is associated with your Canadian account and you can easily transfer money between the two.

Just a quick note. We recently had a trip to the US and used a VISA debit card for the hotel 'deposit' and to hire a car. It may be true that not all will do this but certainly we had little trouble. Shame the same isn't true in the UK, you can rarely use it for any e-commerce over here only on US sites.

I'm from Canada, and I'd love a Visa Debit card too..

here's why they're useful, at least for me:

I'm young (legal age, don't worry :P), and I don't have a "real" job other than being a student. Since the bank doesn't consider internet income as stable, they won't give me a high credit limit. Even though I have cash in the bank, I can't make large purchases (scripts, design, content) because of my low credit limit.. a visa debit card taking the money directly from my bank account would be awesome, since I wouldn't have a real limit other than how much cash I had in the bank.

Anyway.. TD Waterhouse is US based, and they offer checking accounts. If you guys are with TD, try getting a Waterhouse account. Ask for a form at your branch.. I'm going to try that. But I *think* you can get a visa debit card with the waterhouse account.

I totally agree with you.

The reason I want a Visa debit card is because I don't want to buy things with a credit card if I have the money to pay for it right now anyways. When I put stuff on credit cards I always spend too much, and I hate getting that "surprise" credit card bill in the mail a month later.

If I have the money I just want to pay for it now and be done with it.

Thats what I do anyway. I can check my CC balance online at anytime, so I charge something and then pay it off from my checking account. But since my credit limit is so low, I usually have to break anything big into 2 or 3 smaller payments, waiting a day or two in between each charge to pay it off first.

Its easy to open a bank account in the US.
You need two pieces of ID, one with a picture.
You will need to fill out a form stating that you are a Canadian.
Believe me, all the US banks in the border towns are very familiar with Canadian customers.

if u open an account in the states u'll end up getting hit with exchange rates. so each transaction will cost u and extra 2-3%. unless u have american money u can put into the american account. then u'll get hit with wire fees.

I have a visa, and I'm in Canada... I charge it up and feel happy with all my new shit, then, when it comes time to pay the bill, I feel depressed and spaced out (a little masturbation cures that, though)

He is absolutely right , its like a "secured card" you can only spend up to what in your acct at the time. I used to have one with Firstar Bank out of chicago. Its just a matter of having proper id to open a bank acct. Some banks are hooked in with Visa some with MC

perhaps a stupid remark... but if visa/debit is hard to get why not getting a mastercard/debit ?

over here in the netherlands debit cards are 'standard' ... if i go to my bank and i ask for a 'credit card' they provide me with a debit card
years ago when i first asked for a credit card at my bank i didn't know shit about it, i just wanted to be able to buy stuff online. so i went to my bank and asked for a credit card... what i got was a mastercard/debit... i like it though... only EUR 10 or so per year for the card and furthermore no cost at all... in fact it's exactly the same as my regular bankcard but able to use online... what else could i want

Yes, I know its possible to open a bank account in the US without a SSN, but they won't give you a Visa/Mastercard check card without a SSN.

Vidsweb, i know exactly whatcha need...

That's atleast how i got the card !

Open a paypal account, and they have a debit mastercard, which they can send you. If you encounter a problem, such as if you have low transactions, hit me up on ICQ and I'll tell you how to get the card anyway - it's possible!

Don't you need a credit card in the first place to put money in a paypal account? ;)

Actually, I will clear up a bit in my last reply, You NEED a credit card to use paypal in Canada. Yes, I had to reject payments from a sponsor, since I was not allowed to accept payments without a credit card on file with Paypal (and the nice $1.95 charge to verifiy the credit card is valid).

There are places in Canada that offer Secured Credit Cards for those are you that are interested. I just got a partially secured one from Capital one Canada. Also hometrust www.hometrust.ca has a 100% secured one. No real banks in Canada have secured credit cards. Yes, our banking system sucks balls!

Have you tried to get a credit card from a bank in Canada working only as a porn webmaster? Fuck, it is hard. I have been rejected by every bank in Canada. I am proud of that. I tried at my main bank. I applied for a $500 credit card, their lowest one, and they are like, sorry, you are rejected. I am like, fuck, I have over $10,000 just sitting in my bank account and you can't fucking approve me for $500 (which is like $300 US). Fuckers don't like people that are self employed. I must kill them all
U motherfucking banks

You guys are missing the point, I don't want a credit card, I want a Visa Check Card and/or a Mastercard Debit Card.

These are cards that are accepted anywhere Visa/Mastercard are accepted, but when you go to pay for something, they immediately take the money out of your bank account instead of extending you credit and sending you a bill at the end of the month.

I know what you want, but it doesn't exist in Canada. Visa may say it does, but it simply doens't. If you can get them to name a specific bank that carries them, I will eat my words, and send ya some high quality traffic!

That's atleast how i got the card !

Open a paypal account, and they have a debit mastercard, which they can send you. If you encounter a problem, such as if you have low transactions, hit me up on ICQ and I'll tell you how to get the card anyway - it's possible!
Um, they sent me one of these. Its only for money currently in your Paypal account, correct? And I can't add money to my Paypal account from a CDN bank, so all I can do is spend it like a CC if someone sent me money, or use it at an ATM machine and take cash out my paypal account..

its not what he needs.. it doesn't take it from his bank account, which is what I want too

Come on people, I have traffic for someone who can actually find a national bank in canada that has it! I will send it right to your sponsor URL too

I'm phoning Visa again when their call center opens up again on Monday and I'm gonna ride their ass on this subject.

Me thinks this conspiracy has something to do with Interac, but I'm not sure.

Hey Zoink, by the way, you might be interested in my current plan to get a Visa Check Card.

Step 1 - Get a checking account with TD

Step 2 - Get a TD Waterhouse US checking account

Step 3 - Get the Visa Check Card that comes with the TD Waterhouse account

Step 4 - Transfer money from TD checking account to Waterhouse account online instantly.

Step 5 - Buy cool shit with Visa Check card and the money in the Waterhouse account.

A couple weeks to get a TD Waterhouse account? Did you apply by mail or in person at a TD branch?

Credit Unions have them in Canada but you need to have good credit to get it cause it uses a personal line of credit. Just in case you go over whats in your account they told me.

Scotia bank never heard of them. They use to offer pre-paid credit cards but got rid of that! Sucks big time

Yes, I know its possible to open a bank account in the US without a SSN, but they won't give you a Visa/Mastercard check card without a SSN.
Hate to disagree, but I HAD ONE

I hate to disagree with you, but I went to 5 banks in New York and they wouldn't give me shit unless I had a SSN.

What bank and in what state did you get your US bank account?
