Howard Stern os Over... Opie & Anthony are taking over <Vid>

Howard Stern will be a relic if he doesn't come back to terrestrial radio. His satellite audience is way less than 4 million people. On free radio he had 20 million. Now, Opie and Anthony will develop 16 million fans while they forget about Howard.

If you never heard of O&A check out Anthony on Howard's show here

The question is, how many of you have heard of Opie & ANthony already?

Never heard of Opie & Anthony

I have long said Howard moving was going to be his death. Why will people pay for radio when they are costumed to get it free? Maybe in several years from now, but it is going to take time to get people to be willing to pay for it. Moreover, this will come out of peoples disposable income - internet fees, higher state and local taxes, gas prices and the multiply high gas has on all goods and serves, paid sites on the net, cable TV, mobile phones and all its extras, and the price of live - there is a limit what consumers are willing to pay extra for and how much for. The economy is very strong, perhaps the strongest ever, but there is a limit on disposable income and I do not think there has ever been a market like there is now where all the different place that are competing for these finite disposable dollars.

Oh horse shit. These paid services will continue to grow for years. What is it $13 per month? They'll just tack that shit onto new car prices, $650 for 5 years of service and nobody will notice the difference.

Give me a break, O&A wont last very long on Terstrial Radio. Remember CBS fired them in the first place and it will happen again. But personally i couldnt care less, why you ask, cause there is no way in the world id ever listen to Terrrestial Radio Again. Get Sirius and see what im talking about, i remember when i was younger everyone was saying "I wont Pay to Watch TV" hahaha right.

Sat radio is the bomb, and id never give it up. Plus Howard's show is soooo much better on Sirius. O&A are great but they just wont cut it on the FCC airwaves who limit what they can do or say.

They fired them not because they weren't good but because they pushed the limits further than Howard... and it kept thier fans on the edge of their seats. "The Man" shut them down, now "The Man" needs teir help so bad they are willing to take on the risk of bringing them back and getting picketed by the Christian right for doing so.

Howard is very nervous about this.

I thought satellite radio was stupid as well. But after listening to a friend's Sirius system I changed my mind. I plan on getting one just for the rock stations alone. (Hair Nation, Octane, etc.).

You don't notice how bad the commercials bother you until you listen to a radio station that has none.

I don't think Howard really cares, he has his 200 million dollar contract to keep him company, or whatever outrageous amount he got paid.

Have you heard Stern's new show? It's nothing short of amazing. While Opie&Anthony get fined for saying 'bitch' on terrestrial radio, Stern is having Jenna Jameson ride the sybian, uncensored.

Here is the problem that I see with the Howard satellite deal.

- Is it super easy to get a radio - get setup and be rolling?
Its about as easy as getting a new cell phone - depending on where you go - who you get stuck with - it could take 30 minutes or it could take 30 hours.

- Is the cost a factor? realistically - No, But, They should make the players and initial setup a free type of promotion - saturate the market and then getting people to put down $15 a month is really a mute issue.

- Is the market mature yet? - No - but thats part of the risk that they took signing him. It takes time to get satellite into every car, home, office. Will it happen - at the current rate its going to take a bit longer.

- Lastly - as a fellow North American living in a foreign country - why oh why do they make it almost impossible to purchase this type of product. I have friends in Canada that say its not even possible to buy one there and get Howard in Toronto or Vancouver - without buying from USA - bringing across. If people can buy from anywhere and use anywhere, anytime, I think they capitalize on additional market-share much easier.

This is just my

The O&A CBS/XM cross deal stinks for XM stock holders. XM is grasping at straws at this point. They are giving up exclusive content in an attempt to get Sirius off its heals. Hell they even share Oprah Winferey.

Exclusivity is where it is at for sat rad. You need to give the people something they cannot get on regular radio.

They sold out and it is going to hurt them in the long run.

Not true. Stern has been available on Canadian Sirius for several months now. There was no real news report about it though.

Like the Tom Cruse "quote" about eating the placenta after the birth of his child these things are taken out of context.

Howard was joking around on his show about how competitive he is. He said he told his shrink that the was upset that not evey one of the 20 million listeners moved over to Sirius.

Howard will continue to grow...O&A will be another failed attempt by CBS to hold on to anything it can.....

Do you think once the religious right starts busting balls.....CBS won't buckle?

They are just trying to save face by hiring the same idiots they fired a few years ago...cause the DLR experiment was a miserable failure..

I will NEVER listen to regular radio again in any of my cars...commercials are just too much to handle anymore....

Wether you love him or hate him ..Howard is here to stay for at least 5 more years...and i will GUARANTEE his audience will continue to grow....as will SIRIUS over XM....

Who here remembers when there was 5 channels on TV? The three major, the local independant, and the whacky religious channel.

Then cable TV comes out...and why pay for TV when you get it free?

Howard's show rules. Sirius rules. I never turn it off. Between Howard, Joan Jett's Underground Garage show on Saturday's, the Jazz station, and the uncensored comedy channel, I can't listen to dumb free radio again.

This has nothing to do with how good Howard Stern's show is.

It is good, better than before. Plus, I really like Sirius overall.

This is all about O&A being a decent replacement on free radio.

That combination will bury Howard.

PREMIUM & PAY can never beat GOOD & FREE when it comes to attracting a mass audience.

Catholics Give O&A Thumbs Up; Stern Speaks

John Mainelli reports in the New York Post that Howard Stern bashed CBS Radio Chairman Joel Hollander this week for firing David Lee Roth too soon. Stern called Hollander ?the laughingstock of the radio industry? as he also addressed the subject of the pair who will be taking over for him on many of his former terrestrial radio affiliates, Opie & Anthony.

On the subject of the infamous St. Patrick?s Cathedral stunt which got O&A banned from terrestrial radio, Stern said, "They desecrated a church...this is blasphemous and unforgivable."

Meanwhile, William Donahue, president of the Catholic League, released a statement saying, "They have learned their lesson [and we hope] Opie & Anthony have a great run on CBS Radio.?

Radio doesn't quite work like that. You take several million customers out of the audience and their ad revenues go down. Every day that the satellite radio programs are available ad spots are worth less and less on free radio. This will cause them to cram more ads and make it even shittier than it is. Free radio as we know it is more likely to be on it's deathbed than Howard Stern.

Sirrius radio rocks. Its so nice not to listen to crap commercials. I think it will become the norm just like cable. How many of you still have regular free tv? I bet most of you have cable or satellite. For what it cost its well worth it

Agreed, I have noticed a difference with stations around my area cramming in a ton of commercials as of late, which never used to be the case. After listening to the stations, I would estimate it is now 70/30 content:ads, whereas before it was 95/5.

I am thinking about switching over to satellite radio as well, I have heard many good things.

Chadglni, what you say makes sense if you are looking from the outside. I know a bit about the biz from the inside and can say you are wrong. Definitely.

Satellite radio is still so small it doesn't register as real competition and won't for many years to come. Radio's audience competition comes from the web, TV & video games.

Here's a summary from one of the most respected media trend analysis companies in the world:

That rate will generate local and national spot revenues of $26 bil. in 2010.
When it comes to ads per hour, the biggest companies don't just randomly cram tons of commercials into it's programming. As a matter of fact, Clear Channel, the biggest broadcaster worldwide, has a company-wide campaign called "Less Is More" in which they play less commercials than ever before. It's positively affecting their bottom line.

With HD radio coming soon satellite radio is on it's deathbed. Mark my words.

We will also hear Howard on terrestrial radio again by the end of next year.

it actually is doing really well. Sirius added 3 million new subscribers just since Jan of this year. and they have gone from having around 600K subscribers to having over 4 million in about a year. and they continue to grow. XM is in trouble. they have lost NASCAR to Sirius. On stern they have people call XM and tell them they are canceling to go to sirius and the XM people are making deals with them to let them keep their subscriptions at $3 a month and crazy shit like that. Also XM has freaked at suddenly losing a lot of subscribers to sirius so they went out and dropped a ton of money on getting people like Oprah who will have little or no impact.

The big thing will be as new cars get built and they get sattelite radio put in the car. People can put the cost of the radio and a lifetime subscription on the price of the car. For a long time XM had deals with many auto makers. They are now losing market to sirius here too.

In the end I think O&A will get some listeners, but I think all it will do is make more people move to sattelite. I read today that there show will be 5 hours long. The first 3 hours will be broadcast on regular "free" radio. Then they will change studios and do two more uncensored hours for the XM subscibers. so if I'm listening to them I wonder what I'm missing and I may buy sattelite. Also, the irony of this is that CBS is suing Stern because they say he talked about sattelite too much. Now they are hiring guys who are on sattelite to do a part time show for them....classic.

I would predict that in 5 years sattelite will be huge. The religous right and the FCC will make "free" radio so bland that anyone who listens to any amount of radio will buy sattelite.
