New MAC user -- need help! - GoFuckYourself.com

I ran out and bought one of the new Intel macs -- LOVING it! However, I'm not really sure what I should be using for HTML editing, etc.

I assume I need to get Photoshop, so that's a no brainer. I am using Transmit for FTP, VLC for video, the built in Terminal for SSH ... but that's all I've figured out.

Any suggestions?

LOL yeah, you aren't kidding -- it's a whole new world!

I used to make fun of Mac users, but now I can see the truth -- it's better to use the software that's being ripped off than the software that is doing the ripping. OS X has blown me away, when compared to Windows. And with Boot Camp, I can run Windows in a dual-boot environment on my Apple computer, so why would I buy anything but a Mac from now on?

Ok, Dreamweaver and Photoshop it is, then. I don't think I can get the "upgrade" price, even though I have the Windows version .. grrr.

What's so good about OS X that just "blows" XP sp2 away? And not in the grandma sense of 'easier to click stuff'. I mean for someone like me who tweaks XP perfectly to my liking and has never had any major problems.

you got either Adobe Golive, Dreamweaver for you nobrainer coding.
then you have JEdit and BBedit, the former is java based cross platform.

I agree BootCamp is very nice.. I have it setup on a mac book pro but to tell you the truth I never load windows on it. Why would you want to when you have OS X. But the thing is a monster when running windows stuff as well.

Just get the macromedia package. It has dreamweaver, fireworks and flash in a bundle. Dreamweaver and fireworks work really well together.

where can i get that bootcamp? im clueless. i have virtual pc in my new g5 (which i haven't used that much co's i need to backu files first) but i never tried it that much. it sucks to see windows running on mac os (heheh joking). anyone could help? anyways, i use dreamweaver for editing html. haven't tried other editing software. i love transit don't use Rbrowser for FTP not good for my experience. did you noticed icq and ym on mac? lol nothing is new just an old version atleast windows has new versions.

congrats on the purchase i need to get rid of my old g5 though its not too easy to sell macs here in my place.

i need to pull some legs

I said it has blown ME away. I find myself working more effeciently, more effectively, and the way the workflow happens is so intuitive, I am more productive.

Your mileage will obviously vary. I'm a Linux/Gnome user by default, so I guess that makes me biased to something that I can relate to more closely than Windows.

I'm still using XP SP2, no question, but for games -- not work. Linux has taken a back seat to OS X, though.

Just bought Photoshop & Dreamweaver -- which is what I am familiar with from Windows. On Linux, I use Gimp, but I think it isn't mature enough to replace PS for me.

Yeah, I have one of the new dual cores .. I bought a Mini (because I have huge monitors, and the iMac would be silly to downgrade to), and a laptop. They scream with speed -- I'm very happy. My Windows/Linux PC was a 4200+ AMD with 2GB of RAM, Dual 7900 cards in SLI (don't quote me on this, I bought it months ago, and barely remember) .. this feels faster.

Dreamweaver is a great program and you can also use Iweb which is part of the Apple suite for simpler editing.

iWeb is weird -- it doesn't seem to save individual projects, but I could be completely wrong. I made a site with it, saved it, and now that site comes up by "default" every time I open it. Is that how it's supposed to work?

I bought iWork, though, and that's AMAZING -- I like it a lot better than MS Word.

They used to have a Cross Platform upgrade price, you might want to check out their site and see.

I'd say, yes. Why buy something that only runs Windows, when you can have cool-looking hardware that runs both?

Personally, I plan to get one of the desktop Intel boxes when they come out later this year.

I installed OS X on my Intel (Dell) laptop, and it runs fine, but I like the looks of the Apple laptops better. From now on, I'll toss Windows on the Apple hardware. Why buy something else?

Dell support has sucked so much lately I can't imagine doing any more business with them anyway.

That's how it feels, to be honest.

I get a lot of flack from Windows users (and I used to be one of the guys GIVING the flack to Mac users), but it's easy to tell that they haven't had one of the new Macs on their desk. Playing with it in the store isn't the same. I thought it sucked in the store -- only bought it because I needed to run a program .. it wasn't until I got home that I realized what I had.

If you are an experienced coder then check out BBEdit, or even switch to your PC mode and get EditPlus. If you want a WYSIWYG type program then go with Dreamweaver. you really got to love macs. very fast and stable. i've used windows before for designing and stuff after a months of using it keeps on failing the first months are fine but then you'll get lots of headaches from viruses and technical problems on pc's. i bought this old mac june last year and its amazing i haven't had any problems when it comes to hardwares especially in softwares

can't wait to use my new g5 with 3.5 ram and heh only 2.7 dual but im ok with that i can't afford the monster quad. i'll check that bootcamp and see

heh thats what im doing when designing a site. i'll check ie in mac (that shitty browser) safari is much better and firefox mac then check it on pc.. not that bad but sometimes it pisses me off. lol

Yeah, I should definitely get FF. I love Safari, but I need FF for testing. Good call on SuitCase, I forgot how much people say it slows down with a lot of fonts.

And yeah, I love Transmit. I'm a convert. Bought it a few days ago.

I'd wait for the Intel Dual Core desktops ... instead of the G5's, so you can use bootcamp. I am 99% sure you need Intel hardware to make it work.

The Mini is like $800 for the version I got. Dual Core Intel, etc, etc. $600 more for 2GB of RAM (although it's only $200 if you do it yourself).

No biggie. My desktop (PC) was more like $12,000 if you include the LCD's and everything.

Just so you are warned... When you load and run Windows XP onto your Mac via Bootcamp, that computer is now just like a PC running Windows XP and you can get all the Viruses, Trojans, Spyware, Etc, so be sure to install all the normal protection.

I used VMware "back in the day," and was never happy with an O/S that ran "in a window" ... since this takes all of about 5 seconds to reboot, it doesn't bother me to hop over to Windows when I want to play games.

Remember, though, I only boot into Windows for games -- I'd never surf the web or anything using it. That's what Linux is for! And now, I guess, OS X.

What you have there is a thinly disguised UNIX workhorse. learn to use the VIM editor and you'll see your productivity increase tenfold...

when I was a student I would buy a macromedia package with dreamweaver and all their other main programs for web design.... it was a quarter of a price.
