Over 1 mill .EU domains - is it overhyped?

Total number of active .eu domain names is now 1,038,680 - http://status.eurid.eu/

Are the majority of people and companies wasting ?10-20 per .eu domain or does the .eu tld have a place on the internet?

Personally I think it will fulfill a latent need for companies that wish to create or take advantaged of a pan european identity and consumers/surfers that seek specific european products/services/information.

Ofcourse I could be wrong, and it will only be the owners of the sex.eu, stocks.eu, news.eu etc. that will benefit from the from the TLD. Instead companies will waste ? trying to brand a new TLD, that will have little value for its users.

Is the .eu TLD overhyped?

Risky investing in my opinion.

Why dump dollars into an unknown, when you can have less risk and better upside with the .com's?

Anybody here that lives in the EU plan on visiting sites with .eu instead of .com?

.com will always be the premium and defacto tld - anything else is a waste of money unless you are creating a brand

Surprisingly, .US domains have sold recently, could be some nice buy and hold .EU investments out there...

Thats crap.

The Japanese use .co.jp
The British use .co.uk
The French use .co.fr

It only stands to reason that Europeans will start branding the .eu domain name for buiness entities within the European Union.

Regards,

Lee

Because it is a risk that if lost, is a tax rightoff. as long as you are not investing the farm, and only grabbing a few that you think you can resell or use, then there is no harm in buying them.

America has its own .us tld too but it dont mean fucking jack shit, the real money is in .com dont be foolish now. Looks like well over 90% of the global top 500 on Alexa are .com
http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sit...obal&lang=none

But hey you want to spend your money on shitty .eu domains go for it Im sure you will see a nice ROI.

So what it's just 10 Euro per domain if you can get some good ones. If you can't gamble with 10 Euro then your business is in trouble ;)

Its not even a risk factor....

Registering .eu domains, primarily for me, is about protecting MY business assets, ive secured a heap of webmaster related domains that i know nobody else is going to be able to use for copetitive practices.

Likewise, i also purchased some domains because i feel they have good resale vaue to them or, they could be used for new projects in the near future.

Domain names are an investment in your long term business strategies, not just for putting sites on or reselling.

By owning the domains that i registered over the last 18 hours im certain that no one can interfere with my business... Easily.

Regards,

Lee

.eu will never be big

why? Because probably over 90% of the domains registered today were registered by domain traders/investors/hijackers that will do nothing with the domain but hoping it will be worth money later, and in the meantime they just forward it to a simple search/landing/sponsor page.
Probably very few will actually build a website on the primary names, so the chance is very unlikely that someone will type in domain.eu just to see if they have what they are looking for, because they know that almost none of the domains are being used. So I think .eu is nothing more than .ws, .us, .name .info, etc.

I have two one word .infos, too lazy to see when I regiostered them but lets say I've paid so far 30 bucks each (one reg fee + renewals), I can easily get 300 bucks each straight away, so how was that a bad investment???

the same applies to the .eu IMO, and congrasts to the peeps that got their domains, I know I got ZERO from the 20 I preregistered ;(

Agreed.

Although risky investments often produce high returns.

I haven't bought any EU domains.

Yeah, you have to love our FUCKING dot US registry.

In 2002, I registered some polticial .us domains with the word "fuck" in them, the next thing I know NeuStar (the registry) locked them up and removed them from the zone. They have a little censorship policy that says you cant use any of the "heavy seven" in the domain name.

NeuStar will follow a policy to preserve and enhance the value of the .US Internet address to all users, including, in particular, state and local governments, libraries and K-12 schools. Given the importance of .US as a national public resource, certain guidelines must apply. Therefore, NeuStar will review, for possible deletion by the Registry, all registered second- level domain names that contain, within the characters of the domain name registration, any of the seven words identified in Federal Communications Commission v. Pacifica Foundation, 438 U.S. 726, 98 S. Ct. 3026, 57 L.Ed.2d 1073 (1978), the hahaha8220;Seven Wordshahaha8221;.
I really should get off my ass and sue them over that. I'm sure that there is a free speech arguement to be made there somewhere, being that .us is being overseen by Neustar on behalf of the USDoC and taxpayer dollars are being expended on the project even if not directly. Keep in mind that this is the same registry that smears its logo feces all over the American flag and proports to be the domain that represents what America is all about.
