I Went To The Doctor and He Said I Have "Mitral Valve Prolapse" of the heart

I am a 25 year old male that plays tons of competitive tennis(tournaments etc) since i was 12 keep in mind. I have been dealing with constant fluttering and skipping of beats for the past 10 months or so. I went and had a stress test/ekg and a heart monitor few weeks back and he was told this just rescent. The weird thing is this is common in women and less common in men. Something like 18% of women and 12% in men. I have not been able to sleep much the past 6 months or so and i just looked up my diagnosis. Anywa iv been worrying about dropping dead of aheart attack for a few months now or having open heart surgery. None of that is needed nor a thought in the doctors minds they assured me. Anyway, i looked it up and if anyone is interested or have had these symptoms, go to the doctor and he or she will probably diagnose it as MVP!

Understanding the Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome:
http://www.nursing.wright.edu/practice/mvp/default.htm

Here is some quotes that made me feel better:

"Many MVPers believe chest pains signal a heart attack. MVPS is not known to cause a heart attack. In general, severe narrowing and blockage of a coronary artery that supplies an area of heart muscle with blood causes a heart attack. This may lead to permanent damage of a portion of the heart muscle. MVPS neither narrows nor blocks coronary arteries, nor causes permanent damage to the heart muscle."

Palpitations, Extra Heart Beats, Forceful Heart Beat, Pounding Heart, Heart Flutter:

"People describe palpitations extra beats as a pounding sensation in their chest. Others say they feel a flipflop or fluttering. Arrhythmias disturbances in the heart rhythm such as atrial extra

beats (PACs), or premature ventricular extra systoles (PVCs) can cause palpitations. While some people feel each beat, others do not notice them. Often, after extra beats, people have a sensation that their heart stopped for a few seconds.

Skipped or extra beats are very common among MVPers and the general public. Sometimes they occur following the use of caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, or certain medications. Other times, emotional stress may cause extra beats. Sometimes they happen for no apparent reason. In any case, these beats are relatively common, and should not be a cause for alarm. An explanation of the heart's electrical system may help to understand extra beats."

"Although the relationship is not clear, many MVPers suffer from anxiety or panic attacks. The symptoms described are more consistent with panic disorder, the anxiety disorder studied most often in MVP patients. People have recurrent, spontaneous anxiety attacks that consist of various combinations of symptoms similar to some MVPS symptoms. These symptoms include: fatigue, fainting, dizziness, chest pain, lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath.

The degree and mechanism of association between MVPS and anxiety disorders remains unclear. While some believe the symptoms cause anxiety attacks, others believe extraneous factors trigger attacks. They may occur anywhere, at anytime, even in the middle of the night. Whenever anxiety attacks do occur, they are frightening."

MVPers report other symptoms. Common ones include:

?chronically cold hands and feet
?gastrointestinal stomach disturbances
?problems with memory or a feeling of fogginess
?inability to concentrate
?mood swings
?problems sleeping
?numbness or tingling of the arms or legs
?arm, back, or shoulder discomfort
?difficulty swallowing
?lump in the throat

Anyway, I know its probably alot to read, so i quoted some stuff since no one wants to read a shitload of things about something they do not have. I just felt releived and i felt its important(at least to me). So thanks for taking the time to look and if you reply, I appreciate that as well.

I'm very glad that it's nothing super serious. Just keep taking care of yourself, eating right, exercising and learning how to play poker!

Damn I've always felt odd things like that in my heart since I was a teenager, and I'm prone to anxiety attacks and some of those other symptoms. If I have the same thing, what's the treatment?

To be honest, the doctor told me he could put me on meds for the rest of my life or just to learn to deal with it. He said it was not that serious. So in the end, I guess dealing with it or getting on beta blockers most likely. Im not about to do that. That will mess up ur whole body(gaining weight, other problems) etc.

I talked to a few people(mostly ladies since the % is higher for them to have MVP) and they told me they started getting it on their 20's and have had it for 30 years and still going). Its so draining on ur (mind and body).

Yea that makes sense. If that's what I have then I've been dealing with it for so long that I'm used to it. Any ideas of how to deal with fatigue? which I find is a real problem for me.

Well, See im very active with cardio due to teaching tennis for a second job, and mine comes from constantly dealing with the symptoms. I would say try and exercise more, unless you do already. If you exercise regularly, then I would say to try and relax asmuch as possible. At least have some sort of exercise though. Im not sure how ur diet is but that could cause fatigue also.

A friend of mine was recently diagnoes with MVPS. Gave him some real scares until he figured out what it was, and his doctor told him pretty much the same thing that yours told you. Sounds extremely uncomfortable and annoying, but at least it's not a serious threat to your health.

When I was 18 and in the army I was told I have MVPS. I'm 41 now. Never took anything for it, and I have lived and partied hard. You'll be alright.

Ya a HUGE releif. I would hate to have the thought of what I would have to do to recover, let alone worry about dying.

I've been having symptoms very similar to what you describe for the last couple years. I've found that certain supplements help a great deal with this kind of problem. You might look into supplementing magnesium and vitamin c. The vitamin c should be in megadose quantities (about 1.5 to 4 grams/day). You'd be surprised at how effective natural vitamin and mineral supplementation can be for this kind of problem. After having been on the vitamin C for a couple months, I no longer have those annoying thumps or flutters occuring with any significant frequency and my body deals with stress and anxiety much better. With vitamin c, though, the quantity is critical. You won't be able to get enough from just a couple glasses of OJ, you need to pop a 500mg tablet every 2 or 3 hours to get the full benefit. It's worth it, though, trust me. And it's safe, vit c has no known toxicity level and excess quantities are easily passed by the body. Oh, and I almost forgot fish oil. Fish oil is a natural anti-arrhythmic.

Time for shuteye, good luck to you.
