OFF CANADA'S EAST COAST (Reuters) - Canadian hunters started shooting and clubbing harp seal pups on Saturday at the start of an annual hunt that is the focus of a tech-savvy protest by animal rights groups.

This year, 325,000 young seals will be killed on the ice floes off the East Coast where the animals gather.

Unusually warm weather means the floes are a fraction of their normal size and thickness, prompting hunters to kill the seals individually rather than clubbing them to death en masse as they cluster on the ice in pools of blood.

"It's slow going. The ice is not full of seals all over the place," said Roger Simon of Canada's federal fisheries ministry, which oversees the hunt.

The crack of rifle fire could be heard continually as hunters in boats shot seals as they lay on tiny floes and then dashed over to the bodies in hopes of retrieving them before they slipped off the ice and sank.

Once the animals are killed, they are skinned and taken into the hunters' boats. The pelt is taken to make coats while the rest of the carcass is usually left behind.

At one point a hunter, frustrated at the activists' presence, picked up the bloody carcass of a skinned seal and threw it at a small inflatable craft full of protesters and journalists. It hit the boat and sank.

One sealing boat steamed straight toward the journalists' craft and turned at the last moment, sending a wave crashing over the observers.

Canada says the hunt gives the local economy a crucial boost and helps keep a harp seal population of almost six million animals in check.

The Humane Society of the United States has chartered a 110-foot (30-meter) boat to follow the hunt and is putting film and videos of the killings on its Web site.

"It's disgusting when you stand out here and look at what the seals have been through already. They're clinging on for life as it is, thanks to the effects of global warming," said the society's Rebecca Aldworth.

"I'm really appalled the Canadian government continues to allow this slaughter. There's no need for anyone to be out here killing seals," she told Reuters from the hunting zone.

CANADA SAYS KILLINGS ARE HUMANE

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canada was behaving responsibly and would enforce rules ensuring that the seals were killed humanely.

"Unfortunately here we're to some degree the victim of a bit of an international propaganda campaign," he said on Friday.

Celebrities such as former French film star Brigitte Bardot and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney called on Ottawa this week to stop the hunt.

Aldworth repeated calls for an international boycott of Canadian seafood to protest what she said was "incredible cruelty at the hunt, including dragging conscious seals across the ice with boathooks, shooting seals and leaving them to suffer in agony and skinning seals alive."

The first part of the hunt, which takes place near the Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, usually takes about 10 to 12 days to complete. This year's quotes is just over 90,000 seals.

The second and larger stage, off the coast of Newfoundland, starts on April 4.

Seals get good publicity because they are "cute". They have faces that apparently communicate innocence and softness to some people. That makes it less popular than shooting wild boar or killing off overpopulations of deer or bears, example.

Yeh, I bet thats a real easy task!

I hardly see how hitting them over the head is any less "humane" than shooting them. They're dead either way, and shooting isn't even an instant death. You whack an animal over the head with a heavy club and its going to die pretty quick. You shoot an animal, who knows how long it could take to die. Shooting a deer and chasing it until it drops and dies is very common, it isn't an instant death.

Seals are cute. Thats the only reason anyone cares. Truth is, the hunt is needed to control the population. Oh my God, rationale, no way!

Dogs are chained to fences with razor sharp wires then stabbed in the groin and beat with baseball bats to break their bones to make them suffer as much pain as possible to boost the andrenalin which they believe makes the dog meat tender.

The dogs are then skinned while still alive.

Dude, keyword is consume. Seals are consumed (not the meat, but the pelts). Lobsters are consumed. Pigs scream while being slaughtered and they also are consumed.

Lobster is a delicacy, it's not required by your body to function properly. While you may like exquisite cuisine, some like wearing seal coats. It's not in your power to tell them what to do since you're just being a hypocrite yourself.

Btw, none of the seal meat is being wasted in mother nature. It's not a synthetic material so it gets processed throughout the years.

As for lobsters and pain, that was an example since I'm not familiar with how they function. In any way, they are living creatures that we needlessly kill for luxury.

No, the "only" reason isn't vanity. The most important reason is population control. How many times does this need to be said for people to understand it? If the seal population is not controlled to an amount that the environment can sustain, not only will many other species be eliminated but many seals will also die from hunger and sickness.

The "vanity" part is what gets hunters out there hunting the seal. Without that, the government would need to pay people to do the killing, which actually isn't that uncommon to begin with. Cities nationwide do this all the time with everything from deer to birds.

Furthermore, can seal meat even be eaten? Is it edible? Is it good? If the answer is "yes" to any of these questions, then sure, maybe the hunters should start using the meat. Even if they don't, that meat will be eaten by creatures of the sea. Again, circle of life.

Not all animals are worth eating, by the way. I don't see anybody eating rats. I've heard raccoons make for horrible meat and people all over country hunt raccoons every year specifically for the pelt. The coyotes eat the meat.

They die a slow painful death but you still eat Porterhouse and Hamburgers. Is it because a cow isn't cute? Oh snap...what about Veil? Baby cows are so adorably cute but you don't think about that when you order veil parmessan, do you? I dated a girl once that said she wouldn't eat any animal that was "cute"...I dumped her ass faster than yesterday's Taco Bell. So only cute animals deserve protection? I don't see any hippie groups out there protecting the three-toed sloth or the rats they have in New Orleans running rampant. Deer are pretty cute but I'll shoot one in the stomach instead of the heart just so I can follow its blood trail before I have to field dress it. It's a lot cleaner for me and so what if the deer suffers. It will still taste just as good.
