need 42" HD monitor help dvi? hdmi?

its a sony plasma 42" monitor

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...8465&CatId=387

when i hook it up with a dvi to hdmi cable i get no sound but i get a picture. the same dvd player hooked up to another v via HDMI puts out a picture and sound.. so its not the dvd player.

question is this. does sound travel through DVI?

i bought one of those cords that connects the tv (dvi) to the dvd (hdmi)

im lost

DVI transfers only video, not sound. HDMI transfers both.

If you connect a DVI output to a HDMI converter, it will only passthrough the video, as the sound was never present.

From that Tigerdirect link, there's a photogallery which includes this image:

http://images.tigerdirect.com/SkuIma...S08-4216-s.JPG

There's an audio input which corresponds to that DVI input ("INPUT 1" area in the image). Once you connect that, you should get sound working fine.

Not sure about the audio cable you need -- when I got my Plasma last summer, I paid for them to set it all up.

Do you have an audio cable with red and white on one end, and red and white on the other end? i.e. something like:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...5355&CatId=449

Perhaps from that picture, one of them goes in the hole next to Input 1, and the other next to Input 2? I can't see how else they'd be doing stereo input, hmmmm. Although, maybe it's another type of cable.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=449&Nav=|c:79|&Sort=3&Recs= 10

shows other audio cables, and "RCA Audio" cables seem to be the dominant type, with 2 connectors at each end.

Yeah, that Plasma model looks very limited --- HDTV models, with HDMI and higher resolution (at least 1024x768) might make more sense, if it doesn't break your budget, and if you plan to watch HDTV on cable/satellite.
