disproving the existence of god will only harden the beliefs of most. its generally the sense of hope, sense of control, sense of purpose and answers that sell ... not "god". these are not things that can easily pryed away from people. i would argue that god is irrelevent to religion.

I broached the same issue regarding Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad, Poor Dad"--even if the messenger is a liar, does it necessarily mean the message is worthless? I see religious text as a catalyst for the inner morality everyone possesses. It is not absolutely necessary to release inner morality and practice kindness, compassion, and goodwill towards fellow human beings. However, whatever releases this inner morality whether aided by religion, philosophy, or self-knowledge is good by me. The different paths differ in terms of the amount of experience, iteration, and other factors. I am not about to judge which path is 'best'--everyone has a path that will work best for him or her. Everyone is different.

It's proven constantly with cults who are centered on some beleif that will happen on a certain day or whatever which does not materialize. it never causes the dissolution of the cult... and usually triggers growth.

A prime example of this is the creation of Seventh Day Adventist Church/William Smith.

A religion can grow and thrive based on absolutely absurd premises such as the Mormons/Joseph Smith or Jehovahs Witnesses (who still believe the earth is only 6000 years old and dinosaurs never existed).

It's logically impossible to prove that something does not exist. Religion is based on that very point, it's something that can be based only on irrational beliefs, and thus is immune to most criticism.

But aside from that, many things that were said in this thread aren't true at all.

First and foremost, religion in most cases is not a foundation of values. Rather, the values are based on people's existing cultural and instinctive intuitions, which are stripped from their origins and turned into abstract, impersonal concepts, and are subsequently turned into "universal truths" by relating them to an infallible source.

Secondly, persecution can actually work against religions. The spread of both christianity and islam is in large part due to the prohibition and persecution of other religions. If you look at the European Reformation, many forms of christianity only thrived because they had political backing (often based on political motives, e.g. many German nobles supported Lutheranism because it allowed them to confiscate lands belonging to the Catholic church). However, some relatively popular radical reformists and their followers were effectively wiped out because they did not have backing from the political rulers of the day.
