Selling domains using escrow.com ? help

Just had a guy in another country offer to pick up a domain for a decent price, the problem is i don't trust doing business with people in turkey

He suggested using escrow.com, but i'd like to find out whats up before i go any further, i'm not looking to have this domain jacked.

Anyone with any experience with escrow.com, or anyone have any experience in dealing with people from turkey?

Escorw is good, but before you set up the transaction, change the inspection time to the shortest period possible (the standard is like 5 days). I have had people jerk me around for almost the full period rather than accepting the transfer when it was done.

If you are dealing with people in "other" countries, I would suggest letting their payment sit as long as you are allowed before making the transfer, giving escrow additional time to check for fraud (or time for their CC payment to dump).

I am 100% so far selling domains via Escrow.

Pr0, we have sold many domains through escrow.com with no incidents. Like RawAlex said make the inspection period 1 day.

wtf? a month?

seriously thats impossible, i guess they have a week max, and the buyer wouldnt agree to a month anyway

btw country isnt a problem, i bought a domain name from a person who posted in this thread for $17k if i remember right, we didnt know each other, and i was buying form a polish adress, obviously there were no problems for any of us

if anything, ask escrow if the guy had been already using them to buy domains in the past, if they confirm it, then he is most likely legit

Escrow.com is one mainstream company that i do trust.... if you have any issues, just ask for Andee Hill - she is the best one to deal with.

Pro,

have bought and sold tons of domains using escrow.com, never a problem once.

Sold 1 domain to Turkey once, tr.net - didn't use escrow, just signed a paper, faxed, waited for wire, then transfered.

Good Luck

Todd

I've bought and sold several domains through escrow.com, also no problems, and never heard of any problems. However, I do sometimes wonder about loopholes, if either seller or buyer were trying to pull a scam. For example, suppose the buyer pays escrow.com, requests a transfer, but then transfers the domain to a different identity than their own, and says to escrow.com they never got the domain. Or similarly, what if the seller authorized a transfer to another of their own identities, and lied and said the transfer was made to the buyer. Maybe it would get sorted out, but it would be a messy situation.

One time with a nervous seller, I asked escrow.com to send a record of a few my previous escrow.com transactions to the seller. That added to their confidence that I wasn't a flake or a scammer. Pr0, since the person buying the domain suggested escrow.com, they've probably used escrow.com in the past, so if you're still nervous, perhaps you could ask if the seller would authorize escrow.com to release info on some previous transactions?

Ok well i went ahead with the sale, we agreed on a price.

The only issue i have is that he is using a gmail acct & is from out of country.

But we will see what happens.....

My question is, once he sends in the funds....its saying i will need to switch the whois info to his, so he can review it?

How all does that work out, so that he can't gank it to another registrar during the 1 day review period? And what can i do to protect myself?

Does a live person work with the transaction, or is it all computer done? lol

Pro,

Escrow.com will or does have the buyers funds, so if anything did go wierd which I doubt but you are protected.... If paid by wire - well if they play trickery with your domain you will get paid..

Pro,

Has the buyer sent / has escrow recieved funds for the domain sale yet?

Once escrow recieves the funds - you are pretty darn safe.

you will be ok Pro

with us, 95% of the time - we never use escrow whether were buying or selling. usually fax over a contract, check the buyer or seller out, give them wire info, all is good.

When we sold tr.net to that turkish univ / company they were a bit worried but I said look, am I going to screw someone over? and not for 40k LOL

it was all good, got the wire, did the transfer - everyone was happy. but for safety - escrow is best.

Just for clarification: Once Escrow.com got the money you have to transfer/push the domain to the buyer. It doesn't mean that you could only change the whois information and still have the domain in your account at your registrar. The buyer needs to get control over the domain or he will never instruct Escrow.com to release the funds to you.

I just sold a domain through escrow, the moment they domain is transferred and you sen proof they take an 48 hour delay for the buyer to give his info, if not ............. they will transfer funds to you, as in I sold loads of domains through afternic and escrow no problems ever

so what if i transfer it over & he never instructs escrow to send the funds?

i suppose i could make a case on that to get the money anyways?

Escrow.com is OK. I have used it without problems.

However, you will probably get better customer service from the escrow services at Moniker.com/ DomainSystems.com. They offer escrow services also.

going to check out the rates on there versus escrow, I've always heard awesome things about both of those other companies as well...

monte monte monte... moniker's rates look very nice

That's why there is an inspection period (and that's why you should make the inspection period not to long). If the buyer does nothing, Escrow.com will release the funds after the inspection period.

Personally, I had never any problems with Escrow.com and I think it's pretty safe, but in my opinion Moniker offers the best protection for buyers and sellers.

pr0 - we have been doing domain escrow transactions since the late 90's...we were the first company to create a domain escrow transaction. we are also the only ones that put both the domain and the funds into escrow and complete the transaction as an escrow agent with customized legal agreements or payment plans, etc.

Let me know if I can help you or anyone else with this.
