The Swiss played well, but this was the kind of game Canada needed to wake them up like in Salt Lake. They'll be back and in the Gold medal game, no worries.

The Finland-Czech game is good so far. 2-2 with 1 period left.

Theory:

With the NHL going back to a more open-ice style (rules changes, etc.) it's benefitting the European players/teams more - esp. on the bigger ice surface, which they didn't have in Salt Lake City.

Don't be surprised if a team like Slovakia, Finland, Czech wins the gold and Canada/USA *MAY* not even be in the final game. You read it here first.

Your theory is valid.

But I also think that many people in N America are overlooking the fact that there are pro leagues in Europe and Russia that are producing some world class players. We never get to see those teams play except for their best players now, in the Olympics.... and we better wake up.

The NHL is no longer the end-all be-all it once was for having the world's greatest players.

Thus I support that last statement you made. Any one of about a half dozen teams could take the 3 medals in Italy. The Fins are looking good and they are undefeated, the Russians are playing well, the Swiss looked very good today, Latvia now has a strong team, Slovakia looks good, and the Swedes are always a contender.

It's anybody's game this time.

K. Seems like some Canadiens are afraid of the US having success in hockey esp. if their team loses. Is that like that for Canadiens as a whole?

Are they afraid of the US having success in hockey or are they happy when the US gets hosed in hockey?

There's a difference. :D

And before anyone mouths off at me, I've been watching and playing hockey my whole life. I love when the game is played well regardless of who is winning. I cheered for the US during that whole "miracle on ice" thing when they beat the Russians just as I cheered for team Canada when we squeaked past the Russians in '72. Of course I cheer the loudest when Canada wins, but I can admit when a team from some other country is playing great hockey.

Speaking for both teams USA and Canada, it always takes a few games for them to get their sea legs. They have probably felt a little jet lag, and the players are lumped in with a group of guys who they haven't played alongside very often (if at all). I'm sure they'll start putting their best games together this week.

So most Canadiens are happy when the US loses then?

There's a difference between being happy when your team/country wins and being happy when the US loses (even if it has nothing to do w/ your country winning).

Probably. I wouldn't really know what "most Canadians" think. We don't all think the same.

I think some Americans do tend to go overboard with the whole "We rule the world" shit and the "we're better than you" shit..... so that might explain why some others feel an extra bit of warmth in their insides when the US gets their ass handed to them.

Not only that but some (keyword: "some") Americans themselves get all bitter and scornful when another country (but especially Canada for some reason) is more often than not their superior in a sport, but especially so in a high-profile sport such as hockey.

But again, I can only speak for myself. I'm happy when the game is played well no matter who is doing the playing. Whether it's the Russians who win gold or the USA or whomever, they will have earned it, you can bet on that.

I hear ya. But I think things are changing in the US. Take the men's basketball team for example. Alot of people were actually hoping they would lose when they did.

well as I specifically said, Im happy when canada wins...I dont care against who they win... so no, Im not one of those anti-american canadians if that's what you are wondering...

but as CDSmith said...it's not like we all think the same!...Hell I'd rather see US win some medals instead of russia or china...

You mean the "Olympic dream team"? Okay, here's the thing..... when one team in a competition is so far outclassing the rest for several years everyone wants that team to lose eventually except for that team's country. :D

Seriously, take the Russians. They dominate regularly in so many Olympic events that some people just love it when some athlete from some hole-in-the-wall country comes along and beats the Russian. It's human nature. People love to cheer for the underdog.

As for Olympic hockey, I don't think you have much to worry about in that department.... the USA IS the underdog this time. lol. They're not the only underdog mind you, but they certainly aren't favored to win gold, probably not silver either.
