Frist plans June vote to ban gay marriage

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday he plans a vote in early June on a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/02/...age/index.html

So what does GFY think? Are my partner and I, who have been together for 7.5 years since we were 19 and 20 years old, such a threat to this country that the Constitution of the United State of America should be amended to prevent us from every having equal rights in this country?

This man makes me so mad my blood boils. I can't begin to tell everyone how something like this makes those of us who happen to have been born homosexual feel.......

Wow its pretty sad to ban something that is according to people's own free will. It just shows there are still plenty of fucktards in the world.

A waste of money. Even if it passes (which it won't) it would get overturned by the Supreme Court.

Family Law is a State issue, not Federal.

Its already banned in TN. I have no problems with civil unions. What they really should do is make all marriages civil unions, and keep the Government out of it. Let marriages happen within the Church.

They're seeking to add an amendment to the constitution. If they succeed in doing that, the Supreme Court would have no authority to overturn it. It would literally become a fundamental cornerstone of our country's governance, just like the right to freedom of speech is.

It could EASILY be 100 years or better before the possibility of a new constitutional amendent would be proposed and passed to undo it.

We're talking about a 67 super majority vote in the Senate and retification by 2/3 of the states.

That's because you're an uneducated bigot. I'm sorry, but I have nothing but hate in my heart for anyone that tells me that my relationship, which has already proven to be more stable than over 60% of heterosexual relationships, doesn't deserve protection.

Tell me I shouldn't have the right to visit my partner in the hospital should he get sick, to bury him should he die, to inherit the house we share together without being taxed out of it, then tell me "I don't mean to offend any gays"? Fuck you.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to be guaranteed such fundamental protections as that without us being included in federal marriage laws. States can, have, and continue to overturn living wills, wills, trusts, and contracts between homosexual couples on a daily basis. There is literally no way for us to insure our protection, no matter how many thousands of dollars we spend having legal documents drawn up.

love, being a universal emotion, encompasses every human being, gay or otherwise. a prohibition on legal marriage will violate gays' right of happiness.

With all due respect, you have not proven shit. I have been married twice, and both times were for over 7.5 years

7.5 years is a walk in the park.

Besides, there are plenty of states that have laws that give gays the rights to have life partners that have essentially the same rights as a married couple . . . . something that I can not have unless I want to marry the chick. How fair is that?

You know jack shit about US law. Unless the state says it is legal for two people of the same gender to get married, it is not a legal marriage.

And marriage is hardly a guarantee of happiness, trust me on this.

I dont know the rules in the US, but in Sweden we have "partnership"-marriages which gives the same rights as a marriage in church. I think its up to the church, not the goverment if they should marry two people, gay or not. Since its in the bible: "Marriage is an institution between man and woman", the church here will not marry gay people, but I think parnership is OK.

You are right about that, but it IS a choice. And I believe people are still free in their choices. We live in a fucking democracy for christ sake...

it's legal in Canada, I believe it's legal in the UK.. it's just a matter of time before it becomes legal in the US I would think

I doubt they'll be able to put this through if it's an amendment to the constitution, and if they try to, I'm sure there will be mass protesting and it probably wouldn't happen

how many changes have there been to the constitution in the last 10 years?

Yep Frist is so in tune with the really important things.

What a fucking tool. I have always found in life that the people who scream the loudest against something, are normally that something.

Bill Frist, you go girl!

it's pretty simple. Straight people have fucked marrige up plenty on thier own. Over 50% of marriges end in divorce. If you factor out those that get married past the age of 55 (there are more and more of them these days) that number jumps to around 60%.

I see people get married and divorced within a year or two all the time. So how can anyone say that gay people getting married would cause harm to the "institution" of marriage? It won't.

In the end if a gay couple gets married it doesn't make a straight couple married less valid. It's not going to cause straight couple to suddenly break up. It has no effect what's so ever.

This is the melting pot of the world. We supposedly say that all people are created equal. So who is it that gets to decide that just because someone is gay they are not worthy of the same things that a straight person is?

The State of California has adopted domestic partnership legislation that provides gay and lesbian couples with most of the rights given to heterosexual couples.

Funny thing is, in order for me to enjoy these rights I have to get married. How come I can't just live with a chick and enjoy the same rights as a gay couple? Doesn't sound very fair to me.
