Do you think about the effect of your words on your biz before you post?
I'm just curious....
Someone said something shitty to me in another thread-someone I've never, that I recall, had any contact with, so I was somewhat amused and even more so, puzzled by it. This person seems to be pretty talented at what he or she does, but after having been ambushed by him or her, I would likely never do business with him or her. I know this is GFY and all, but really, that's a shaky excuse for bad behavior when your actions or words, more accurately, can affect your bottom line. When you behave professionally, people perceive you as professional. When you act like a boorish ass, that's the perception people have of you, and it would take a pretty brilliant talent to be able to overcome that kind of a reputation-especially when there are at least a dozen prominent competitors equally talented who do NOT have shitty attitudes. There are people here who can give your business a big boost should you come into some sort of deal or partnership with them...and I'd wager many of them do keep an eye on how the people they are interested in working with behave. So, maybe it's just me, but I do try my best to mind my p's and q's and represent myself the best way I can, particularly when I am in a debate with someone, because that's a good indicator of how you will react under pressure. Of course we all make mistakes sometimes, and I am no exception to that rule, that's for sure. But I don't start shit just to get a reaction, and I really try not to step on anyone's toes unless they really, really asked for it, because you never know who you may need in the future. ![]() |

Most of the time I do, but I won't ass kiss someone I don't like, just because it might make me some money.

Unless it's a light hearted, easy-to-respond thread, I carefully weigh what consequences my responses may evoke. That's probably why I don't have as many posts as alot of other people.

You'd think we would all be so careful. However it seems some could care less.

always, but i don't think a lengthy post and carefully chosen words have a great affect on the business here.

It's not a matter of taking things personally. I've had much worse said to me here and brushed it off, but I do make a mental note. If I'm considering hiring someone, or choosing which sponsor to highlight, or whatnot, and all other things are equal, a negative interaction is enough to send me the other way. Especially when I did nothing to provoke it...I remember Chris saying some rotten things to me, but I don't hold it over his head at all, because I know I pretty much brought it on myself.
To me, someone's personality is a factor in my business decision..if they present themselves well, I will be proud to say I work with them. If they are even-tempered, I don't have to worry about them reflecting negatively on me. If they go around treating people like shit, it will eventually catch up to them, and it will likely affect me, so I'd rather work with someone I enjoy working with. It's not *just* skill that gets you by in life. It is personality, too. And I watch how people treat other people, as well, not just how they treat me. If webmaster A treats everyone like shit, chances are higher he's gonna fuck me over. I don't mean those "brutally honest to the point of being pricks" people, either. At least you always know where you stand with those guys. Maybe I'm thinking like a woman, but I'm pretty sure everyone, man or woman, would prefer to do business with people they like, respect, and trust. |

yes, what you say can be counterproductive for you, or be positive and get you more business, but your actions have more weight imho.

I have found that most people care more about making money than whether or not somebody hurt their feelings.
I "do business" with tons of people I know I would have a difficult time getting along with one-on-one. Fortunately I don't have to be somebody's best buddy to make money together. Too much pride can cost you a lot of money.

Mr Izz had a post a week or so ago, about how many times he didn't hit the "submit" button, or something like that. I replied that I've written thousands of words I haven't submitted; just either closed the browser window, hit the back button... something, except hitting "submit".
So yea. There's many things I wanted to say but just didn't feel it was appropriate saying in the greater scheme of things.
