Crazy gun-toting americans patrolling the US-Canada border...

I saw these guys on TV who're patrolling the border while armed. They aren't law enforcement, just regular citizens. Now there's nothing I hate more than busy bodies, especially ones who're carrying loaded firearms to "Defend America". Now If I was a smuggler, I'd be carrying a gun on me, and, if I happened to come across these valiant defenders of an invisible line, I'd shoot them out of spite.

And the best part is, you'd probably only get a manslaughter charge, which equates to around 2 years probation in Canada these days. I mean, you kill them all, they're armed, so who's gonna know it was nothing more than a dope smuggler defending himself from self-righteous hicks?

Win-Win situation.

In the US, our attitude is that if the government won't take care of it, we will take care of it ourselves. After all, the constitution and bill of rights are all about the limits that the PEOPLE place on the government, not the limits that the Government places on the people. I know that Canadians have been brought up in a system where the government always had the power and that only the government is allowed to have weapons now, but we think a little differently down here.

I think it's great. They aren't busy bodies, they are stepping up to help our security. Our police, border patrol and armed forces come from people that step up to do the job. The same thing is happening on the US-Mexico border, and it's about time. I WISH that smugglers would try shooting it out with US citizens, you would see the number of volunteers SKYROCKET. We do have a real security problem, until our borders are controlled, then all the customs agents in all the airports are just wasting their time.

It really burns me up that this administration doesn't do more to control our borders, it makes homeland security into a joke.

Nothing to do with Canadians, actually. It's the people that can get into Canada more easily than into the US, then come across our uncontrolled border with no big problems.... same thing for Mexico.

If I was a terrorist trying to get into the US, it would be simple. Just go to Canada, or Mexico, then come across the border in the middle of nowhere between checkpoints.

....and Hi Allen!

exactly

our government here may be too PC to utilize racial profiling but the good ol' boys in the north woods aren't

I don't think very many wandering french canadians are going to have anything to be concerned about unless they put on a turban or something...

As opposed to a fat ass, "do-nothing" Canadians like yourself, and directfiesta..etc, who do nothing but lurk behind their keyboards and WHINE AND COMPLAIN ABOUT USA. No ideas, no alternatives, just worthless, repetitive, boring, and continuous bitching...

The minutemen have yet to do anything illegal, and have provided invaluable support to the law enforcement authorities. They have effectively shut down down illegal border crossings in many areas they have patrolled. They are to be congratulated....

Actually the army is not used to patrol the borders, even if there were no conflicts they still wouldn't be there.

You really are very jingoistic, aren't you?

Yes, they radio the border patrol. As US citizens witnessing a crime (illegal entry), they can hold you under citizens arrest until law enforcement gets there. They have been VERY effective in the areas that they have patrolled, on both the Northern and the Southern borders.

It's sad that people have to patrol their borders in order to feel safe... But when you've made yourself a target (as the U.S. has) then I guess it's the only option when it comes to defending against the Islamic "freedom fighters".

I think it's a false sense of security though, if a terrorist wanted to get into the U.S. they would easily be able too, a few power hungry hicks with rifles aren't going to stop them.

Not to mention the majority of terrorist attacks on the U.S. have been caused by U.S. citizens, not foreigners. I don't think building a "great wall" is going to help the situation, it will just further isolate the country.

Effective on the Norther border? I've heard lots of Mexicans try to get into the US for work... but why the hell would a Canadian want to border jump into the U.S.? We've got more jobs and a higher minimum wage up here.

Surely there can't be that many terrorists trying to gain access through other countries... unless they're trying to keep out our grade A canadian marijuana, which would be a pretty lame cause.

The EU is not a target? LMAO!!! I think that you are being VERY short sighted if you don't think that the whole of the west is not going to be targeted by Islamic radicals.

...and although most of historic terrorism has been from within the US, the situation is changing quite a bit. Remember all of the Hijackings in Europe in the 70s?

It's a lot more than just the terrorist situation however. Along the southern borders there are an estimated 50,000 illegal border crossing each MONTH. There needs to be some control of borders. People should still be able to come into the US of course, but they need to do it LEGALLY, just like every other country in the world requires.

Ok first of 'who're' is NOT a fucking word! 'who are' ffs

I agree with you about idiots carrying guns purely because of their own paranoid propaganda machine. The US is the most painful country to get into.

Yup.... because in those days, pre 911, the customs agents did not have access to nearly as many records and technology, as they do now. There was no electronic fingerprinting with cross matching, etc....

You want to shoot them why? Because they are exercising their Constitutional Rights? They aren't hurting anyone and they aren't breaking any laws. Instead of spending your time worrying about what someone in another country is doing that has absolutely NO bearing or effect on you, your country, or any other country, why don't you try worrying about the problems that YOUR OWN COUNTRY is facing (and obviously there are some, since your sig reads "I hate Canada").

Got to watch out for the crazies that you find out in the middle of nowhere with a loaded weapon. Ignoring them does not make them go away or keep them from killing you and burying the body where you wont be found..EVER.

They might not call border patrol... but call their redneck buddies to join them in the hunt

People criticized the Guardian Angels led by Curtis Sliwa back in the late 70's, those gangs of red-beret-wearing crime fighters who rode the subways of several major US cities for the purpose of detering crime. In spite of the nay-sayers they were somewhat successful in their efforts, and people felt safer knowing they were around.

I think this might be a similar thing happening here, with the so-called 'Minute men'.
