| Saw Brokeback Mountain Overhyped bullshit. A slow, slow movie with too many frivilous scenes that do nothing to advance or connect the story that often jump like they had to edit a lot to get the movie down to it's already excruciating 2 hours to the anti-climatic double fucked up ending. If this is "the best movie of the year" I am not going back to the theater The only real positive review I can give the movie is that the 2 leads made for nice eye candy. I would have called the 45 miles we had to travel each way to see it a total waste had we not stopped by a Circuit City and I picked up a couple of DVDs, a double disc set of all of the "School House Rock!" with a slew of bonus features and the new 2 disc "Wizard of Oz" set with 10 hours of bonus features. |

 | I enjoyed it but don't think it is the best movie I have ever seen. I think it was a very 'world cinema' feel movie for American cinema and that is what a lot of people are being mystified by. I think Jake did a better job than Heath and I think the direction was very good. However, I still don't get why it is heroic for a straight actor to play gay. It would be a bunch bigger 'victory' if it was a film with gay themes with gay actors that got such publicity. |

I guess I was expecting a bittersweet, perhaps humor tinged movie, but although it had it's moments it was labored. There were too many scenes that if edited out or replaced with ones concentrating on the central characters and brought down to about 90 minutes would make a much more enjoyable film. I was close to nodding a couple of times. Between all the riding around we did and sitting in the theater so long my lower back was killing me and in the last 30 minutes of the movie I was thinking more how nice it would be to go lie down, so that may have clouded my positives with the movie. I'll probably give it another shot when it hits DVD or the movie channels.

There were some bits that really got me but I did feel that it jumped into the relationship too fast. Like there was no reason at the time it happened for it to happen from what the narrative had shown us at that point. I haven't read the story it is based on to know if there is more buildup in the story. Once that happened I was okay with the rest of the film aslong as I kept reminding myself it was the 1960's. Though, I did think a few times it was set in the same state Matthew Sheppard was killed in so perhaps it hasn't moved on all that much. For a kick check out the IMDB message board for the movie..some people have seen it ten ore more times in the cinema. Looks like it is hitting a certain group (mostly younger) of the gay community who are just happy to be represented at all.

Brokeback Mountain is certainly not the "shove it down your throat" homosexual agenda many right-wingers have tried to cast it (especially as previously noted that the only remotely "explicit" sex scenes are heterosexual). Hollywood has produced solidly entertaining gay-themed films like "Torch Song Trilogy", "La Cage Au Folles", "The Ritz", "To Wong Foo", "Priscilla"... I'm not sure gay actors or directors/producers would have made Brokeback Mountan a better film but perhaps a gay editor would have been a hell of a start

 | I haven't seen that movie. But with all the hype and brouhaha about Brokeback Mountain, I think I'm now heading towards the moviehouse. |
