Do you buy American?

Does blind patriotism lead your decisions to purchase or do you buy the best product for the money regardless of origin?

it's with the quality. not with the brand.

For many products, American-made isn't an option anymore.

Or... at least not an option in the big-box retail stores.

WalMart and others have made it almost impossible to avoid buying Chinese. Nothing seems to be made in the US or Canada anymore.

I buy the highest quality shit for the least amount of money. Which usually means it's coming from somewhere Asian. ;)

We've yet to learn how to make good shit. Even our cars aren't that great anymore.

We can make good shit... we just demand to be paid a fair wage for it! And we like to buy good shit... we just don't want to pay that much for it!

Which is why most people buy foreign-made products -- decent quality, rock-bottom price!

I am more of the latter. I don't look at country of origin. I look at quality/cost/ROI total value.

I'm the same way. I could care less where it's made if it's a quality product. There are many American made products that are superior, there are many that are inferior. It matters to me not where it's from but rather how good it is.

Then there's the patriotism side of the issue. If we can't build the best products and our economy suffers who's fault is it? Is it our fault for not buying these products or is it the manufacturers fault for making crap?

I dont think it really matters anymore....

I grew up in Michigan. Almost everyone in my family has worked for the auto industry, including myself....

I used to make dash guages for GM and Jaguar.

Back in the day.... It was a sin to buy anything other then American. You did not want to drive into your works parking lot with a foreign car. People were beaten up for driving foreign. The autoworker union guys were dead seriuos, about spreading the message "buy American".

Since then, ALOT of GM jobs went to Mexico, and now we build Hondas and Toyotas at American plants with American workers.

15 years ago, it may have made a difference, but not now.

I looked at all the presents this year under the Christmas tree and 95% of the stuff was made in China. I was surprised. Bought a lot of the stuff from Wal Mart and it seems that everything in that store is Chinese.

It's not blind patriotism for some one to want to buy products from their own country(which ever country it may be). But price is how most people shop, and that's almost always imported.

I don't think the people you're referring to only buy American products because of "patriotism", I think they do it because they think it supports keeping smaller shit jobs in the States and "fights" the Wal-Marts of the world.

Frankly, I think the Wal-Marts of the world are what will keep the States a superpower. By outsourcing "crap jobs" it forces our citizens to become smarter and stronger to stay alive. Thats just my theory, I'm not going to pretend to know all of the economics behind it.

The USA has a 200 Billion $ trade deficit with China. What do you think most people are doing? It's necessary to have these cheap goods to buy the votes of those with low paying jobs. According to FOX News not buying goods made in China would be unpatriotic. Haven't you been watching the news?

I don't care where it comes from as long as it's quality. Many of the companies are in bed with each other anyway, so something manufactured in China may still be partly American owned.
