what's the point of buying an expensive notebook

You know that no matter what notebook you buy today, in less than years it will be outdated and you will want to buy another more performing one or with better design.

LOL. I don't know about Bestbuy, but at Futureshop (Bestbuy sister store), they will find all sorts of excuses for not honouring their waranty. I assume it's the same with Bestbuy

BestBuy has the worst return policy on the fucking face of the Earth. Their replacement plans are bullshit scams. It's their company policy to fuck customers in their asses.

Anyways you can always get a lease through places like Dell Small Business or similar places and just upgrade yourself every couple of years.

That's what I though considering it is the parent company of Futureshop here in Canada which is known for their crooked return policy. They pressure you to get their extended "hassle free" warranty but seldom honour it.

My Powerbook is three years old and each time Apple upgrades the OS it gets faster. I don't plan on a replacement until some new application requires a different machine.

I don't understand people who always need to be using a $2500 laptop and they never do anything that comes close to it's potential.

One of mine is a 200mhz Pentium, and with no problems I run Apache, MySql, EditPlus and a couple MSIE windows. All I use it for is to code with, and it works flawlessly for that.

When I worked retail management, I replaced numerous computers and other expensive electronics that had bought the extended warranty.
The deal was that if we sent it to repair for the same problem three times already, on the fourth issue, it was replaced with the same model *or* a new model of equal features.
It's actually cheaper for the store that way, because "in-warranty" repairs are charged to the store. While "extended warranty" repairs are covered by the parent company. SO getting a replacement without the extended warranty is gonna be a no-go unless it's inside the normal return period and you have every last scrap of package and receipt.

I got a very decent one like 3-4 years ago and when looking at the specs of the cheap ones they're selling today, mine still kicks their ass
it still handles every program i use without lagging.
I can't play the newest games on it, but i see that as a good thing ... more time for biz ;)

More like why get your dick sucked for $1,000 when you can get it sucked for $500. Either way, you'll still want it sucked again in two hours.

BS, I've had my laptop almost 3 years now. Don't buy cheap $1000 laptops and they will last alot longer. This one still has a good few years left in it unless the board or something like that goes out. Buy top of the line not the cheap little ones.

yeah but if you buy an advanced one most programs you need will run on it for like 5 years instead of 1.

You get what you pay for.

My desktops run well for three years or more because we buy quality parts.

The same holds true for a laptop. Buy quality. Spend the money and make sure the company from whom you buy it has an outstanding warranty program....

Cut corners and you're setting yourself up for aggravation. This industry is aggravating enough ....and since our computers, whether they are desktops or notebooks, are the cornerstone of what we do....it's a business investment...

But aren't tired of seing your 3-year old notebook when you can get a thinner, higher screen resolution and better performance one?
From what I've seen, people who buy expensive computers are the type of people that always want the latest stuff and purchase more often computers than the low tech people....

I didn't buy an expensive notebook - I had a second hand P133/32Mb RAM one from 1997 which was stolen about 9 months ago, and I recieved a brand new replacement. Turns out the obsolete POS I had was "business grade" so the insurance company had to upgrade the quote (nearly doubling it) to a replacement business grade one. It ended up being 5 times the cash value of what I originally paid for the old laptop.

It's effectively already obsolete but I can see this one lasting a while.

You had insurance on a 1997 computer?
