Don't put your service at home man. You go to the supermarket for groceries too right instead of stocking shit at your house?

Hosting providers are cheaper and smarter solution. They usually have 24/7 support, better environment for your servers than under a deskand they have multiple connections to multiple cirquits. Save yourself a lot of hassle and headache.

Go with a good ISP like most of us all do.

descent connection....let's say a T3 but then the providers and
telcos connect 20 T3 on a T3 Hub....or somewhere in between
is a full cirquit... try measuring the throughput on your line and be
shocked.....

Ok if you really know what you are doing, don't mind spending
big dough on good router and switches....I suggest also invest
in router on ISP site since otherwise you don't have control over
the routing policies....then offcourse what happens if your line is
down?? redundancy...0 with 1 line.

And have the manpower to fix stuff in case it's down.....this is
usually when you are asleep or not anywhere near the place.
Then it's a good option.

Really the advantages of a good ISP are too many to mention.
Here a few. 24/7 support, redundancy, interconnection between
multiple big ISP's good hardware, cheap pricing, etc, etc.

Put your servers with a Good ISP, have production servers in
your office. Connect your production servers through VPN to your
servers at your ISP. That's a good setup. You will have a good
test environment and always a good backup.

Most people try to save too much on their hosting. Never forget
if your sites are not online or not working properly you won't
make money. I have seen sites that had shit hosting doing half a
Mbit....they move to good hosting....bandwidth goes to 2Mbit
sales go up...and then they realise damn saving 100 dollars per
month has costed me 1000's of dollars per month....

You should consider this.....

No I don't run an ISP (anymore) just my 2 cents...

that's why you don't run things that are critical from a home connection. You put them on a dedicated server at a NOC. There's no guarantee that their shit isn't gonna go down too... nothing is indestructable. But my connection here has been up and running strong for nearly 3 years. I've had 2 days in that time period where a switch went down and it took more than a few hours to fix..... but other than that..... it's been steady as she goes.

Now... you're gonna keep telling me that that's not reliable? I know plenty of hosting companies that could not say the same thing.

That's why I said MOST of us and mentioned that some people
that know their shit run it or parts from their own location.

My suggestion was for the general mass of people amongst us.
Not for everybody. I can also sum up a lot of things why it could
be better in some cases to host at your own office.

However people who DO host at home already know those advantages and know enough that they don't need advice.

My T1 is rock solid and is more than adequate for what I need it for. Everything else is on a dedicated box at a NOC in San Diego. So when you deem a connection as "gay", first take into account how it's being used.
