E-mail marketing = go or no?

Very easy question, I added a poll just in case you don't like to type.
What is your vision on e-mail marketing, is it the best tool out there to promote a site such as many advertising/ marketing people claim it to be, or is it a waste of time and money with very little return in investment?
If you did a mail campaign in the past feel free to tell how you did, what clickratio you got etc....

Numbers dont lie... Do some math and see how many sales you make on 10 000 000 emails sent out if 0,001% convert.

we do not use email campaigns instead we advertise on webmaster boards and major events along with other campaigns plus word of mouth. Unless someone signs up for your site and requests updates, your spamming. Simple as that.

If your still planning on doing it, then I suggest that whatever list your using that you make sure that you put a note at the bottom that should webmasters wish to be removed to reply (or use another email address) that they do so - and when you receive that email.. get them off the friggin list. The damage caused by having a reputation of 'spamming' can do your business more harm than whatever good you think can be accomplished by an email campaign.

I can say mailing is not what you think. If you're thinking you can jump in and start making big $ overnight you are very wrong. It is a constantly evolving biz now that has a serious barrier for any real entry. If you're serious you can work your way into it and make alot of money, but getting to that stage takes time, money, contacts and brains. It certainly isn't about sticking up a piece of software with a bunch of emails and waiting for the $ to roll in. Not unless you're happy with 1 signup a day that is

You are in a different type of biz, you need to sell your product to webmasters to make money, e-mail lists, campaigns won't do you a lot of good. My product is a free site, I want people to visit it, I want bookmarkers so my approach is different. I am targetting a different audience so this is calling for a different way to handle things.

I did some study on e-mail marketing, what's legal what's not and what you should mention in the mails you are sending so that's not a problem. There are different companies that do the mailings for you out there and charge you on per click basis. I'm only wondering how results are from such campaigns, my main goal is traffic, getting the word out so this option will be the best choice for me I think. I tried choker but that was a bummer, in my opinion they are only good to send traffic to your galleries but not to a site.

So many webdesigers, affiliate progs on these boards but mail marketeers don't seem to be around.

I'm sure you saw something like this in the past on tv:

"In Spain 15 people were arrested for a big e-mail scam, they scammed money for the amount of 2.5 million $ by sending spam mails to people. The message they sent mentioned that you won some crap non existing lottery bla bla bla...."

So even when those idiots with their idiotic mails that perhaps 1 sucker in 15000000 believes can pull in such a large amount of cash by using a rip off mail campaign, I think that with a decent legal campaign where you offer a free service you should be able to book good results.

It depends on what you're promoting, but I've always done fairly well.
