Yes, Britain does have an army. No idea why you would say they don't. One of the best trained in the world to boot.

No fair - you had a hometown advantage. Plus, around 400,000 of you spent lots of time on various French beaches waiting for evacuation boats to save your ass from the Krauts in 1940. Many of the British D-Day troops recognized beach landmarks from their earlier retreat.

I guess maybe because we joined the war at the begining, not after it had been already won. Then for John Wayne films and Hollywood to re write history for the next 40 years later.

My dad was a career soldier - joined up at 17 still works for them in a civilian capacity (he's in his 50's now). Royal Engineers if you wanna know the regiment.

WWII was won in 1941? Who's rewriting history? LOL. You "joined" the war earlier b/c it was in your backyard. Plus, if it weren't for the pre-41 massive merchant fleet missions - your island would have been starved into submission.

Never ceases to amaze me how we (the British and the Americans) always end up trying to score points over who won WWII when what we should be doing is showing a bit of respect to every single Allied soldier who fought in that conflict and not trying to undervalue the role anyone of the allied nations played.

The backyard theory doesn't hold water, Canada was in from the beginning. Over half of the Convoys that supplied the Allies across the Atlanic were escorted by Canadian ships.
And I agree with Svenski, just quit the pissing and "Remember Them". All of them.

Totally agree!

WW2 was fought by troops, seamen and airmen on various fronts (not just in Europe), by espionage teams and "freedom fighters" in the background. Many of em, across the board, suffered badly and others paid with their lives.

For some cheap GFY shit to talk crap about stuff they were never involved in and still remain clueless - is a joke.

Both my father and father-in-law were involved, one in a regiment he later became the RSM and the other did "backroom stuff" and went thru internment and torture for a time.

Years back, I was invited as a regimental guest and it was hard to not see the degree of "honor" in these guys from the commanding officers downwards - they "oozed" good conduct/standards and had respect for each other and those around them. I seriously doubt these standards apply any longer.

In the same vien, others from Norway, Denmark, Austria, Italy, France, Poland and loadsa places fought in this war on various levels. One old lady (no longer alive) had her three daughters in very close proximity to Adolf. One ended up coming home badly beaten up and "transacted over" to her homeland at some point, - one was never heard of again and the other did survive. It was "unsaid", or rather "smiled at" - but obvious they were collecting intelligence.

It's extra pathetic when you see people bickering about shit like that when none of them actually fought in that war, and none of them were even alive at the time.

If YOU didn't fight in that war, then YOU didn't earn the right to tell someone that YOU saved their ass.

It's so amazingly pathetic to see people brag and take credit for something they had nothing to do with.

It is pretty easy. I know lots of guys who left the Canadian Navy for the Aussie Navy. If they already had technical training the RAN would pay all expenses for them to move. I know a few guys who did. Benefit of veing Commonweath.
If you are thinking of going Brit just be forewarned you can't leave the Military down the road as easily. Make sure your sure, Good Luck!

When was this? The '60s?

I've dealt with a lot of immigration issues with a lot of countries, and one of the biggest myths I've encountered is that people from Commonwealth countries think that they will have an easy time getting immigration approval in another Commonwealth country simply because they're from another Commonwealth country. Immigration between Commonwealth countries being easy is a big myth.

Im not talking about the 60's talking about this century. And we're talking service in the military, not flat out immigration at first. And it does happen often.

Coincidentally it's relatively easy to join the US military as well as a Canadian.

I figured he was wanting to do it as some form of immigration. Seems odd to me to want to serve in some other country's army, but not be allowed to immigrate there.

Mostly because of the Security Clearance. But to just join as a grunt or whatever you don't even have to live in America. The Navy recruits tons of Philipino's who hardly ever see American soil. Though not required, military service does fast track a green card.

That's exactly correct. They had no problem wanting me to sign on to the regular forces.

And for the record as a Canuck getting into the British Regulars is pretty easy. The rules don't apply as strictly when you want to serve king and country. Heck they even give you a pension after 2 years. Commonwealth has its advantages. While nowhere near the same as they were 50-100 years ago there are still perks to the whole deal.

I'm more investigating at this point.

That is true. And once you are a serving member of another commonwealth armed forces, obviously immigration is easier. If you want to serve. Outstanding good on you, but it's definitlely not worth it if it's purely immigration driven. (And my personal advice, Go Air Force!) I spent 10 years in the Navy and if I had to do it again I'd go Blue in a heartbeat.

My whole family was in the army. Most of my kin are named after family members that fought and died in WW1 and WW2.

I find it to be very distasteful to disrespect all those young boys and girls who fought and suffered through some VERY tough times. Wether you're american, british, canadian, german or any nationality that fought in a war, you shouldn't start bashing a nation like that. You weren't there, you don't know what happened.

Never forget that the first casualty of war is ALWAYS the Truth.

My good buddy from army cadets went on to join the Canadian military and then spent some time working for the Brit Army. (He's 29 and has been doing this for the past 10 years). He has lots of stories about the things he's done -- like killing entire families under cover of darkness because they are on the wrong side of the political spectrum.)

So Brad, if you want to join up with the British military so you can be told to go kill people you don't even know, as a Canadian you should be able to do that. Best of luck!

I spent 10 years in the Navy and if I had to do it again I'd go Blue in a heartbeat.
The only reason I would go RAF is if I could be a pilot. I realize there are other jobs like para gunner and such, however that just doesn't strike me as being as good of a job.
And no it is not immigration driven it all. It comes down to: Would I want to serve as a CDN officer or a British Officer. The decision is pretty simple when you look at funding and activity of forces. The Canadian army is shamefull, which is really too bad for a once strong fighting force.

Cool, good luck with whatever decision you make. As for airforce there are lots of jobs not necesarily flying. Technical shit and such, I would just go Blue cause it's a better "Union" so to speak. The Canadian military is still extrmemely proud and effective and well trained, just grossly undermanned and underfunded. Due to politicians, and public apathy. I shudder to think what will happen once we do get hit. It's a When and not an if, IMO.
Anyhoo, I'd be proud to serve in the British Forces as much as any other. Cheer Mate.
