Thoughts on charity, tact, and assholes

If I fall down and publicly ask for help, you have a few choices:

1) extend your hand.
2) Ignore me.
3) Pause before extending your hand and see if I really need help. Make sure I am not trying to trick you. Subtly ask around about my motives and intentions.
4) Take the event as an opportunity to *mindfully* discuss the importance of watching where you step.
5) Publicly speculate about my clumsiness and stupidity for falling.

For the record, while am still on the ground and bleeding, options 1-3 are the only safe responses. Option 4 is okay, as long as you tread carefully and be very careful about your tone.

Option 5 makes you an asshole. Period.

it's easy to be nice to nice people, anyone can do that.

It's not easy to be nice to people who arn't nice.

this is the only option that I would even consider....if someone I am associated with is in trouble, i will always help...doesn't matter if it is a friend or enemy....because regardless of their status in my mind now, they were close to me at one time

My natural instinct is 'extend my hand' and it's been this way all my life. Whether it is genuine danger or a setup for whatever reason - it doesn't really matter once I've extended my hand and I've done what my heart and soul thinks is the right thing to do.

When you have kids, you just hope that if ever your child is in any danger or life-threatening situation, and you're not around to help them - that there is one good soul that would at least make a call for help.

We're talking about a grown man falling down in this thread, not a fucking child.

if he was doing something like running around like a retarded kid at recess and tripped over something and fell on his face, I wouldnt offer him a helping hand.

now if we were walking along and he tripped unexpectedly on a crack in the sidewalk, i certainly would help him up.

I guess you cannot comprehend something like this

As the saying goes.....treat others the same way you would like to be treated! If you enjoy being an asshole and kicking those when they are down then one day you to may be down and get the shit kicked out of ya. But be nice to those around you and hopefully they will be nice in return. Unfortunately many people abuse the generosity and kindness of others but there are still those out there that are genuine.
I will always lend a hand!

If I made it common practice to help everyone that "fell down" then in less than a month I wouldn't be able to pick myself up.

Although we're being general here I think everyone knows the situation you're basing this thread on...it doesn't take a rocket scientist. And in that situation I chose not to help because of several factors that I have openly aired. If that makes me less of a person or a mean person then that's your opinion. People have accused others of being inhumane, assholes, sick fucks, etc just because they aired their opinions about this matter.

If you sent money it doesn't make you a kind person. It doesn't make you a nice person. It doesn't make you a better person. It makes you a weak minded and easliy influenced person if you didn't know her personally.

I can pull up newspaper articles every single day of good people being hurt. Hell, some good friends of mine were hurt but you didn't see me coming to GFY asking for donations to help them. That's just asinine!

I try not to make it a habit to pay for other people's fuck ups. Call me an asshole or insensitive but that's how I feel. If someone that was a regular here was injured or needed money then I would send it in a heartbeat with no questions asked (like I have many times in the past).

By the way, I donate a shit load of money to the ASPCA and to several local charities on a yearly basis. I just donated $2K to help promote an event for the hearing impared. The difference is that they didn't come to a public forum and ask for it. For the families of Katrina, I donated money to help rescue the stranded animals and loaded up one of my box trucks full of food and water and drove it up there myself.

Once again, there is a huge difference between the two and I'm sorry that people here couldn't see it.

To answer the original question of the thread. Hal, if you fell down I would do everything in my power to help you up. I respect you and like you and somewhat know you, not personally but from this board. If you ever fell down then I would help pick you up in a heartbeat.

Well said.

I know you would, Mr. Richards! I've always been a fan of yours.
