DENVER -- Residents of the Mile High City have voted to legalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana for adults. Authorities, though, said state possession laws will be applied instead.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday, 54 percent, or 56,001 voters, cast ballots for the ordinance, while 46 percent, or 48,632 voters, voted against it.

Under the measure, residents over 21 years old could possess up to an ounce of marijuana.

"We educated voters about the facts that marijuana is less harmful to the user and society than alcohol," said Mason Tvert, campaign organizer for SAFER, or Safer Alternatives For Enjoyable Recreation. "To prohibit adults from making the rational, safer choice to use marijuana is bad public policy."

Bruce Mirken of the Washington, D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project said he hoped the approval will launch a national trend toward legalizing a drug whose enforcement he said causes more problems than it cures.

Seattle, Oakland, Calif., and a few college towns already have laws making possession the lowest law enforcement priority.

The Denver proposal seemed to draw at least as much attention for supporters' campaign tactics as it did for the question of legalizing the drug.
Tvert argued that legalizing marijuana would reduce consumption of alcohol, which he said leads to higher rates of car accidents, domestic and street violence and crime.

The group criticized Mayor John Hickenlooper for opposing the proposal, noting his ownership of a popular brewpub. It also said recent violent crimes - including the shootings of four people last weekend - as a reason to legalize marijuana to steer people away from alcohol use.

Those tactics angered local officials and some voters. Opponents also said it made no sense to prevent prosecution by Denver authorities while marijuana charges are most often filed under state and federal law.

The measure would not affect the medical marijuana law voters approved in 2000. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that medical marijuana laws in Colorado and nine other states would not protect licensed users from federal prosecution.

Also Tuesday, voters in the ski resort town of Telluride rejected a proposal to make possession of an ounce or less of marijuana by people 18 or older the town's lowest law enforcement priority. The measure was rejected on a vote of 308-332.

State laws and ultimately Federal drug laws will trump any city ordinance.

Its a step in the right direction. The good (and bad) thing about democracy is that politicians are quick to change their views to those represented by the majority.

I think that the police will have the same passive approach they do in Cali. As long as you're not caught growing 500 plants or with 50lbs then I really don't think the casual user has anything to worry about.

There aren't going to be any "coffee shops" popping up but the enforcement will drop to minimal.

A major U.S. city with lenient pot laws??? Their population of webmasters will grow exponentially! Every geek and stoner will descend on that city like the troops at Normandie.

That's what I get for being mr. clean&sober all these years. Next thing you know they'll allow having sex in public.

People smoke pot whether it's legal or not. People don't smoke pot whether it's legal or not. Nothing will change.

I'd rather see people high on pot then drunk, they are A) Less annoying B) Much less violent C) Have better breath

The only reason pot isn't legal is because it is so fucking easy to grow, everyone would grow their own, and the gov't would lose out on the revenue and taxation of it, as it stands now they make a fortune on the fines.

I'm going to have to disagree with that comment. When I was in school I had to sit through some poor post-grad's long winded dissertation and the moron did it on Legalizing Marijuana and how it would effect our Economy. Believe it or not, any influx of cash on any economy is detrimental. He explained that the immediate surplus of cash would actually cripple our economy rather than help it. It's not because they can't tax it; that's an urban legend. It's because that if they legalized it the massive influx of money would actually collapse our economy. Pretty phenominal, heh?

It sounds absurd but it actually made sense when he described it using charts and graphs and numbers, oh my.

My brain hurts now just thinking about that.

How would growing your own pot create an influx of cash? If pot was legal, most people wouldn't buy it, and if they did it would be like cigarettes. Most people would grow their own, smoke their own. The reason why you Pay for pot is because you are paying for the risk taken in getting you the pot. Take away the risk and you take away the payment...

Marijuana is a weed and is probably one of the easiest plants to grow. The problem isn't growing it, the problem is keeping people from finding out that you are growing it.

We didn't "legalize it" we "decriminalized" it. There's a big diff. And yes, even though I do not partake in the "weed" I voted yes. Thank you Bling Daddy!

You're missing the point. Not everyone would grow their own pot...hell, tobacco is pretty fucking easy to grow in the Eastern states (North Caroline, Virginia, etc) but you don't see people growing their own tobacco and rolling their own cigs. In order to grow pot it would require a license that would cost thousands and you would have to pay taxes on. If they outright made it legal then Phillip-Morris and every other cig company would grow the fuck out of it and sell it like they do packs of Malboros. That would be taxed.

I could grow tobacco on my property right now but it's a lot more convenient just to run to the store and buy a pack of smokes.

The main reason people grow pot now is because it is illegal and they get prime money for selling it. Once pot is legalize the regular grower couldn't keep up with industrial America and would go out of business like any other mom-and-pop store.

There is absolulely nothing similar between growing tobacco and marijuana. Pot you grow, harvest let dry and smoke... Tobacco is cured & stored for 1 - 3 years before it is made into cigarettes or other tobacco products.

How many people grow their own corn, wheat, etc? ... very few.

Most people will continue to buy it ... the big change would be where ... instead of buying from the "street dealer", "friend", "mail order", etc they would instead be able to go to a shop, much like they have in Amsterdam, and conveniently purchase it - likely much it would be sold prepackaged under various brand names.

You greatly overestimate the effort people will put into things - most folks want convenience; many people signup for adult memberships for quick, easy access to quality content instead of spending much time sifting through TGPs, p2p, newsgroups, etc.

Cannabis in general is easy to grow, but growing cannabis with any decent yield, as in giving one a high, takes months, and requires some effort to ensure health and yield; sexing and killing/keeping male plants away.

In both Amsterdam and Vancouver, cannabis is to some extent tolerated and yet many sellers (shops, etc) still do a brisk business selling cannabis.

Ron

p.s. I know a lot about this subject being that I operate CANNABIS.COM - shortcut url http://cann.com

10 ounces ... heck, that still wouldn't be much ... though perhaps 10 pounds might be

This thread makes for an excellent segway into the topic of the sale of CANNABIS.COM domain package...

I'm offering the CANNABIS.COM domain name package for sale for only several hundred thousand pounds ... no not those kind, the British money kind ...

Seriously, the highest bonafide offer received to date, recently, for the CANNABIS.COM domain package is $500K USD ... grosses $8K per month, nets about $5K per month with much growth potential.

If anyone can beat that, pm me (domagon) at DNForum and/or email me your offer to [email protected] and/or [email protected]

Ron

Bullshit. 90% of marijuana offenses are done through the local level. I've never heard of anyone being busted by the state for weed, and if you think the feds are going to start prosecuting everyone for an ounce of weed you're nuts.

Pot laws are a tough one for me while I dont belive in conviction for small amounts of pot I have seen many people lives fuck uped because of it.
Heavy stoners are no better than drunks and people with any sort of mental problem only get allot worse for smoking pot. Its the old catch 22 make it legal and will have more problem smokers?
Just like you cant get get out of bed and have a beer you cant pack the bong as well.
At the right time and place Ive been known to smoke the odd joint as well but I pick my time and place just like haveing a large drink. When I was younger I belived in makeing pot legal allot more than I do now , but busting guys for a few joints and having a criminal record is just wrong.
Anything in excess is wrong the odd smoke at a few times a year wont hurt to much. but even 3 or 4 times a week can change shit. I once had a dealer I did allot of work for and he pay me in pot so I did smoke more than I should have. I realised it was fucking with me to much so I started to make him pay me in cash instead after a while. You watch this board and see how long the heavy stoners last. They cant do there work correctly and disapear.
Any thing in moderation is ok any shit in excess causes problems.

I was going to make a joke about Bob Denver or John Denver, until I remembered they're both dead.

Pot has already been decriminalized in a number of states.

For the past 15+ years or so in NY. Less than an ounce is a simple ticket and small fine.

This is nothing new.

There is elation, energy, a kind of mania, but it tends to be destructive in the end. And it often ends up metabolizing into fat deposits. Well, this fat is the asset inflation of both the stock market and real estate. Instead of nurturing a small lean business that will generate jobs and real wealth and will create new assets, money is diverted into existing assets, inflating their price far above their fundamental value. Needless to say, this is completely unproductive and, in the end, harmful for the economy."

VINCENT:
Yeah, it breaks down like this:
it's legal to buy it, it's legal to
own it and, if you're the
proprietor of a hash bar, it's
legal to sell it. It's legal to
carry it, which doesn't really
matter 'cause -- get a load of this
-- if the cops stop you, it's
illegal for this to search you.

Yeh, so much for it being a democracy or a government allowing the people to vote on issues that matter to them.

We have elected theocrats these days, soon we will be wearing head gear like our taliban brothers in afganistan.

Pot seems to be far more benign than alcohol in terms of social issues that it creates.

The laws may not last, it's almost inevitable that people will abuse the priveleges and opportunity.
